Happily, just like in the book with Justice for Us, started a movement called Black Lives Matter. “You can destroy wood and brick, but you can't destroy a movement.” (409, Thomas) A movement is not a building that can be taken down, but a bunch a people with the same motive to change the mind of the world. The movement started on July 13th, 2013 to fight against the murder of Trayvon Martin. Angie Thomas is a proud supporter of the movement and thinks it’s powerful that the people involved with the movement not only fight for their rights, but also fights for others like the Muslim who are now being targeted. In addition to the statement made previously, she also debated that Black Lives Matter is not an anti-cop movement. All lives matter, it’s just that right now black lives don’t matter enough. In the book, the community fights the injustice of Khalil’s death by rioting. This is not the best way to fight, but it has brought the attention of the media. Fiction is needed to develop other forms of thinking and to expand creativity. Fiction novels could help students view things from different perspectives. It may help us in a similar situation from the book for example,in the book “The hate u give “ by Angie Thomas there is a situation with police brutality and the way he handled it can inspire others to do the same or we could see where it went wrong and not do that. “The Hate U Give” is a young adult fiction novel by Angie Thomas and it is 444 pages long. I chose this climactic novel because I was looking for a book that would be relevant to today's current events and would contain two diverse perspectives and nationalities. As a member of the “read once a year club” my preconception of any novel is that it will probably be boring and watching a movie would be easier. However, from reading the first page, the authors sensational first person style of writing got me hooked and drew me in to read the whole novel within four days. Thomas writes as if she’s inside the mind of a black teenager, with her use of accurate teen lingo and slang.
Young adult literature such as The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, emphasizes teenagers using both their actions and their voices to overcome false accusations from both the media and negative perceptions. Racial inequality and police brutality are discussed greatly throughout The Hate U Give, due to the difficulties the protagonist, Starr Carter, endures when her best friend, Khalil, is killed because of the assumptions made by a police officer who categorized him as being a threat since his skin color was black. Starr receives the confidence in speaking out against what the media had broadcasted in response to Khalil’s murder by overcoming obstacles that revolve around her race and the environment she was raised in. Uniquely, the author, Laura

Alicia Garza: co-creator of the #BlackLivesMatter movement (BLM) advocates that -“Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean your life isn’t important – it means that Black lives, which are seen as without value within White supremacy, are important to your liberation. Given the disproportionate impact state violence has on Black lives, we understand that when Black people in this country get free, the benefits will be wide-reaching and transformative for society as a whole. When we are able to end the hyper-criminalisation of Black people and end the poverty, control and surveillance of Black people, every single person in this world has a better shot at getting and staying free. When Black people get free, everybody gets free.” (The Conversation,2017).
The Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 by three African American women. It’s another social justice that has made national news for their cause. Black Lives Matter is just more than a social movement. It is an out cry for help, as a nation, as a whole. Black Lives Matter is a community.
Those who are unfamiliar with Black Lives Matter, it started in 2012 by civil rights activist groups this movement followed upon the death of 17 years old Trayvon Martin an unarmed teenager that was walking home from a store and was eating a bag of skittles and shot by George Zimmerman who was at that time supervising inside of his car patrolling the
In America, the dark history of racism has placed a burned on the shoulders of our great nation. For years African Americans were enslaved, discriminated, segregated and institutionalized. Just like the dark past of America, today, all around the world people are still being persecuted and even killed for practicing their beliefs. As Americans we have came along way from the days of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Fortunate enough for us we live in a society in American where we value people’s rights and liberties.

It’s time to #TakeAKnee “We never get rid of hate by meeting hate with hate; we get rid of an enemy, by getting rid of enmity. By its very nature hate destroys and tears down.” Dr. Martin Luther King stated that the purpose of non-violent protest was not to get revenge but to change the heart of the enemy. Over the past couple of years America has begun to acknowledge police brutality as a serious problem. While state-sanctioned violence towards individuals of varying races of color is not new, the documentation through dash-cams and civilian cellphone footage has brought the brutality to light.

Inspired by the harsh realities that black women and men face, The Hate U Give is an important and timely novel that should be in the hands of teens and young adults. The storyline unapologetically tackles worldwide issues through Starr’s complex character while discussing topics like racism, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition to the bold and thought-provoking novel, the overall message of using your voice is tied together with its intimate writing style, complex characters and the novels first-person perspective which taps deeply into Starr’s shock, pain, and outrage during the shooting of her bestfriend and the aftermath. First, The Hate You Give opens various socio political subjects including the shootings of unarmed black people as well as racial bias in the justice system.

This article extend beyond the idea of Black Lives Matter and wants the reader to be informed on what it is like to be black in america. The author includes a wide amount of information to help the reader understand why this cry for help was even created and why they want to stand up and make a change in our society. The Hate You Give written by Angie Thomas was inspired by a lifetime of events, but the death of Oscar Grant was what prompted Thomas to write her novel. Thomas lived in a poor, black community in Jackson, Mississippi, and was exposed to and witnessed violence on several occasions throughout her young life. She first heard the news of the death of Grant while she was attending a predominantly white university in Jackson where many students made assumptions that Grant was automatically at fault or involved with gangs or drugs. From this event, Thomas realized that the world needed to hear what she had to say in The Hate You Give. Grant 's death by police wasn 't the first nor the last that lead to a community uprising.
