There are many symptoms for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder such as: reliving the traumatic event in your head over and over and a deep dark sadness. Possibly may even be the urge to kill if those psychological diseases are caused by a man murdering a beloved child. For Ruth, this became all too much of a reality, but a loving husband who couldn’t see his wife go through with that took action. Ruth going through a deep depression and post-traumatic stress, over the loss of her son, Frank, drove Matt to killing Richard Strout, Franks killer. Depression is a serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.(http://www.psychiatry.org) Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is an anxiety …show more content…
The untimely murder of her youngest son Frank propelled Ruth into a deep and dark depression that inevitably lead to Matt feeling obligated to take revenge on his son's killer. “Ruth sees him. She sees him too much. She was at Sunnyhurts today getting cigarettes and aspirin, and there he was… It’s killing her” (Dubus 566). Not even mentioning that she has been buying nothing but cigarettes and aspirin like crazy; she has also been seeing her son’s killer, Richard, everywhere which is making the situation more traumatic for Ruth. Like any normal married couple what one partner feels will impact the life of his or her spouse exponentially. “Beneath her eyes there was swelling from the three days she had suffered.”(Dubus 566). Matt saw pain and depression in the eyes of his wife and the hurting inside of her heart, seeing that would drive any husband to do anything needed to subdue the pain. The pain of seeing a hurt wife should be the most pain any, good, husband will ever go through. The pressure of a wife on the verge of possibly killing herself from the depression that is eating her away is a main reason for Matt’s plot of revenge and murder of …show more content…
“...she was living with a bastard.”(Dubus 569). Ruth says this referring to Richards ex-wife; portraying her true negative feelings towards the antagonist, Richard. Any parent would feel the need for vengeance of the murderer of his or her son and that is exactly what Ruth wanted to do. “Ruth would shoot him herself, if she thought she could hit him.”(Dubus 568). This quote, by Matt is referring to how the stress, grief and depression was driving Ruth so mad that she was willing to kill him with no problem. Her willingness to kill Richard with absolutely no remorse for what she would have done shows that psychologically she is going through a hard emotional time with post traumatic stress. Matt was forced to put his foot down; any good husband would refuse to watch his wife keep obsessing over her sons death and have the stress of this horrendous situation tear her down mentally. Throughout the story, Matt does not want to see his wife murder another man simply because she was in no right set of mind to do so. “She sees him all the time. It makes her cry.”(Dubus 567). If even seeing the man who murdered her son in cold blood makes her cry there is absolutely no chance that she would be able to focus to kill Richard. However, Matt simply just felt anger and disdain towards Richard and he had the mental focus

In chapter 22 there are several betrayals that occur. Some of these betrayals happened over time, but others occurred all of a sudden or happened even earlier. Some of Matt's closets friends and people who he thought loved him betrayed him. El Patron wished to take away Matt's heart for himself. Emilia betrayed Maria by not telling her about their mother.
Baseball in the 1920’s was the past time of America and was the most viewed sport during this time period. In 1914, Joe Dunn owner of the Baltimore Orioles signed Babe Ruth. A teammate of his called him “Jacks newest babe.” The nickname stuck to him, and he is now known as Babe Ruth. Ruth is considered to be the best baseball player to have ever played the game.
Many may say George “Babe” Ruth is the greatest American baseball player of all time, but do they really know what they are talking about. To start out, the era in which Ruth played in was in the time of segregation, depression and hostility. In his era outstanding players like Willie Hays, Hank Aaron, and Sandy Koufax were stuck in the Negro leagues because of racism. Adding to that, many talented baseball players were involved in World War I; Babe was not, so technically one may consider them the true American heroes. Babe Ruth is not a true All-American baseball hero because his stats do not compare to modern day baseball, he was an inappropriate and irresponsible “role model”, and in his era, Baseball had many advantages compared to today.

In the movie Dead Man Walking we meet a man on death row and a nun who is trying to be his spiritual counselor. He realized throughout the movie what his idea of the story was and in the end accepting what he did. We watch painfully him die and watching his last exhale of air was so powerful. I felt so much empathy for him even though he was guilty. I think that is what the people who wrote the movie were aiming for.
The Worst Crime: Matt’s or Richard’s “Killings”, written by Andre Dubus, illustrates how the death of a loved one may lead to dire consequences for all the parties included. Matt Fowler’s son, Frank, was murdered in cold blood by a jealous soon-to-be ex-husband, Richard Strout. When the death of Frank sunk into the lives of the Fowler’s, Matt believed he had to retaliate in some sort of fashion. The sort of fashion he chose was to seek revenge and kill Richard for his wrongdoings, which he did. Some people believe that the murder committed by Richard Strout can be considered more serious because of his act of passion and his lackadaisical style of living without worrying about his future.
The reason as to why Richard pulled the trigger was because he believed that since the divorce had not been fully settled, that he was still technically married to Mary Ann. Matt sought vengeance against Richard because of his thoughtless action of killing a man of innocence. Frank’s innocence would haunt Ruth to the point where if she had seen Richard in public, a blanket of sorrow would engulf her. This sadness finally overwhelmed her, leading her to tell Matt that she could not stand seeing Richard functioning on a daily basis. The analogy of an eye-for-an-eye can be used to explain the reason as to Matt put a bullet into Richard.

“As usual, she was broke, dumping single dollar bills, change, pennies on the counter to pay for the one-way ticket to Ohio. As I stepped on the bus she squeezed a bunch of bills and change into my hand. ‘That’s all I have,’ she said. I counted it. Fourteen dollars” (McBride 189).
The setting in the house of scorpion can be pictured as a dry, rigid place just beyond the border of America. The country that this novel takes place in has a deep dark secret behind it’s one-colored, aristocracy government. And in this novel, there is only one person willing to find what that secret is, and that’s matt. Matt is a young boy who progresses into a teenager throughout the book, but he doesn't have normal struggles. He goes through puberty just as a normal teen, but there something different about him.
