Before traveling out to Petaluma for the Chief Petty Officer Academy I was nervous, anxious, and excited all at the same time. I was not sure what I was going to learn or how it would change me as person for the better. Now that I am here and finishing week four, I can honestly say it has been one of the most eye opening experiences of my life. I have learned more about myself in the past four weeks than I have in a lifetime. Attending the Chief Petty Officer Academy was very beneficial for my career, it has taught me how to coach someone, showed me why diversity is so important in the work place, and has me thinking of ways to make a better command climate at my unit so we can eradicate sexual assault all together. Having said that, those were only a few innovative lessons I have learned while being here. …show more content…
By using these new set of skills, it will help me assist others in getting from where they are now, to where they want to be with their performance and with them making their own choices. By taking time to understand their situation and deeply listen to what they have to say as well as being fully engaged so that they can truly be understood will get me to that next level of being a better leader. This will create a sense of connection and comfort, fostering a climate of openness and trust with that individual. I will use “SMART goals” to develop a goal with high personal meaning and relevance ensuring that the goals are, in fact, the individual I am coaching. This will make some situations at work a whole lot easier to deal
Reflective Analytical Account. The aim of the lecture was to explore the role of Compassion within SCPHN practice. Throughout the session we followed and discussed the Francis Report, the Compassion In Practice (6C’s) strategy and the 2016 nursing strategy.
After glancing over the criteria this course provides, I am very excited to have the opportunity to learn more about the qualities of a Residence Assistance. After I have finished this course, the four things I hope to have learned are, a wide knowledge about how to excel as a Resident Assistant, tips on how to manage work, social, and student life as an RA, ideas of how to present material to diverse cultural backgrounds, and helpful ways to build upon leadership qualities. My Idea of the Primary Role of an RA I live in Woody/Shales in the Lafollette complex and from my community and interaction with my RA, I have noticed that my RA is not very social.
AP Scholar with Honor Award, it was presented to me for having completed a rigorous series of college-level courses and exams. President 's Education Award Program was awarded to me during ninth grade for my outstanding academic achievements. University Interscholastic League Scholar Award was presented to me for the Number Sense competition where my team won second place over all.
1. One thing I did not expect as a young man during my journey in the Coast Guard, whether 4 years or 30, that I would have the privilege to meet some great leaders. I usually had the proper leadership for the stage of my career I was in to help me get to the next stage. BM2 Welch was there for the first stage, rough around the edges and a stickler for detail. Since I was still so new to the Coast Guard, I needed the firm hand BM2 provided.
Pursuing a degree with APUS is the next big step to furthering my education and starting a career. I have children. I 'm a mother of four and I always wanted what was best for them. I had to make certain decisions and scafices for them and not going to college is one.
I have gained knowledge because I enrolling in higher level classes such as honors and AP classes. They changed me by having a better understanding of how college is going to be like for me in the future. Some honors and AP classes I have taken are: Geography, computer science, Spanish, pre-calculus, anatomy, U.S history, statistics, and government. All the preparation of my classes, teachers, and the programs I have participated in have helped me to know that I can go to college and if I try I know can be successful. I was in AVID my 7th and 8th grade years and in the Scholars program during my freshman year, but my second year of high school, I decided it was best for me to manage my way out of the Scholars program because I preferred
A2d. Discuss two short-term SMART goals that will help improve your leadership practice. The first leadership skill I will develop is that of “sharpening your saw” (Covey, 1989). It is vital as a leader, especially as a new manager, to learn and develop leadership skills and better understand leadership practices. To sharpen my saw I will read or study a scholarly article or book for 30 minutes a day, 3 days per week for the next two months.
Initially, I had a few friends attend the academy and they have all told me that it was challenging, but it was a great experience. However, it was my father who first introduced me the Naval Academy and guided me onto the right path for which
Through experience we develop and hone our leadership proficiency. I will set goals in the following three areas, to continue my growth and serve our team as a leader in the organization. 1. Leaders inspire commitment, and know they cannot command it. I will describe a compelling image of what our future could be like.
The three skills are Leads, Develops, and Achieves. I try to use this method of leadership when leading others I influence and motivate them to pursue the goal. Also by leading from the form and doing setting the standard. Secondly, when developing my subordinates, I try to implement a positive environment so that all my soldiers can flourish and work as a team. A positive environment helps encourage soldiers to take the initiative and may cause them to want to work harder to gain more individual responsibility.
Completing Worksheet 1 and 2 was a positive eye opening experience. Through observational data, I was able to confirm and challenge my own assumptions regarding school improvement and equity throughout PSU. Using an equity lens allowed me to ask questions and focus on different elements of PSU culture I found concerning or, believed needed reform. Overall, I’m glad I had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at our school’s health and wellness center. An important aspect of staying happy and healthy requires fully utilizing all the resources available at PSU.
Another challenge of this assignment is to write goals for improvement of my leadership style. I will be using the SMART goal format. SMART goals are written in a specific format to have all the components of a well-written goal. This type of goal setting allows a person or team to be focused on the outcome and not be distracted by a poorly written abstract of a goal. Two SMART goals that I will focus on to improve my leadership are developing my EI and seeking understanding first.
Academic success to me is achieving good grades and understanding the material to get good grades. Academic success also means to have an good attendance. I already get mostly A’s and B’s, but I am not good at staying on top of things. To improve my academic success I will attend class more often, be more organized, pay attention in class, and not procrastinate.
This semester at COSTAATT was one of the hardest I ever experience thus far, but I must admit that it was also one of those that encouraged me to really come out of my comfort zone and work harder than ever before. Leadership and Ethics opened my eyes to what leadership really means, I learned that people aren’t necessarily born leaders, that leadership (more importantly, good leadership) can be learned, practiced, and mastered. I also learned that I can be my biggest roadblock to my own success as well as the biggest positive influence. It do not matter the rank, position or status, anyone can lead anyone else. In this course I became more introspective about my current leadership roles and the tweaks I could make to communicate more effectively and be a “better” leader
Although I did well in college writing 101 and 102, writing has never been my strong point of school, but I do feel like I learned very much this year. First semester was a little bit easier than this semester because all of the sources that were used in the essay were given to you, so no time was spent evaluating and finding the perfect sources for your paper. Overall, I kept my work ethic the same throughout both semesters by taking the same individual steps to complete all of the essays. The first paper of this semester was difficult for me, but by the final research paper, I felt more confident and the research process did become easier for me as this semester progressed. There are still some things that I can improve on, such as counter arguments and sentence structure, but generally the writing process went well for me.
