Why Is John Proctor Justified In The Crucible

In the short play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller The character John Proctor also known as Goody Proctor is both a husband and father and a mild aged farmer in his thirties. He is the protagonist of Arthur Miller 's play. The play is set in the puritanical town of Salem and expectations of their cultural background which is Christianity. Proctor’s main motivation is to protect his wife and family after committing adultery to Abigail and to prove his wife not guilty of witchcraft. He isn’t overly religious but he is a stubborn outspoken man.

Everyone has a name, and some are willing to die to protect it. John Proctor was willing to die to keep his name clean of what he was being accused of. Elizabeth Proctor, or Goody Proctor, knew that her husband was a good man, and she wanted to support his choices. Goody Proctor thought that if she lied about what John had done that it would save his life, but he ended it on his own terms. John and Elizabeth Proctor had three sons and a baby on the way before John went to the noose.

The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 started from the English colonists who were mostly Puritans meaning they were very religious and believed in the supernatural and that the devil granted certain people with the powers to harm others, particularly to destroy christian communities. There had been smallpox outbreaks, a colonial war between Britain and France, a new charter, and other conflicts happening in the England colony and all of these events increased the colonists belief in witchcraft. Mostly older women were the ones who were convicted in court for being accused of witchcraft by anyone; neighbors, strangers, even some daughters would testify against their own mothers. The witch trials lasted from June to September in 1692, the governor released the convicted people from prison and declared the trials to be unlawful. They then created a law that spectral evidence was no longer allowed to be used in court(Salem).

The idea of witchcraft has plagued Salem, several girls including Tituba and Abigail have confessed to practicing witchcraft. Salem is relying on Abigail and her friends to tell the truth, they do not know that there is no thing as witchcraft. Proctor presents himself to the court to testify against Abigail, the court dose not listen because Danforth and the other court members are concerned with preserving the reputation of the court. These traits would make him out to be a righteous man to question the motives of those who accuse others of witchcraft. But his affair with the young Abigail Williams taints him because of the facts that he is hypocritical over the same sin he committed. However, in the end, John Proctor proves to be a good man with pure intentions...

In the beginning of the play all John Proctor cared about was his reputation. However, ultimately he sacrificed his reputation by telling the court he committed adultery. John telling the court he was guilty ruined his reputation, which made all hell break loose.

Ultimately, Proctor chooses to deny the accusations and dies a martyr. Proctor’s decision to sacrifice himself is justified because he protected the reputation of those who died and risked being arrested to save his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor’s death is justified because he was willing to sacrifice his life to protect the reputation of others.
