For over a century, popular articles have played a crucial role by building a communication medium between scientists and their audience who are people interested in keeping up with the upcoming science. These articles have been influenced by changes in the audience, exigence, and constraints experienced by the community. Therefore, by analyzing the changes in the popular articles through the years we can understand the growth of the discourse community.

A discourse community I took part of was my High School’s Varsity Baseball Team. Sacramento High’s Baseball team was very competitive, due to the fact that it was the least favored sport at Sac High, so we were always trying to prove ourselves better than any other sport. We had to do many things in order to try and get fans to come out and watch us play. The team consisted of six-teen players and four coaches whom worked extremely hard the past four years to finally earn the title of Champions.

Being Thrown into a Discourse Community As time passes, the human race goes through a process of automatically putting themselves into groups that we think may suit us best. Theres so called groups are portrayed as discourse communities. John Swales (1990), an analyst of written communication, claimed that “discourse communities [are] groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals”. This means that we generally go where we feel most comfortable, where others like us have the same goals and mindsets alike.

Mirabelli helped me decide what discourse community I want to study. Like Mirabelli, I am going to study a discourse community that I was a part of. After reading the extensive knowledge Mirabelli had on the community, I realized it aided his ethnographic study. USE OF DELIBERATIVE AND EPIDEICTIC RHETORIC IN CRISIS RHETORIC In his article, Bonnie J Dow does well to describe the role of deliberative and epideictic rhetoric in speeches delivered by presidents (President Reagan in his case). According to Dow, the two types of rhetoric are dependent on the situation or type of crisis which is usually determined by what or who causes it- “In this essay I attempt to describe the different functions performed by instances of crisis rhetoric that are products of different situations.” While Dow’s article holds water for most of the speeches delivered through time, for this concept, I believe that in a crisis speech, both epideictic and deliberative rhetoric can be used in such a manner that they complement each other to deliver an effective speech at a troubling time. As such, this short article Presidents George Bush’s address to a joint session of congress on the 9/11 attacks that left Americans terrified to the marrow sparking a crisis.

Language is an important part of our life. Language and communication cannot separate. People use the language as a means of communication to express their ideas and feelings. They communicate either with each other using language in every social interaction; communicate with others directly or indirectly in the spoken and written form.
