Case Study Shane Bauer, an investigative journalist with Mother Jones, spent four months as a guard at Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, LA from November 2014 to February 2015. Winn Correctional is a private, for-profit prison that is owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). It is also the oldest privately operated medium-security facility in the country (Bauer, 2016). During his time there, Bauer discovered just how terribly some of these prisons are run and the awful conditions that inmates are forced to suffer through. Bauer discusses his experiences at Winn, the horrible conditions of the prison that he witnessed, as well as the nonchalance of the other guards when it came to the prisoners and their safety. …show more content…
Not only do these new recruits receive only a limited amount of training, but they are also taught to use force when it comes to the inmates misbehaving or disrespecting a guard (Bauer, 2016). During training, it was recommended that Bauer and his fellow recruits do not attempt to break up a fight between inmates because it would be too dangerous considering they will not be carrying pepper spray or a nightstick. Bauer goes on to talk about the realization that the inmates are very much in control of the prison. This is emphasized by the fact that the prison is very understaffed and there are only about two guards per tier, which holds nearly 100 inmates (Bauer, 2016). As well, as mentioned before, the guards are not very well trained and equipped to handle these inmates. Guards are also not very motivated to put themselves in harm’s way due to the fact that entry level guards only make minimum wage ($9.00/hr), which is $3.50 less than the wage of their public prison counterparts. Multiple human rights organizations, as well as political and social organizations, are condemning what they are calling a “new form of inhumane exploitation in the United States,” where a prison population of up to 2 million – mostly Black and Hispanic are working for various industries for a subsistence wage (Pelaez, 2008). For the businesspersons who have invested in the prison industry, however, it has been like finding a ‘pot of gold.’ All of their workers are fulltime, and never arrive late or are absent. Moreover, if they don’t like the pay of 25 cents an hour and refuse to work, they are locked up in isolation
Each inmate should be counted at specific location and time. No person carrying a firearm should ever be allowed admittance inside the jail. When regarding facility lock-downs: notify the central control room to contact the appropriate personnel and any additional officers who can respond quickly, make sure all inmates are in their cells or dorms, conduct a formal count, and maintain the safety and security of the inmates and responding
When I arrived on shift we were advised during pass on that inmate Ellery, Danielle Jean (A-13367) was upset due to multiple inmates being showered out and placed in her cell (Cell 1). Her along with inmate Roskey, Skylar Lynne (A-14203) antagonized and bullied both inmate Knight and Robertson until they were at their breaking point. It got to the point where inmate Belanger tried to intervene and got in a heated argument with Roskey, which almost boiled over turning into a physical altercation between the two. Ever since inmate Roskey was placed with Ellery it created a cancer within the cell with the two feeding off of each other. As ordered by Sgt.

Because a lot of the COs were from the city as opposed to rural New York, they were more accustomed to the diverse nature of the inmates. For those who didn’t understand, it may have been difficult for them to understand how to interact with the inmates that were different from
Throughout the course of the semester our class discussions have centered around the question, how did the United States come to hold the title of the highest rate of incarceration in the world. All of the books and films covered in class have pointed out how race and policing practices are linked to mass incarceration. Lockdown America: Police and Prisons in the Age of Crisis by Christian Parenti discusses these issues. In his book Parenti analysis how the criminal justice system came to be what it is today, economically and politically. Parenti then discusses policing and policing on immigrants.
During this search the staff will give the inmate a “pat” down and a strip search. Before this happens there must be a supervisor there for review and written approval. These precautions are for security purposes for the entire facility to make sure there are no weapons or contraband being smuggled in. Another form of security is undressing the inmates and taking them out of their personal clothes and putting them in orange jail clothing or identifiable jail clothing. Jail security is extremely important to operate a safe secure facility.
On an unmistakable morning this past February, the detainees in the B Yard of Pelican Bay State Prison documented out of their cellblock a couple at once and let a cool, salty breeze blow over their bodies. Their home, the California jail framework 's lasting location for its most solidified criminals, is in Crescent City, on the edge of a redwood timberland—around four miles from the Pacific Ocean in one course and 20 miles from the Oregon fringe in the other. This is their yard time. The greater part of the detainees have a place with one of California 's six fundamental jail possess: Nuestra Family, the Mexican Mafia, the Aryan Brotherhood, the Black Guerrilla Family, the Northern Structure, or the Nazi Lowriders (the last two are
The question as to whether humans are inherently evil or good has been asked time and time again. Despite the fact Humans are naturally evil based on how they act under grim situations, the tendency of people to follow leaders that are evil, and how people have caused destruction, and have committed terrible acts throughout time. Humans often do terrible things when the situation for them is dire, even with the knowledge that doing said terrible things will only further the problem. A famous example of this is present in the story surrounding the wreck of the french ship, the Méduse.
The inner moral compulsion to obey is what drives most social organizations. Sykes (2007) described several structural defects that occurred in the New Jersey State prison. Sykes (2007) argues that power in prison is not based on authority therefore prison officials have to find other means to get prisoners to abide by the rules and regulations. The ability to use force to maintain order on a large scale in the prison is an illusion. According to Sykes (2007), Certain privileges such mailing and visiting, personal possessions, time-off for good behavior etc. are given to the inmate all at once upon his or her arrival to the prison.

There are multiple parts that make up a prison community. One of the main components of the prison culture is the correctional officer. These are the individuals that are responsible for the security at correctional facilities such as a prison or jails, are better known as CO’s or correctional officers. Typically, the higher the security levels of the prison, the lower the ratio of inmates to correctional officers. The CO's are there to keep the prisoner's in order, but what about officers'?
They were willing participants in a psychological study into the abuse of power in a prison context, orchestrated by the Stanford University psychology department. The prisoners and guards were assigned their roles and given vague directions on how to act. The situation rapidly deteriorated as prisoners rioted, and guards resorted to excessive use of force in order to assert authority. The guards abused the prisoners,
Unfair Treatment of Prisoners Hundreds of thousands of prisoners are provoked and bullied by prison guards everyday. They are treated like dirt, with no chance of being rehabilitated, which was the reason they went to prison. Prisoners are mistreated inside prisons.
This conflicts with the actual relationship between the officer and the inmate. Another example of an inappropriate relationship between the officer and the inmate would be the introduction to contraband within the cell walls. This provides the inmates with opportunities to continue their unethical behavior even within the walls. Many correctional officers will often
