The epic poem Beowulf is about ponderous dragon, with razor sharp talons. The epic poem The Iliad is about a boundless warrior who rakes havoc one anyone that gets in their way. How could these two heroes be alike? There will to fight is one reason, but they couldn’t be any more diverse. The chilling dragon is more trustworthy than the boundless warrior. Both heroes are from hundreds of years ago, although Beowulf is a more modern hero. The beast is eventually more trustworthy than Achilles. In the epic poem Beowulf, he isn’t treated with any minute of respect. Beowulf is shown to be a threatening beast that will take down anyone. When Grendel wins the fight, he does something that is dishonoring to Beowulf. A quote explains what Beowulf did, “Hanging high from the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster’s arm, claw and shoulder and all” (Beowulf 356-358). This is a wonderful example of how nobody respects Beowulf so much that Grendel hung his arm up for everyone to look upon. On the other hand, many people respect the boundless warrior Achilles. One person that shows him respect is Hector. Before they start fighting, he said, “I’ll not insult your …show more content…
In the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf says, “My hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster” (Beowulf 173-174). This is a pronounced quote that shows Beowulf will to fight anyone even with his bare hands. Nevertheless, in The Iliad Hector kills one of Achilles blood brothers and he goes to fight him even though he might die. Achilles enlightens his mother on why he will fight Hector, “I must reject this life, my heart tells me, if Hector does not feel my battering pay is his own blood for the slaughtering of Patroclus” (The Iliad 27-30). This shows that Achilles will fight anyone before they fight his friends. Both these characters show modern day characteristics, but who is the modern day
Gilgamesh and Beowulf are both heroes from an Epic. An epic is a story about a hero’s adventures and the obstacles that they have to overcome. Both characters have differences, but they also have strong similarities. One major similarity that both characters possess is that they are very prideful. This characteristic is common in many heroes, but it often leads to their downfall.
Hector knows that he shall fall, but he fights Achilles any ways. That truly proves that Hector was an extremely courageous
The movie called 13th Warrior has many similarities and also differences at the same time when compared to the poem, Beowulf. There are a lot of changes in plot of the poem, and the sequence of things in the movie. The idea of the existence of an old race and the need for an epic hero is evident in the movie and in the poem as well. The differences and similarities shown in The 13th Warrior and Beowulf can be found through the plot, setting, supernatural, and the central idea.
In “The Lord of the Rings,” Gandolf has to save his people from being attacked and killed by the Balrog. Gondola has to go through many battles in different places to kill Balrog, but he comes out victorious. With the characters within these two stories they are very similar in many aspects. Both of the men are very courageous when they have to protect and defend their men. Both of the men in these stories were leaders while fighting their enemies.
Beowulf is a poem that based in the 10th and 11th century that revolved around the idea of good vs evil. The poem is named after Beowulf who is a supernatural hero that slays any evil that crosses his path but is a real sweetheart when it comes to other people or the king. Beowulf is to be considered an epic poem because the hero in the story creates acts of being courageous and even superhuman in some cases, reflecting timeless values such as courage and honor, and the poem reflects unforgettable values with honor and courage. Typically in an epic poem, one will see a character or “the hero” who has outstanding courage and commit superhuman deeds and show values to other people in that era. “Then he drew himself up beside his shield./The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/trusted in his own strength entirely/
The alliterative qualities of “sinows sprang asunder, bone-locks burst” (lines 817-8) provide a visual and auditory depiction of Beowulf’s physical abilities. Achilles uses his athletic inclination to avenge the death of his dear friend Patroklus. Prior to Patroklus’ death, Achilles preferred to wait while the Achaeans were “killed one after the other” (line 667). By contrast, Beowulf applies his muscular build to “avenge the evil done to the Danes” (lines 1670-1) and does so of his own free will. The two different hero’s journeys portray them as strong and battle ready, however Beowulf fights with noble intention and consideration for others while Achilles has more self-serving incentives for
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
There many similarities between the modern world and the world of Beowulf. Quite a few themes in Beowulf have been presented, including the pressure between religion, fate, good and evil, not to mention allegiance and blood ties. Today, are societies thinking any different from the thinking of early civilization? There are indeed many similarities between Beowulf’s world (Heorot) and our modern day world. Many similarities can be seen in different forms of media, entertainment, political affairs as well as violent behavior.
Questions of Honor: Beowulf Beowulf’s honor and integrity can be questioned throughout the entirety of the epic poem, Beowulf. Whether or not his actions are inspired by his own pompous arrogance or confidence, one can argue that he is a hero nonetheless. Evidence and experience prove that Beowulf is more of a fearless hero than an excessively prideful man, and his hubris is more than justified due to the formidable duties he is able to execute. Throughout the poem, Beowulf expresses his intense strength and courage to the fearful people in the poem. His daring sense of self-assurance is backed by his victories against all three monsters, (even though he suffers a tragic death after facing the dragon, it is a defeat nonetheless).
The poem and movie of “Beowulf” are very different and they are also sort of similar. There are a lot more differences between the two than you would expect and while some of them are minor differences others are drastically different. Most movies are very different from the book they are made from. The biggest differences between the movie and poem were the three battles. The three battles have drastic differences.
(“From the Day of Destiny” pp 199). These heroes showed that not only did their strengths help them defeat evil, but also the help of their magical swords. In addition, both epic and romantic heroes shared courageous traits throughout the story that made them so memorable. When faced with the challenge of defeating the dragon Beowulf said to his followers “ this fight is not yours… except me” ( “from beowulf” pp 33).
Hector knows that if he doesn't fight he will be a ‘shame’ and a ‘coward’ to the Trojan people, even though he knows that he can not win against Achilles he will have honor and pride looked upon him if he dies fighting. Hector knows that he can win both ways (stay with his family or die with pride and honor) but it still challenges him in a way because he has human-like emotions and that stops him from going and fighting Achilles. Trying to live a fulfilling life when you are torn into so many directions is hard. It's like trying to make a decision but always having that voice in the back of your head telling you to change it. It would be hard way of living life.
They both go through the “Hero’s Journey,” and display many characteristics of a hero. Beowulf, however, better fits the qualities of an epic hero due to his unselfish personality, his fearlessness, and his nobility. One reason Beowulf is the better epic hero is because his intentions and motives were selfless. He always fought to save the people, not for glory or treasures.
Beowulf and King Arthur are both portrayed as heroes and someone to look up to. Some similarities are both of them are very brave. They are also both very compelling leaders in their own respective ways. Even with their similarities they have differences in their heroic qualities such as Beowulf not really being a human in the sense that he can do superhuman things and King Arthur being a normal human being. It's also interesting to note that King Arthur was more of a hero for his character whereas Beowulf was more of a hero in the sense that he slays monsters and dragons.
Ironically in his efforts to gain fame and riches, Beowulf 's traits overlap with those of an epic hero. More important than Beowulf 's lack of morality though, is the warrior 's lack of growth throughout the story. Usually, in epic poems, the protagonists change
