Summary
The thematic unit “Voting Rights: The Evolution of Equal Voting Right in the United States” is about how U.S citizens earned their right to vote. Ideally, all people should have had voting right at the same time. However, certain people were able to vote before others, and certain groups had to fight for their right to vote. This thematic unit serves to teach young students the value in voting, and how certain people had to struggle to earn the right to vote. This unit will take about 6 weeks, and is designed for 3rd grade students. The disciplines included in this unit are civics and government, reading, social studies and writing.

These two movements demonstrate how woman and African Americans had to fight to be able to vote. The history and reasoning for these two movements will be embedded throughout the unit, and across disciplines. Since this thematic unit is aimed for elementary school, the explanations of the movements will be age appropriate.
Women’s Suffrage Movement
The Women’s Suffrage Movement addressed equal rights for women. The movement started as a convention in 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York. The convention discussed the rights of women, and decided women needed to have a political identity. On August 26, 1920 the 19th amendment was added to the constitution, which said no one should be denied the right to vote based on sex. After 72 years of protests, rallies and marches, women were finally guaranteed the right to vote (The fight for women’s suffrage 2009 & The 19th amendment n.d).

This campaign was aimed to register African Americans in Mississippi because of the low number of registered black voters. Freedom Summer was organized by the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The volunteers of the campaign were African American and white college students from the north. As expected, the volunteers faced backlash and harassment from the white population of Mississippi. Women used many different ways to earn the right to vote in the Women's Suffrage Movement. The first method was parading in the streets. There was a parade with floats and lots of women marching holding signs demanding the right to vote. This method was used to get publicity for their cause. It was reported about in the newspaper.
The history.com’s staff explains the stages that the women of the past went through to gain them the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920. Simplified the 19th Amendment is the right for the citizens of the United States to be able to vote and not be denied by the United States or by any State on account of their sex. It talks about when the 14th amendment was ratified in 1868, it granted all citizen the right to be able to vote. But they defined “citizen as male”, giving the right to vote to the black men. Because of this many women, including Susan B. Anthony rallied and protested the 15th amendment, believing that it could push lawmakers into making it so that women could vote along with the men.
In the women 's suffrage movement the women used many different tactics to get their cause across to government. On tactic that they used was they organized a parade. The girls were smart in the timing of the parade. They that President Woodrow Wilson was getting inaugurated and that their would be a large crowd already in the area. With a large crowd it would be easier for the women to spread the word about how they should be able to vote.
Women used many different methods to earn the right to vote in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. One method women used to earn support is that they organized a parade in Washington, D.C., the same day the president was coming into town so that there was large crowds. Many of the people in the crowd were men who, along with drinking also disagreed with the right for women to vote. They began to yell then even throw objects at the women walking in the parade. Eventually, the police walked away giving the men the opportunity to attack.
During Progressive Era, there were many reforms that occurred, such as Child Labor Reform or Pure Food and Drug Act. Women Suffrage Movement was the last remarkable reform, and it was fighting about the right of women to vote, which was basically about women’s right movement. Many great leaders – Elizabeth Cad Stanton and Susan B. Anthony - formed the National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Although those influential leaders faced hardship during this movement, they never gave up and kept trying their best. This movement was occurred in New York that has a huge impact on the whole United States.
During the war when the amendments were being put into place many women hoped that they would be granted the same right that were given to free slaves. Although it was a big step for African Americans. This then made the women’s movement have two separate parties one being the National Woman Suffrage Association and the other being American Women Suffrage Association. Both of these associations campaigned for women suffrage believing that it could only be acquired through a constitutional amendment and not just different states.
This movement fought for the right for women to vote because women were denied the democratic rights that were given to men and were forced to focus on the cult of domesticity. The movement started in the late eighteenth century however it was renewed during the Second Great Awakening when reform movements started gaining popularity. The suffrage movement was aided by the abolition movement because slavery gave women a reason to unite for a separate cause. This was a new reform movement, unlike women’s suffrage and abolition, which both had roots that were as deep as those of the country’s, and was unique because of the unusually undemocratic responses that society and its people reacted with. To accomplish social equality and justice has been a long controversial issue in U.S. history. Voting Rights Act of 1965 should be understood as a tremendous accomplishment today because it not only represent a symbol of the triumph of fighting social injustice, but also open the first gate for African American and minority to strive for more political power in order to create a “great society.”
This movement not only involved with white suffragists, but also with the black suffragists; the whole event was concentrating on sex and racial equality. "As Stanton consistently put it, the republican lesson of the war was that popular sovereignty, the equal political rights of all individuals, preceded and underlay government and nations.... The belief that the right to vote was the individual 's natural right made the case for woman suffrage much stronger." (Dubois, 91) Stanton believed that through the lesion of equal political rights and individual’s natural right made the woman suffrage even stronger.
The women’s suffrage movement was a very difficult time for these women at the time. On June 20, 1908 is when the suffrage day happened and everyone was there including the women who wanted their right to vote. The women went through some difficulties to get their right to vote. Speeches were being given that day. Four years later a march happened.
In the early 20th century, women fought for the right to vote. After more than half a century of continuous activism, the 19th amendment was passed, granting women voting rights. This triumph was merely the beginning of what the women’s rights movement would accomplish. Over the next several decades, women campaigned for policies which challenged societal norms and gave them equal footing with men. Pinpointing a sole cause of this movement has proved to be somewhat problematic, as there are several factors to its rise.

This document, along with the constitution, is what the administration of the United States was founded on. The men who created these documents were citizens striving for equal rights and representation in government. Ironically, these rights the founding fathers worked so hard to create for themselves were not granted to women in their newly established nation.

Anthony, a woman who was arrested for illegally voting in the president election of 1872, in her “On Women's Right to Vote” speech, argues that women deserve to be treated as citizens of America and be able to vote and have all the rights that white males in America have. She begins by introducing her purpose, then provides evidence of how women are citizens of America, not just males by using the preamble of the Constitution, then goes on about the how this problem has became a big problem and occurs in every home in the nation, and finally states that women deserve rights because the discrimination against them is not valid because the laws and constitutions give rights to every CITIZEN in America. Anthony purpose is to make the woman of America realize that the treatment and limitations that hold them back are not correct because they are citizens and they deserve to be treated like one. She adopts a expressive and confident tone to encourage and light the hearts of American woman. To make her speech effective, she incorporates ethos in her speech to support her claims and reasons.
