Article Report “Single Parenthood and Children’s Reading Performance in Asia” is an article written by Hyunjoon Park. In this article, Park examines the gap in reading performances between 15-year-old students that live in single-parent families and, and compares them to other 15-year-old students in intact families. His study compares 5 Asian countries, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and Thailand, to the United States. Park wanted to know why the association between single parenthood and children’s education vary across countries. To answer this question, Park collected and analyzed data from the Program for International Student Assessment. The dependent variable for this analysis was the students’ performance on reading literacy, and …show more content…
The final results indicated “…that in Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea, student’s socioeconomic background accounts for substantial part of the negative effect of single parenthood” (Park 873) However, if the socioeconomic backgrounds were held constant, then the students in single-parent families outperform the intact families. As for the size of the family, turns out that the United States had more students in single-parent families with more siblings than in those who were in intact families. The Asian families showed that the size does not differ between the two types of families, which did not significantly affect the education …show more content…
Final results showed that “ Asian countries show a relatively narrower educational gap between students in single-parent and intact families, in contrast to the significant disadvantage of growing up with a single parent in the United States” (Park 874). This study covered the education and family chapters in our book. I thought Park covered this study very well. The way that he broke down each section was very helpful. I also think that by surveying a variety of schools helped keep the data fair. One weakness that was in the data came from the limitation from the collected data on single parenthood. The information was not specific if the single parenthood resulted from widowhood, divorce, or an unmarried birth. These causes could have affected the students from single-parent families differently, which could cause the data to be altered. Overall this is a very nice study, and because of it I now know that family structures affect reading performances the United States more than in Asian

The intention of upbringing is indisputable – you want your child to have a great life and a great future, but perchance certain ways of educating children can cause more damage than good. The article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” was written in 2011 by Amy Chua, who is a professor at Yale Law School in the United States of America. The article follows significant themes such as the upbringing of children and perfectionism. In the article, the author, Amy Chua, explains the differences between the upbringing of children by respectively Chinese parents and Western parents.

Hmong women who are married have many roles in the family, but those with children have more expectations placed upon them. They are also less expected to attend college. Lee (1997) found in her study that the participants who held off college eventually returned to school because they believed it would lead to economic security. Those with supportive families had an easier time in college because they had the childcare that they needed. Those whose families were farther away or were less supportive had difficult times finding affordable daycare (Lee, 1997).
Education has a strong structure foundation. Within one’s life, I believe that the connection between parent and teacher is a bond that can influence and connect a child together through the mesosystem. As a parent, I know that my children will be affected by general beliefs, behavior patterns, and value system in our society so that is why I plan to stress to them the importance of education. Education is something that no one should feel that they can’t accomplish because even though everything comes with a price the government has made ways in which you can acquire the needed funds to further your education. The academic performance and social relationship and interaction with peers and teachers are influenced by what happens in a child’s family
According to the data developed from the ECLS, the more important factor in determining a child’s success on a standardized test is what a parent is. In my opinion, this does not mean that all parents who try to make education first fail. It means that parents who are more educated or have more resources are able to give their children. I believe this is a strange conclusion because what a parent is reflects what a parent does usually. This chapter discusses how a child’s environment is not a direct correlation to their success.
It is important to know how many books a child reads in a year, as it could increase a student’s literacy level and help grow their knowledge and views as well. Some next step suggestions for this research, would be to have each study done in different cultural areas. For this experiment all three studies were done in European countries. If one study was done in North or South American countries, Asian countries and European countries, then a bigger conclusion could have been drawn from comparing the results from the
In this study the did surveys that had kids answer curtain questions to find the answer they needed. They found that the phrase “two parents are better than one” is not true. It does not really matter the structure of the family as much as it matters the relationship of the family. I thought that if you had one parent it would not be as good as if you had two parents. This study proved that
The disciplinarian in the family is the father, according researchers at Ohio State University thus, children living with single mothers may likely to have behavioral problems, but the result of their study contradicted their assumption. Children who were less well-behaved in the classroom were raised by single fathers. Teachers reported that children raised by solo fathers put less effort in class and are less successful in getting along with others (Grabmeier, 2015). Solo Parenting Children are expectant and dependent on their parents for their needs, affection, and love. One or more children dependent on one parent describe solo parenthood (Kowalczyk).

The result will engage schools, society and even government to take more attention to those students who are from single parent families.
