Andrew Jackson's Migration: The Trail Of Tears

There were Five Civilized Tribes that lived in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. White people were not happy with the land they were on and Jackson forced them to move to the Great Plains because he believed there would be no conflict with them there. In 1830 Jackson pushed for the Indian Removal Act which allowed Native Americans to move west. In 1790 the federal government recognized the Cherokee as a separate nation which led to Georgia taking their land in 1830. The Cherokee went to the United States Supreme Court and they said they had the right to be on that land but President Jackson did not agree which caused the Trail of Tears.

As a part of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, Native American people were forcefully assembled and made to endure one of the longest walks from Georgia to Oklahoma on what has become known as the Trail of Tears. President Andrew Jackson’s motives for movement of the Native people to a new territory was to eliminate the Native race by stripping the victims of their vital resources needed for basic survival. The cherokee (chair-uh-kee) tribe was a tribe located in the southeastern part of the United States in states like Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Descendants now mostly live in Oklahoma. Many of the descendants now live in Oklahoma because of the Trail of tears which was the removal of Native americans by forcing them to Indian reservation, and if the tribes didn’t go by will the american army would force them.

The United States Supreme Court said the land belonged to the Indians. Andrew Jackson was the only president in the history of the United States to openly defy a Supreme Court order. Jackson is said to have exclaimed “John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it.” (Foner, 303) Andrew Jackson disregarded the Supreme Court ruling and forced the Native Americans to move westward. The Trail of Tears is one of Jackson’s most infamous legacies (Warshauer, Matthew).

The Trail of Tears is undoubtedly one of the most inhumane events in U.S history. It all started with the Indian removal act enforced by President Andrew Jackson. The U.S military were ordered to forcefully evict many innocent people and have them walk extremely long distances during excruciating weather. Many Indians dropped dead in the midst of the trail causing grief for the Indians hence, its name Trail of Tears. The Trail of Tears was an abomination for the U.S due to the fact that this act was unconstitutional,caused mass genocide, and the land had originally belonged to the natives.

Trail of Tears, the journey of 900 Miles that took approximately nine months to complete. The Cherokee Indians and over 40 other groups or tribes traveled over land and water and were held in concentration camps along the way. The Cherokee traveled with military escorts. They left behind highly coveted land. The Environments of the Indians were not good for walking on the trail, the journey is long and and dangerous the weather was bad and many died.

The Trail of Tears was a horrible and genocidal act towards the “civilized tribes'' of the southern regions. The Trail of Tears was an act for western expansion put into effect by Andrew Jackson in his “Indian Removal Act''. Jackson wanted to continue western expansion by any means necessary and thus the trail of tears was set into motion in the early 1830s. The Trail of Tears was overall a dreadful act of forced displacement, ethnic cleansing, and unwarranted death towards the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole tribes. Americans were focused on western expansion in the name of manifest destiny, they thought that god wanted them to have the land.

The president was exhibiting selfishness and naïveté by confiscating the lands of the natives, to which they rightfully owned. Jackson had forced the “five civilized tribes,” which were natives who had adopted their neighbor’s ideas. These tribes were forced to make a long and perilous journey to the west of the Mississippi River.

The removal included members of the Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations, who chose not to absorb American society, from their ancestral homelands in the southeastern U.S. to an area west of the Mississippi River that had been designated as Indian Territory. Native Americans who chose to stay and absorb the American society were allowed to become citizens in their states and of the U.S. The phrase "Trail of Tears" originated from a description of the removal of the Choctaw Nation in 1831. Evidence from Research: Many Native Americans suffered from exposure, disease, and starvation while going on the route to their destinations, many died, around 2,000-6,000 of the 16,543 relocated Cherokee.

One of the most notable moments during his time of leadership was the “Trail of Tears”, or forced removal and relocation of all Cherokee tribes on American soil. The Indian Removal Act, passed in 1830, ultimately caused the death of 4,000+ Cherokee people (Doc 4, par. 3).

The trail of Tears was an unethical decision implemented by the government of the United State. The President Jackson used force to push the native American out of their lands. Andrew Jackson disobeyed a direct order from the Supreme Court, which it means he was above the law. I really wonder how Americans tolerated him, at that time, he was cruel to the Indian common man. Because of him, the Native Americans have the worst end of the Trail of Tears. They are the ones who are forced out of their traditional homes and sent away on a journey of pain and death. Those who had fallen ill, most of the time died, and those who had the will to move on were able to make it to the end and start new lives.

Which allowed Jackson to forcibly remove the Indians from their native lands in the southeastern states, such as Florida and Mississippi, and send them to specific “Indian reservations” across the Mississippi river, so the whites could take over their land. From 1830-1839 the five civilized tribes (The Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, and Chickasaw) were forced, sometimes by gun point, to march about 1,000 miles to what is present day Oklahoma.
