Being afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening is called fear. In the short story The Most Dangerous Man by Richard Connell is a short story about fear and battling against two men to see who wins the hunting game. As Rainsford is getting close to the game he need to be smart because General Zaroff will catch up and he could defeat Rainsford. Without the setting and plot in this story the story would have not been complete. As Rainsford is hiding in the tree from General Zaroff he says “I will not lose my nerve. I will not” (12). Rainsford is hiding in the tree because Rainsford is thinking that Zaroff is going to kill him. If he jumps out then he may get caught and get killed. As Rainsford is battling the quicksand, “then as he stepped forward, his foot sank into the ooze. He tried to wrench it back, but the muck sucked viciously at his foot as if it were a giant leech. With a violent effort, he tore his feet loose. He knew where he was now. Death Swamp and its quicksand.” (12). Rainsford is struggling when his foot is in the quicksand and he must be thinking about what happens at the end of the game. Could this be the last of the game or does it continue? Rainsford must fight his fear to get ahead of the General if not he will lose the
Firstly, when Rainsford is given the chance to play General Zaroff’s game, he declines but changes his mind when General Zaroff states, “You will find my idea of sport more diverting than Ivan's” (Connell). This is the first sign Rainsford shows that he wants to survive. Rainsford knows that he doesn’t have a chance of survival if he declines General Zaroff’s game and plays Ivan’s instead. However, if Rainsford plays Zaroff’s game, he knows that he has a chance to survive even though the chance is very slim. Furthermore, after Rainsford had found a huge dead tree leaning against a smaller living one, he got to work with his knife and hid behind a log after he completed his task.
Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. Empty. This house is so big, everywhere I turn there is a new room I have yet to be in. Ever since I have killed Zaroff, things have been lonely and boring. What if I had not killed him?
In the short story The Most Dangerous Game, the author Richard Connell shows that Rainsford needs control of his emotions, patience , and expert hunting and decision making skills in order to defeat Zaroff. Rainsford needs to gain control of his emotions to outthink Zaroff, who symbolizes Rainsfords "steep hill". When he finds that he is going to be hunted his natural instinct is to run and panic, but then he stops to look around and get a grip on the task at hand. Then at a critical moment when Zaroff finds him in a tree, Rainsford panics again because he realizes Zaroff is on his trail and is toying with him. Once again, he gains control of his emotions and formulates a plan.
He had to fight himself to stay on track. He was so scared in the jungle while the General was trying to hunt him. On page 186, it says “He could not say where he was. That was suicide.” This shows the reader that Rainsford may be thinking of what could go wrong, and is not thinking on the positive side of things.
What is fear? Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief of someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or threat. In my own words fear is a feeling people get when someone is going to kill them. But not all fear is bad because some people feel fear differently How is fear used in “The Crucible” ?
The the last scene is significant because Rainsford has the confidence and skills to win against General Zaroff. Likewise, how he trusts his instincts and himself to set up the traps, but also, jump off a cliff. Richard Connell uses situational irony because Rainsford the hunter becomes the hunted. It states how Rainsford made a trap in the quicksand. As well as, when he jumped off the cliff he made good decisions.
Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.

When your life is on the line, it can be very unforgettable. Fortunately, not everyone goes through these situations. There are people who, however, have been through these situations, and those people will never forget what has happened to them. In Richard Connell's the short story "The Most Dangerous Game," big game hunter Sanger Rainesford is tested in the following ways: strong versus the weak, the value of life, and becoming what he fears. First off, Rainesford will discover his strengths versus his weaknesses.
Fear is the unpleasant feeling caused by the thought of being in danger possibly causing pain. There are many examples of fear. It can be seen as the close call with death, the hope to never be caught by another predator. Fear can also be a source for making the most wisest decisions, to stay alive, or to keep out of unnecessary trouble. Fear can be beaten, overcome with and can be conquered.
It is now hard for him to trust anyone after being forced to be hunted. “The pit grew deeper; when it was above his shoulders, he climbed out and from some hard saplings cut stakes and sharpened them to a fine point. These stakes he planted in the bottom of the pit with the points sticking up” (Connell 34) because of this flashback Rainsford starts to get scared about himself hurting another human being. He won’t hunt again because he remembers his times of desperation and how he felt while trying to kill a living person. Another factor of Rainsford’s nervousness is when he told that the man being hunted the day before lost his head.
We all have thing that we are afraid of. For some it might be snakes, spiders, height, or water. Yet, for others it might be something a little less rational that they don’t want to talk about. These fear usually come with a long story behind them and most likely it is something they can never get rid of. These fears may seem silly to you but to the people experiencing them their life is pure terror.
Even taking place on another secluded island with a different landscape would change the story. The setting allows Rainsford to endure the obstacles it holds. The story tells some of the obstacles, “He knew where he was now. Death Swamp and its quicksand” (76). The jungle-like terrain is allowing Rainsford to descend into more of an animalistic state.
- ‘Even so, I rather think they understand one thing--fear. The fear of pain and the fear of death. ’”(Connell 18) By reading the theme the reader can infer the position Rainsford is in will drastically change. Although, Rainsford is not overtaken by the jaguar
