In the present business world, companies strive to be so politically correct, ethical, and unbiased that is seems ludicrous that language bias could still be a problem. In Lisa Scherzer’s article titled ”Workers Sue Target for Racially Offensive Document”, the author reveals that the usage of language bias is still an issue, even in large companies such as Target. While the document was not meant to be circulated outside of management, its apparition raises awareness concerning the racial slurs, stereotypes, and racist humor utilized by Target’s management against Hispanic employees. First, language bias appears in the form of racially charged words was used by Target’s management. One of the plaintiffs claims that the management team uses ethnic slurs, such as the term “wetback”, when addressing Mexican employees (Scherzer).

Institutional discrimination focusses on the mistreatment of a larger group of people such as minorities, while individual discrimination focuses on the mistreatment of a single person. I think institutional discrimination is a more serious social issue because for the obvious reason that it affects more people, and also affects the logistics of society on a larger scale, for example, institutional discrimination has affected African-American home buyers. Statistics show that if you are African-American you are sixty percent less likely to get approved for a home loan, not only is their approval chance less but if they do get approved statistics show that their loan interest rates are also higher than that of white people. The EEOC as defined by my resource is, “The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that enforces federal laws prohibiting workplace discrimination.” This agency was created back in 1964 when the Civil Rights Act was relevant. The goal was to initially protect minorities so they have just a much of an opportunity to work as everyone else. Today they protect more than just African Americans, but everyone! Racial discrimination is still a concept seen in the modern day. Racial discrimination is the unequal treatment towards a group based off of their race, color, or ethnicity. “A 2001 survey, for example, found that more than one-third of blacks and nearly 20% of Hispanics and Asians reported that they had personally been passed over for a job or promotion because of their race or ethnicity (Schiller 2004),” writes Devah Pager and Hana Shepherd in their article The Sociology of Discrimination. A hispanic female earns roughly 54 cents for every dollar earned by a white. This accounts for a loss of almost $24,000 in a year’s time. In 2012 the jobless rate was 10.3% for hispanics. The novel centres itself around three women: Aibileen Clark; A nanny and housekeeper for the Leefolt family, Minny Jackson; A forthright maid, And Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan; A newly-made college graduate.

Bias is used in everyday life. It mostly affects our subconscious. When something affects our subconscious, it means that an idea affects us without knowing that it affects us. Bias is used in terms of race, religion, work ethic, brands, and gender. An example of bias is when two equally qualified people are applying for a job, the employer picks the male over the woman for no specific reason.

During the course of volunteering with various service organizations, I have observed discrimination on several occasions. Discrimination and Civil rights are principles that will always be unfinished, not because of a lack of government support, but because of a failure to change the opinion of most Americans. To this day, I find that discrimination is still a concept difficult to explain to a person of Caucasian heritage, for they have not experienced prejudice or a denial of rights. In my opinion, America has not fully embraced or complied with the Civil Rights Act.
