Recently, many athletes, at the college and professional level, have been in trouble with the law. Athletes have gotten away with violating many laws and policies, but now they are starting to be punished. The NCAA has not done enough to punish their athletes, because the athletes are still behaving wrongly. Athletes that have faced consequences are still causing problems. Therefore, the NCAA needs to do something different in their punishing of the responsible colleges, coaches, and especially players. Jameis Winston, the starting quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles’ football team, has been a part of various crimes and misconducts. Winston was investigated for a possible rape conviction, and while he was not convicted he faces four possible student code conduct violations (Schlabach) (Weinstein). He awaits a …show more content…
Hernandez was heavily involved with the police, while he played for the Gators’ football team, but Urban Meyer, the University of Florida, or the NCAA did not fairly punished him (Bishop). Although he was not convicted, during college, he was uncooperative while he was questioned about a shooting, a recommended for a felony battery charge following a fight (Bishop). Meyer only suspended him from the football team after he failed multiple drug tests (Solotaroff). Following his college career, where he was not properly punished for his actions, he went on to play for the New England Patriots. Now Hernandez awaits his trial, for committing executional style murder, where there are numerous pieces of evidence against him (Bishop) (Solotaroff). If the NCAA would have stepped in and punished the University of Florida and Hernandez, then Hernandez probably not be in this situation (at least not a former professional athlete, that is costing his former team) and Urban Meyer would not still be recruiting criminals at Ohio State
Millions of Americans are watching March Madness. Advertisers make millions, and so do schools and the NCAA, but not the players. Just this weekend, President Barack Obama said it's time for the NCAA to rethink the way it protects and punishes athletes. "The students need to be taken better care of because they are generating a lot of revenue. It doesn't matter whether they get cut, it doesn't matter whether they get hurt.
This article addresses the Baltimore Ravens’ former running back Ray Rice and the ban that was placed on him as the result of a domestic violence incident he committed upon his then fiancé. At the time of the incident, the two were in a hotel elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Video surveillance showed Rice punching his wife twice, knocking her out on the second punch. The commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, responded by fining Rice and issuing him a two-game suspension. He was not prosecuted and his felony charge of committing third-degree aggravated assault was to be removed from his record after one year.
Aaron Hernandez was a star tight end for the New England Patriots, and his team had high expectations for the upcoming 2012 season, until he was accused of killing two people in Boston, Massachusetts. Many people believed that he was guilty, but Hernandez said he wasn 't. Hernandez went into court pleading not guilty, but by the time the trial was over he plead guilty. He did not receive the death penalty, like many believed he should 've. Aaron Hernandez went from being a starting tight end on the New England Patriots football team to life in
NFL players come in all shapes, sizes and attitudes, but what really defines the few that people cannot seem to decide whether they like or not. We have tons of players in NFL history that have been hated, followed and idolized. Yet we come across these certain “special” players who know how to do allot more than just play the sport. I decided to look more into the controversies that shadowed three of the NFL’s most well-known names, Richard Sherman, Terrel Owens and Chad “OchoCinco” Johnson. IF we are going to look at the controversies that surrounded these players then we have to first look at each of these players greatness’s.
(Leadbeater 2). The NFL has had issues dealing with punishments. For example, the NFL has a history of making larger suspensions in small drug offenses than they do for domestic violence charges. Josh Gordon was suspended for the entire 2015 season, while Greg Hardy was only suspended 4 games even though there were graphic images proving the severity of his crime. McCann also criticizes Goodell for not actually being an attorney, and believes “he does not grasp the consistency of transparency and process” (Leadbeater 2).
12 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception (Greg Hardy Stats,1). These may seem like random words and numbers to some people, but in actuality they are the stats for Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy through week 12 of the NFL season. It might seem odd to consider his stat line unless you know the whole story; Hardy is convicted for a major crime. He should not be allowed to be playing, yet he is on the field making a significant impact for the Cowboys. Professional athletes tend to be lightly punished for crimes both major and minor as compared to the general public.
In today’s society, we have former National Football League(NFL) quarterback Collin Kapernick who’s no longer in the NFL because of his protest against racial inequality. However, many people believe he is no longer in the NFL because of his talent. Kapernick led the 49ers to Super Bowl 47. Although they didn’t win, he threw for 302 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 62 yards. Therefore, he didn’t get kicked out of the league because he wasn’t good enough, but for sitting down during the national anthem.
In the satorical cartoon created by Rob Tornoe, an unpaid athlete is depicted as holding up the NCAA. While the athlete was the one who generated the profits that the NCAA is in possession of, they receive no compensation for the work they have done. The NCAA exploits athletes by forcing them to work harder and harder to keep up with demands. Instead of compensating the athletes for their increased efforts, the NCAA gets away with generating more profit. The NCAA gives the illusion that they are focused on supporting athletes, but in reality, they will not be stopped from taking advantage of poor college athletes.
The NCAA should not take away another person’s love and talent just because it is considered unpopular. The athletes do not get to choose what sport they are gifted in, so why punish them for it? The industry of college sports should not pay college athletes because it would get rid of the high-level competition and fairness for all
are the only people getting paid while the football, basketball, soccer, tennis players do all the hard work making the NCAA billions of dollars every year studies that were conducted found this to be very disturbing, considering the fact that college football games bring in 10.8 billion dollars a year, college basketball brings in 27 billion dollars a year, and not one football or basketball player sees any money made from the games they slaved over. The reason the people in charge of the NCAA will get away with what they’ve done to players for years on end is because the coaches and other staff are getting paid to shut their mouths and not speak out against the NCAA, because they need a job, these young men and women work so hard throughout their sport seasons with practices, training, conditioning, and games these students athletes need some type of pay and most of all educational help on and off the field to help them do good in school and focus on their passion. Now back to the first point made about the NCAA believing that if they partnered with universities around the world to grant every young man and woman a full scholarship to play sports for their brand and that school then they receive free benefits like a room and board, books
Already, the system of college athletics is corrupt. People see that all this money is being made and the college athletes are completely getting
If the NCAA was changed, or even abolished, the universities of today would most likely fix the issue of poor college athletes, whether they meant to or not. Universities are typically unabashed to admit that they are indeed running a businesses. They want elite teams that will not only earn the school a large income, but bring them to bowl games and championships. Colleges would have little to no issue with giving student-athletes the benefits of employees if the realm of collegiate sports became a free market. In fact, such a reform guarantees a competitive market to insure that college-players
The NCAA says that they don’t want to pay college athletes because of their scholarships. As the money keeps flowing more and more each and every year, it comes with more arguments about the athletes getting the money that they deserve. Sounds as if college athletes are blindly signing a sheet of paper and the NCAA has an evil smirk saying “You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into”. A court case had also gone down about a young college athlete and a car dealership. The dealership was using the athletes to make more sales with his cars and was doing behind the athletes back without
The fight for payment of college athletes has not been quick one as more and more issues keep popping up. The NCAA has never allowed payment of its athletes, but small steps towards the overall goal has questioned the NCAA’s past. Its’ decisions has stayed constant since its founding in 1906. The first issue in this decision would not occur until 1952 when the NCAA ruled to give The University of Kentucky the ‘death penalty’ for paying their athletes. This ‘death penalty’ is a one year program ban from participation, the harshest penalty the NCAA can give.
The NFL released a statement in reaction stating that he disregarded "an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are offered as its citizens.” not only does this disregard interacting with respect and honor, two virtues explicitly identified by Aristotle, but he put his job at risk. According to virtue ethics, in order to live well one has to figure out how to live in society, by angry a portion of society, he disregards living well, his function put this tell us at risk and acts in
