Language In Society: The Relationship Between Language And Society

Jargon is lingo shared between members of a specialized group like doctors, lawyers, or educators. It becomes doublespeak when it is used to intimidate, confuse, or impress those who are not familiar with the terms. The third type of doublespeak is gobbledygook or bureaucratese. Gobbledygook is meant to sound impressive to an audience, but is essentially just a way of piling on as many words as possible in order to confuse them. The fourth type of doublespeak is inflated language; language designed to make something seem much more important than it is, like working for a “fortune 500 company”, rather than being a sale associate for Walmart.

An individual who observes my life can effortlessly identify that my primary discourse is family. The way I act at every situation results from me observing my household members perform various activities. For instance, being in a family that relies particularly on the English language to succeed, I have easily become fluent in the linguistic. This knowledge grants me a sense of identity as the way I perceive concepts originates from my family.

Society is constantly progressing to improvement, and language can reflect that drastically (Bulletin). To conclude, slang from the 1920s has impacted language used in the current era. While times and motivations have changed, the vibrant meaning of slang words and the reasons behind their use stays the same. Social liberation, freedom, relaxation, music, and political activism will always spawn interesting words in every generation, and common place terms will gain new meaning in the world of tomorrow.

Australian convicts have significantly impacted the development of Australia in both the long and short term. Some examples include Australian cultural language, the population of aboriginals and free forced labor. These examples, represented through sources and evident has helped develop Australia to what it has become today. Historically, women could not take part in sport until 1900 and they were allowed to join sports that did not provide physical contact or strain. Nowadays, although females can take part in every sport activity, gender stereotypes in sport still exist (Friedricks & Eccles, 2005). The persistence of gender stereotypes in sport could determine a phenomenon known as stereotype threat (Steele and Aronson, 1995; Steele, 1997; Steele, Spencer & Aronson, 2002). Stereotype threat consists in a suboptimal performance within a task related to a judgment dimension along which that particular social group is “known” to be “weak”.

With all these different types of slang it can be very easy to realize what subgroup people are apart of. With all these occupational classes using different slang, it becomes very complex to find a distinction between slang and a jargon. A jargon is set of particular vocab words created by a group of people (Funk and Wagnalls, 2014). These words are only partially understood by people who are not in the subgroup. Jargons are very commonly used between doctors, teachers, bankers, and many other professions.

In William Lutz’ “Doubts About Doublespeak”, the reader is given thorough explanations and examples of how doublespeak is used in society. He breaks down doublespeak into four different categories; euphemisms, jargon, gobbledygook and inflated language. The four of these types of doublespeak share the similarity that they are words or phrases that make something negative or bad sound good. Lutz doesn’t support the use of doublespeak and thinks of it as a deceiving approach to explain realities to people who can’t differentiate truth from carefully designed phrases. Giving the reader several examples of doublespeak that even the most detached person from society would understand was very well done by William Lutz in his article “Doubts about Doublespeak”.

Language development is a critical part of a child’s overall development. Language encourages and supports a child’s ability to communicate. Through language, a child is able to understand and define his or her’s feelings and emotions. It also introduces the steps to thinking critically as well as problem-solving, building and maintaining relationships. Learning a language from a social perspective is important because it gives the child the opportunity to interact with others and the environment.

So what is language for? Language exists for communication, to control people regarding to maintain their relationships, phatic communication, thoughts, expressing emotions etc. Language is for thought and this thought is related to language directly because people can not think without language and it is really significant.
