While reading Animal Farm by George Orwell, I began to develop hatred towards the characters in the novel. In chapter two, I started to kind of dislike Mollie because the only things she was worried about were sugar cubes and ribbons. She wanted to know if those items would be available after the rebellion. Furthermore, in chapter five, when Napoleon disagreed with Snowball about the windmill, he went and literally peed on all of his plans. Even though the story is fiction, Napoleon’s actions offended me.

Propaganda is the spreading of ideas, rumors and other information to injure or help a person or an institution. One can see this concept in the book Animal Farm, a tale written in 1945 by author George Orwell. Orwell illustrates the use of propaganda in the Russian Revolution by utilizing animals as the main characters. In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the animals use elements of propaganda like scare tactics, scapegoating and disinformation to influence the other animals on the farm.

Snowball was run out of the farm and made seem a horrible and untrustworthy leader to make Napoleon seem better and more “on top”. Juliette Blalock Singh 4/5 Animal Farm In the satiric novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the character Napoleon represents a dictator in society, who turns a self-governed and unbiased farm into his own. Napoleon initially unifies with the rest of the animal’s, but soon decides to take matters into his own hands and disposes of Snowball and his proposals towards the farm. He takes advantage of the vulnerable animals so he can become in command. Napoleon is clever, brutal, and dictatorial to the animals.

They often disagreed on many issues involving the farm until Napoleon expelled Snowball from the farm. However even after the expulsion of Snowball, with the use of persuasive language the pigs still find a way to blame him for any misfortune the farm may encounter. To begin, the pigs blame Snowball for destroying the windmill in which the animals worked soo long to build. “Comrades," he said quietly, ‘do you know who is responsible for this? Do you know the enemy who has come in the night and overthrown our windmill?

Furthermore, Napoleon gives the other animals the impression he was the sole leader of the rebellion on Animal farm and makes Snowball -a leader who wanted what was best for the animals- seem like an enemy who was in cahoots with Farmer Jones since long before the animals took over the farm. Napoleon and Squealer (another “fat cat” pig.) always put the blame on Snowball whenever something went wrong in the farm to avoid having the blame fall on them. Napoleon is an exemplary example of just how selfish and hypocritical people can be in furthering their own aims because he continued to subtly but purposely change the seven rules put in place as the pillars of animalism. For example, Napoleon and the other pigs move into Farmer Jones’s house and sleep in his bed after commanding “No animal shall sleep in a bed”, so he changes the commandment to read “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”.

In both events, propaganda is widely used in various ways and was effective. Despite the differences between the propaganda used in World War II and Animal Farm, both of them aims for the same goal - to rule as a dictator. People uses fear to make people follow what they say since they don’t want to get hurt. As what has happened in Animal Farm, Napoleon declared “Snowball’s expulsion” (Orwell 54) without the Comrades’ approval since they made noises of disapproval. As a result, Napoleon uses “the dog sitting around him to let out deep, menacing growls (Orwell 54)” to scare them away.

After the windmill is destroyed, Napoleon blames Snowball by saying that he is the traitor who is trying "to set back our plans and avenge himself for his ignominious expulsion” (82). Napoleon’s strong desire to keep power drives him to blame Snowball for the destruction of the windmill to make him look good, so he would not be blamed for all the destructions and injuries that occur within the Farm. This impels the animals to assume that Snowball is the victim and consequently the animals would rely on Napoleon to keep Snowball away for their protection. Squealer swindles the animals saying that the windmill was actually Napoleon’s invention and that his opposition towards it is just a fabrication in order “to get rid of Snowball, who was a dangerous character and a bad influence” (71). Napoleon’s only strategy is to make the animals under the impression that Snowball is the source of all destructions in order to keep his power.

In Animals Farm, there is a pig who’s name Napoleon. This character did not contributed to the society with his actions. In effect, he did not respect the concept of “Animalism” which is the equality of all the animals. He did many actions that broke this conception during the entire story. At the beginning, Napoleon, take the farm with Snowball when the farmer, Mr. Jones, left.

Napoleon in the novel is not a wise character. However, he occupies the leader’s position since he is intimidating and authoritative. In contrast, Snowball who is portrayed as the intelligent character, somehow gets expelled from the farm, because he was not as manipulative as Napoleon. To begin with, Orwell uses propaganda as one way of illustrating the theme of power. Napoleon and Squealer both utilize propaganda to brainwash and motivate the animals into following their orders, such as when Snowball teaches the sheep into chanting the slogan, “Four legs good, two legs bad!”(Orwell, page 34).

Power can have the persuasive action in undoing the moral ethics of one’s character. This can be seen throughout history, such as World War II and proven by the actions of Napoleon in the allegory, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. As Lord Acton said “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In history what was viewed as a villain, is never the same as the perception. A leader does not begin wanting to do wrong, they start with the best intentions, but power is a tricky thing.

One example occurs when the author state that the most significant and the most hardest thing to work on by the animals is actually Napoleon’s own creation. “The windmill was, in fact, Napoleon’s own creation” (57). This explanation means Napoleon is the one who wants the hard work go toward the animals. This phrase is significant on the use of accusation by dictators because at first, Snowball suggests to have a windmill and Napoleon opposes but it turns out that Napoleon is the owner of windmill. Another example from the book is when Napoleon uses accusation to bring misunderstanding to animals about Snowball being Jones’s spy.

Hate is everywhere! Everywhere you turn there will always be people who hate you, your ideas, or everything. As a High School student, hate surrounds me in digital forms and physical forms. I see bullies in real life and homophobic people on my Twitter Timeline. They both share one thing in common: the first amendment.

As Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin and Snowball, Leon Trotsky, it is natural that these two pigs have different personalities. Napoleon is a more fierce-looking character than Snowball, who is known to get his own way. Snowball, in the other hand, is more vivacious and talkative than Napoleon. These two pigs have different views over the Seven Commandments and how other animals should be governed and treated. Besides their differences, we can say that both Napoleon and Snowball wanted the rebellion to happen and supported the idea of Animalism and, consequently, the expurgation of humans from the power.
