According to him, we must first set high expectations which will drive students. It is all about having a thorough understanding, and not just enough to barely make it through. The recently freed African Americans plead to receive citizenship and equal rights, they expected to be treated as any other human being. After many years of slavery, the African Americans were finally freed from slavery by president Lincoln. Many of them were granted freedom for serving loyally in the Union army, along with certain rights, such as the right to buy land. The freed slaves were then allowed to purchase land, and received help from the government in the form of establishments such as Freedman’s Bureau and Freedmen’s Aid Society. The former slaves were now allowed to attend certain churches, schools, and were also allowed to socialize in public, although only in certain places.

African-American in the late 1800s and early in the 1900s were socially, politically and economically restricted from participating in the Southern state. Although, slaves were abolished in the 1865, even though they were free and escape the brutality in the South, their rights of human being were still taking away from them. They were given little right such as owning property in specific area. African-American could sue, be sued and testify in court only involving other African-Americans. They were given the right to get marry, however, they could not interact or have an relationship outside of race.

Celebrating Black history month is beneficial to all American citizens. African descendants played a major element of American history, they helped build America, and schools now are not fully explaining black history. This is something we have to change. However, this issue does not deter me in any way; in fact, it serves as quite the catalyst. My passion for engineering inspires me to promote this field. Through my actions in high school, I have encouraged many young women to explore careers in STEM. Through my mentoring of fourth grade girls, I excite them to pursue their interests in math and science.

Yet today Hispanic students (as well as other minorities) continue to be underrepresented in the STEM disciplines (Hoekenga, 2012). In the face of these disparities Hispanic scientists have had a major and lasting impact on the world around them. In many cases they overcame obstacles, including racism and sexism, poverty, cultural and family expectations, and lack of mathematics background, in order to work and excel in the fields that they love.

America is a nation of innovation, propelled by the development of new ideas. More and more people are investing in careers that will prepare them to contribute to this era of discovery, able to contribute in the most forward thinking fields. A significant factor in the increase in awareness of career options can be attributed to the STEM Education Coalition. This program brings attention to the vital roles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in today’s society. STEM pushes for the integration of these subjects into the daily curriculum of a student, and aims to prove the viability of these four areas for the future.

Some people may think that African Americans are usually the grassroots in a society, which means they are not rich and infamous. But this is just a stereotype of them. There are lots of African Americans that have made a lot of significant contributions for the States or even the World. In this essay, I’m going to mention about 3 of the African Americans that affect us most: they are Michael Jackson, Martin Luther King and Barack Obama.

I am an African American female whom is a descendent from the African Slave and a native American refugee. My culture runs deep in my veins and I am a product of the strength of my mother and father.
