Physical According to Mahar 2006, the habitual physical activity is vital for enhancing overall health. Lifestyle behaviors adopted in childhood tend to track into adulthood, and more active children tend to be more active as adults than their sedentary peers, thus aiding in the prevention of diseases such as hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular and other health problems. Unfortunately, physical activity among children and adolescents has declined, and increasing numbers of children are spending more time in sedentary activities. A review of the literature reveals that few studies have been conducted to evaluate the physical activity levels of elementary school children during a typical school day. Likewise, few studies have been conducted …show more content…
Because the teachings used in a holistic approach are varied, most activities approach is interactive and changeable. Students are engaged by and individual activities that help build confidence, strengthen awareness, and improve academic and social skills, and participate in whole group, small group. The holistic learning approach can developed and be organized as a way to provide the learner with experiences that allow for natural exploration and active involvement. (Hubbard, …show more content…
Many disciplines utilize different terminology to describe essentially the same process, which can add to confusion when selecting and implementing an active learning approach. These differences can be attributed to the disciplines they were promulgated from or the organization that they emanated from.
Cooperative Learning Cooperative learning is an approach that involves a small group of leaners working together as a team to solve a problem, complete a task or accomplish a learning activity that will improve their understanding of the subject matter. Every member is responsible not only by the words but also for helping teammates learn (Artzt and Newman, 1990). Accordingly, in cooperative classrooms, the students are expected to help each other, to discuss and argue with sharing their ideas.it helps to assess each other’s current knowledge and fill in gaps in each other understands. According to Johnson and Johnson (1989) and Colburn (1991) described cooperative learning as one which promotes positive interdependence, face to face promotive interaction, individual accountability, social skills, group processing, shared leadership and responsibility for each
Collaborating with Team Members to Improve Teaching and Learning Morgan Battin Western Governors University D188: The Collaborative Leader A. INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL In my fifth-grade science class, the instructional goal is to teach students to be able to identify real-world examples of symbiosis and explain how each creature in the relationship is affected. The instructional goal will support student learning and thinking through inquiry, discussion, and justification of responses as students work through the symbiosis sort. The instructional goal supports engagement because students are working with real world concepts, using technology, and have a choice of who or how they work with and where they work. 1.
Ronald Reagan Middle School The mission of Ronald Reagan Middle School is to embrace the diversity that all children possess and create an open, interactive learning program. All students are diverse in their learning and the mission of Ronald Reagan Middle School is to exercise the motto: Different, not less. Our educators inspire and support each child in their learning and ability. Our educators foster and support each and every student to be creative in learning.
Kenneth Bruffee’s “The Art of Collaborative Learning: Making the Most of Knowledgeable Peers” discusses the importance of autonomous collaborative learning in classrooms, that is, when multiple individuals work together, and constructively criticize and exchange ideas in order to produce a fruitful product. With autonomy, the instructor fades into the background to allow the students to govern their learning, which circumvents the traditional view of the instructor’s authority in the classroom. Collaborative learning is being integrated into numerous fields of study, as teaching institutions are realizing that students learn best socially. A key idea discussed in the reading is that learning occurs when knowledge is passed between individuals, by which learning and acquisition of knowledge are both social processes. The author
Opening statement Most people will think that oh middle schoolers get enough physical activity but that is not the case. Middle schoolers need recess. Middle schoolers need to get all the physical activity they need to let loose their energy. The first reason is that middle schoolers from most studies done by cnn say “that middle schoolers need an average 50-60 minutes of physical activity everyday.”
In such an environment, children would be taught collaborative thinking is more important than they might think because it helps everyone succeed together, which helps the individual as
“I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football (President Barrack Obama)”. American Football is a full contact sport played by two teams of eleven players move the ball forward by running and passing . What makes it so dangerous is the amount of hits players receive during the match and during training. Letting their kids play football is a rising concern for many parents due to the amount of injuries and even deaths that happen on the field. Chris Borland, a professional player, retired from football aged just 24 due to concerns about his head injuries.
Dr. Frank L. Smoll states, “All children and youth need vigorous physical activity as part of their daily lives, and sports provide the benefits of exercise and the potential for acquiring a sense of accomplishment.” (Smoll 1/2).
Cooperative learning model is an active process where students work in small teams/groups, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Students have opportunities to actively participate in their learning, question and challenge each other, share and discuss their ideas, and adopt their learning. Ross and Smyth (1995) describe successful cooperative learning tasks as intellectually demanding, creative, open-ended, and involve higher order thinking tasks. In this model, it is essential to create a positive climate where interpersonal skills can be promoted so that positive emotions will be fostered among learners. Cooperative learning also helps the learners to feel empowered and respected to prepare them to face real
One of the key to the successful teaching of physical education is the use of a broad range of approaches and methodologies. As it is acknowledged that schools, classes and teachers will vary, some methods will suit particular circumstances better than others, and the nature of the strands themselves necessitates the use of a variety of teaching methods. There is a need to examine the teaching methods which will best enhance the achievement of the objectives, taking factors such as the content and context of the lesson into account, as well as the needs of the learner. Teaching means sharing, guiding, changing behavior, impressing, disciplining, counseling, directing and inspiring. Good teaching is a process of producing end products of
INTRODUCTION: Attention Step: According to the article “Exercise Makes You Younger,” “Research shows that physical inactivity can cause premature death as well as chronic disease and disability" (54). Establish Need/Relevance: Nowadays technology and busy work schedules have prevented many people from including exercise into their daily activities. Many people think that it is too time consuming and rather not work
According to the article How Physical Fitness May Promote School Success, children who take part in physical activity absorb and retain new information more effectively than other students who are out of shape. This suggests, that to help students do better in school and in the classroom, they should make physical education mandatory. With physical activity present in a young students daily routine, they tend to have better grades. The article Physical Education Should be a Mandatory Class all Four Years of High School informs the reader that, According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, physical education doesn’t just lower the risk of diseases later in life but also improves focus in the classroom. In other words, P.E doesn’t just lower the risk of obesity and heart failure, it helps students in the classroom which is an even better reason to keep it around because it has multiple
604 assignments 1 1) Concepts and structure This essay will first answer what is skill theme approach? It is a model that describes both content of physical education (what to teach) and pedagogy of physical education (how to teach) (Graham, Holt/Hale, & Parker, 2010). The term inclusion is often seen as simply referring to learners with special needs, where it is interpreted as the ‘complete acceptance of a student with a disability in a regular classroom.’ However the notion can be viewed much more broadly. A common misconception about inclusion is that it is solely about including people with disability in regular sport activities without any modification. (Australian sports commission) However being inclusive is about providing a range of options to cater for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, in the most appropriate manner possible.
[47] argue that students report increased team skills as a result of cooperative learning. This is as Panitz [48] cites a number of benefits of cooperative learning for developing the interpersonal skills required for effective teamwork. As observed, there is broad empirical support for the central premise of cooperative learning, that cooperation is more effective than competition for promoting a range of positive learning outcomes. These results include enhanced academic achievement and a number of attitudinal outcomes. In addition, cooperative learning provides a natural environment in which to enhance interpersonal skills and there are rational arguments and evidence to show the effectiveness of cooperation in this
It is one of the most effective forms of learning. Working in isolation is very restrictive and gives a slow progress. Critical thinking is also encouraged when learners work in groups. Through collaborative activities such as writing, debates, group projects and more they learn to work together and to respect each other contribution. The traditional relationship between student and teacher is changed with collaborative learning.
