Women's Rights During The Progressive Era

Susan B. Anthony was born into a Quaker family, with the hope that everyone would one day be treated equal. She denied a chance to speak at a temperance convention because she was a woman(Susan B. Anthony). From this point on, she knew that she needed to make a change. Susan B. Anthony, because of her intense work involving women 's’ rights, highly influenced all of the societies and beliefs that were yet to come. She employed a huge role in our history because of the fact that she advocated for women’s rights, for the integration of women in the workforce, and for the abolition of slavery.

In the mid-1800s, many Americans had concerns about the issues occurring and the impact they made on the United States. To put an end to these numerous issues, many Americans decided to form groups, organizations, and also individuals. They would come up with a variety of strategies to make a change. One of the many issues was women rights. In the mid-1800s, women had a hard time being a woman back then.

The biggest accomplishment of this presidency was his program known as The New Deal, which Roosevelt introduced in the first one hundred days of his presidency as an attempt to reform the nation following war, depression, and greed. With the formation of the National Recovery Administration in June of 1933, industrialists were encouraged to establish fair working conditions, set prices, and minimize competition through “codes” which would ensure fair treatment of workers and promote the economy in general. The New Deal also sought to promote organization of labor through the Committee of Industrial Organization (CIO), which aimed to unionize major industries, even steel and automobiles (which had been extremely anti-union in the past). This is the most drastic shift that can be seen in the relationship between government and labor in the United States, and it is clearly in favor of the labor workers. This demonstrates that in the reform which seemed to end this period of unrest, the government finally began to consistently side with labor

Women had just received the right to vote, yet there was still many discriminatory actions towards women. This dramatic period in time took place during the Great Depression, which caused women’s rights to be overlooked.

Women used many different methods to earn the right to vote in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. One method women used to earn support is that they organized a parade in Washington, D.C., the same day the president was coming into town so that there was large crowds. Many of the people in the crowd were men who, along with drinking also disagreed with the right for women to vote. They began to yell then even throw objects at the women walking in the parade. Eventually, the police walked away giving the men the opportunity to attack.

Throughout her life time, Jane Addams helped change the Progressive Era for the better. Jane Adams committed her entire life to helping the poor. She did this, however, in a unique way. She created a program in order to help immigrate the poor into a regular American society. She also was an active advocate for women’s suffrage.

Working women might have had the passion needed to further the Progressive Movement, but they didn’t have the finances to fund it. Luckily for them, plenty of wealthy women supported the fight for women’s equality and were willing to provide the financial backing necessary. Addams pushed for sanitation, safe working conditions, womens rights and suffrage, tenement house regulation, child labor laws, eight hour work days, and fair wages. Jacob Riis was a mukracker and photo journalist who chronicled immigrant life in urban cities (Nguyen 6). Riis started as a police reporter/photographer in New York and used his experience to put together, “How the Other Half Lives.” It was a piece exposing the horrible lives of the immigrant working class; furthermore, the book displayed pictures of people sleeping on floor mattresses, dirty children wondering the alleys, no windows in crowded tenement houses, and kids digging through human waste in the city (Nguyen

Also During this timing child labor was at it highest and worst, having the progressives convince the states to pass laws that set a minimum age for employment and established other limits on child labor, such as maximum hours children could work also having young children to be in school instead of at work. Being a woman at this time wasn’t its best. Woman having lower pay than men while doing the same amount of work, people having to work in worst of conditions, Having the union “NAWSA’s” be formed and woman getting their rights. Jane Addams The Progressive Era, 1890-1920, accomplished great change in the Unites States of America. Many reformers and activits demanded for change in education, food and drug policies, and most importantly the govermenet. The goal for the movement was the purify the nation.
