In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, the author is commenting on war in a way in which people will change and be violent to protect themselves and others, even though they understand the pain of being hunted. Rainsford, a boy who washed up on the shore of the forbidden island, was hunted by General Zaroff, a general who got disinterested in hunting animals, so he created a new game in which hunted people instead. Unfortunately, Rainsford’s arrival provided General Zaroff with new prey. Rainsford understood what it was like to be hunted by General Zaroff, but in the end, he still hunted and killed Zaroff for his own, and others to later be trapped on the island’s survival. After he learned what General Zaroff was hunting and retired for the night, “He was tired in every fiber of his being, but nevertheless Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep. He lay, eyes wide open” (104). This action shows how he was very afraid of the events that lay ahead of him. The way Rainsford reacted showed he was very afraid of being hunted. Throughout the story Rainsford demonstrates being determined quite a bit.

Rainsford knew that he was unable to retreat and forced to face danger. Rainsford realized that animals felt and how they had to face the danger just like how he did.

Now in “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford has to find a way to outsmart the hunter “ The softness of the earth had given him an idea. He stepped back from the quicksand a dozen feet or so and, like some huge prehistoric beaver, he began to dig”(Connell 21). This is how Rainsford thought he could outsmart the hunter. Rainsford wanted to trick the hunter because if not the hunter would kill Rainsford because the hunter does not like to hunt normal things but humans. If Rainsford survives three days he could leave which is why he has to outsmart the hunter.

Action is a trait of commercial fiction but because it is not the central aspect of “The Most Dangerous Game”. Instead, the central aspect is the shock that the author uses to drive the story forward. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.

All Quiet on the Western Front is widely considered to be the greatest war novel of all time for a variety of reasons, but perhaps one of the greatest is that raw and honest depiction of the psychological defense mechanisms soldiers used to deal with wartime trauma. From shameless humor and the blockage of emotions to playing games and scavenging for food, Paul and his company were often close to blocking out the savagery of war around them. Through a variety of different activities, soldiers in All Quiet on the Western Front could come close to completely blocking out the war around them, but were unable to truly escape the horrid world they lived in. One of the most prominent psychological defense mechanisms used in the book can be found in Paul’s relations to his fellow soldiers. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.

She was stuck in the household of her evil stepmother, and was not allowed to leave her home. Cinderella wanted to attend a ball; however, her stepmother would not let her go.

The Most Dangerous Game Conflicts All stories have to have a conflict, the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has three important conflicts. Man against man, man against nature, man against himself are the three main conflicts that take place. For man against man Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting each other in the hunting ‘game’. For man against nature Rainsford is fighting the sea once he hears the gunshots and is trying to get out of the water.

It is now hard for him to trust anyone after being forced to be hunted. “The pit grew deeper; when it was above his shoulders, he climbed out and from some hard saplings cut stakes and sharpened them to a fine point. These stakes he planted in the bottom of the pit with the points sticking up” (Connell 34) because of this flashback Rainsford starts to get scared about himself hurting another human being. He won’t hunt again because he remembers his times of desperation and how he felt while trying to kill a living person. Another factor of Rainsford’s nervousness is when he told that the man being hunted the day before lost his head.

Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change. The short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, consists of General Zaroff being the hunter and Rainsford being the hunted. During the story, their positions change to the complete opposite.
