Being afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening is called fear. In the short story The Most Dangerous Man by Richard Connell is a short story about fear and battling against two men to see who wins the hunting game. Rainsford has to fight to the end of the game to win if he does not then he will lose. To beat General Zaroff Rainsford needs to step up his game and be smart and not be lazy. As Rainsford is getting close to the game he need to be smart because General Zaroff will catch up and he could defeat Rainsford. Without the setting and plot in this story the story would have not been complete. As Rainsford is hiding in the tree from General Zaroff he says “I will not lose my nerve. I will not” (12). Rainsford is hiding in the tree because Rainsford is thinking that Zaroff is going to kill him. If he jumps out then he may get caught and get killed. If Rainsford lost his nerve when he was in the tree then he would have lost his chance in winning the game or not trying to give up. Rainsford is very anxious to win this game and tries not to fall out of the tree while he is trying to hide. …show more content…

As Rainsford is battling the quicksand, “then as he stepped forward, his foot sank into the ooze. He tried to wrench it back, but the muck sucked viciously at his foot as if it were a giant leech. With a violent effort, he tore his feet loose. He knew where he was now. Death Swamp and its quicksand.” (12). Rainsford is struggling when his foot is in the quicksand and he must be thinking about what happens at the end of the game. Could this be the last of the game or does it continue? Rainsford must fight his fear to get ahead of the General if not he will lose the
