The issue of discrimination at the places of work is a negative situation that can breed hatred and have negative impacts on the workers. Discrimination comes in form of race, language or even social status in a group of people. In this case, the non-Hispanics in the organization are being discriminated against by their Hispanic counterparts simply because they cannot understand the language. The situation can be bad for the organization because it may lead to slowdown of production and lower the morale of the employees. This needs to be changed. In the present business world, companies strive to be so politically correct, ethical, and unbiased that is seems ludicrous that language bias could still be a problem. In Lisa Scherzer’s article titled ”Workers Sue Target for Racially Offensive Document”, the author reveals that the usage of language bias is still an issue, even in large companies such as Target. While the document was not meant to be circulated outside of management, its apparition raises awareness concerning the racial slurs, stereotypes, and racist humor utilized by Target’s management against Hispanic employees. Institutional discrimination focusses on the mistreatment of a larger group of people such as minorities, while individual discrimination focuses on the mistreatment of a single person. Bias is used in everyday life. It mostly affects our subconscious. When something affects our subconscious, it means that an idea affects us without knowing that it affects us. Bias is used in terms of race, religion, work ethic, brands, and gender. An example of bias is when two equally qualified people are applying for a job, the employer picks the male over the woman for no specific reason.
During the course of volunteering with various service organizations, I have observed discrimination on several occasions. Discrimination and Civil rights are principles that will always be unfinished, not because of a lack of government support, but because of a failure to change the opinion of most Americans. To this day, I find that discrimination is still a concept difficult to explain to a person of Caucasian heritage, for they have not experienced prejudice or a denial of rights. In my opinion, America has not fully embraced or complied with the Civil Rights Act.
