During Andrew Jackson's time as president a lot of bad events in history occurred. President Andrew Jackson has done more bad than good. For example, he started the Trail Of Tears, The Indian Removal Act, and the National Bank Changes.
During the trail of tears over 4,000 of the native americans were killed or died of hunger, cold, and disease on their way westward. The native american tribe called the Cherokees lived on valuable Georgia land. President jackson wanted the cherokees land. So the cherokees went to the U.S Supreme Court. The Supreme Court made a decision that it was their land and Georgia and president Jackson could not remove them. But Jackson decided to not listen to the Supreme Court. Unfortunately Jackson was no longer in office during the time of the trail of tears. But even with Jackson out of office his plan was still carried out and the Cherokees were removed with their homes and items burnt behind them. This

This made it so president Jackson could make more land for whites on 25 million acres of land. In the process of forcing the native americans off their land he killed 46,000 of Indians. The U.S government sent 7,000 troops to forced the Indians off their land or they were ordered to be killed.
The National Bank opened in 1816 was created to serve as a repository for federal funds. This was five years of the First National Banks charter had expired. The bank allowed less debt to be owed in the United States. But Jackson decided that the National Bank was unconstitutional and did not follow the lines of the constitution. Therefore President Jackson decided that he would cancel the National Bank. This meant that there would be more debt put onto our government and our taxes would increase. This shows that Jackson was a bad president by canceling and removing one of our most needed financial
During his second term, in the spring of 1833 after being distracted by the Nullification Crisis did he again focused on destroying the Bank. He withdraws the government’s money from the bank and was places in the state banks on September 25, 1833 by the ordered of the Treasury in the beginning of October. Biddle, in effort, countered that the Bank will ceases the offering loans nationwide which cause the nation to a near-panic since the state banks were unable to meet the demands of their loans. Despite that, Jackson becomes even more determine to stop the Bank. He pushes toward the use of “hard” currency in 1834.
The Five Civilized Tribes had tried to fight the Indian Removal Act, in what is known as Cherokee Nation v. Georgia. In 1831, the Supreme Court ruled against the Cherokee Indians and ruled that they did not meet criteria for being a foreign nation. (Corbett et al., 2014) After the supreme court case of Worcester v. Georgia, some Indians decided to move west willingly. However, some did not, and Jackson decided that forcing them to move would be his only option, and this was known as the Trail of Tears.
After winning the battle, he took on two other causes that would come to define his presidency. First came the nullification crisis, which reinforced and reflected the growing hatred between Jackson and Calhoun, and the second issue was related to finance. Jackson’s battle against Calhoun and nullification was immediately concealed by his political showdown with the Second Bank of the United States. When Andrew Jackson assumed presidency, the bank was regulating the nation’s currency supply to the satisfaction of most members of the financial community and the economy was enjoying relative stability. Jackson argued that it concentrated power in a private corporation, so he opposed the
The First American Villain Villains don’t always wear capes or tight suits, some might just look like an old rich white man in the running for president in 1824 whose name was Andrew Jackson. Jackson was very ‘American’ so he believed that the Manifest Destiny was a duty from god that the US had to own land from sea to shining sea. He also created the Nullification Crisis and Force Act which really created more hate between the North and the South. Lastly he made the Westward Expansion, or what the Cherokee call, The Trail of Tears. This happened during the presidency of none other than Andrew Jackson and it authorized him to trade/ take the land from the Cherokee and move them west past the Mississippi River.
Jackson’s policies regarding land distribution helped our country, as he thought that the land owned by Native Americans would be put to better use by American farmers, with his laws passed leading to massive amounts of fertile land being sold to the American public (Whaples 546-548). Additionally, Jackson’s policies brought with him the abundant use of gold and silver over paper currency, which greatly aided the American economy, as shown by both the increase in money after the end of the Bank of the United States and the economic boom after the Species Circular (Whaples 548-550). Furthermore, perhaps the most important policies expressed by Jackson was shown through his determination to paying off America’s national debt, as through his refusal to borrow money and his stinginess in spending more money, as well as reformations to American laws passed by Congress, Jackson successfully paid off the American national debt and brought forward a surplus of money for the first time in American history (Whaples 552-553). All in all, despite Andrew Jackson bringing much controversy into the White House during his 8 years as the president of the United States, his unique policies greatly aided America’s economy, bringing our country immense economic
Congress failed to override the veto. In 1836, the Bank was reduced and the government’s money was put into “pet banks” (state banks controlled by Democrats). The Panic of 1837 occurred when debt increased. Bank panic brought down the entire economy. Jackson issued the Specie Circular of 1836 (public land could only be bought with gold or silver).
In the article Worchester v Georgia from pbs.org is says in the 1820s and 1830s, Georgia conducted a relentless campaign to remove the Cherokees. Then Marshall Worcester took Georgia to court. Congress voted in favor of Worcester. So technically no one could move them off their land. Andrew Jackson didn't listen to congress and when the Indian removal act was passed, he moved them off their land.
Jackson ordered soldiers to remove Indians from their homes. He surrounded
Jackson dismantled the bank by the time its charter expired in 1836. Jackson's struggles with Congress were because of his personal rivalry with the leader of congress Charles Clay. Jackson's presidency marked the beginning of the "spoils system" in politics. Perhaps Jacksons mostly known for having signed the Indian Removal Act which removed a large amount of Native
Congress had made a ruling that the Indians were allowed to keep their land, but “King Jackson” said he had already made his ruling and forced them to the Trail of Tears at gunpoint (President Jackson and Indian Removal). Andrew Jackson just ignoring Congress was a problem that showed he wasn’t a common man. The
Jackson disliked the National Bank because he believed it would “make the rich richer and the potent more powerful” (Jackson). Jackson also was not fond of the idea that a quarter of bank stocks were held by foreign investors, leading them to be successful based off the bank’s success, not Americans. Last, Jackson deemed the National Bank unconstitutional. Jackson concocted a plan to destroy the bank which consisted of Jackson ordering his Secretary of Treasury to withdraw all the money from the bank and putting it into State “Pet” Banks. With the National Bank in loss of money, they recalled the loans, but the people who withdrew the loan were not in the financial place to repay the money quite yet.
The Indian Removal act was not the only way that Jackson showed his anti-democratic views, the way he used the spoils system also demonstrated the opposite of
Jackson 's push to abolish national banks other wise known as "the bank wars" was one of his more well known pushes for small government. In 1832, Jackson had vetoed a bill calling for an early renewal of the Second Bank’s charter, but renewal was still possible when the charter expired
Andrew Jackson was one of the greatest presidents who made very difficult decisions for our country. Although his choices were not always the popular decision, he made choices that were always promoting democracy. The things that make a good democracy are: giving people a say in government, having a good leader that you can trust to make wise decisions, peace and stability between each country and other states, and having equal power in the government (checks and balances). Andrew Jackson came into office with a popular vote and great support. His supporters viewed him as a man of the people.
Andrew Jackson should be remembered as a president turned tyrant due to his apathy, brutality, and his oppression. Jackson is a dictator with too much power, he does not care about what the affects of his decisions are. He kicked out the Native Americans of their land without letting them get their belongings or anything, a normal human being would at least let the get shoes before walking a great distance. The Supreme Court “consider the several Indian nations as distinct
