Books are an essential way to gain knowledge whether they are controversial or not. Thousands of books have been banned from public libraries and schools due to being deemed ‘inappropriate’ by parents, administrators, or religious leaders. Whether Americans should ban books in public libraries and schools is an often debated topic. This censorship of books is dangerous, as it restricts the American people's’ ability to access information, leaving Americans ignorant. Historically, banning books is not a new practice. For as long as writers have written books, people have been wanting to ban them. Before the printing press, only a few handwritten copies of each book existed. The book follows Guy Montag, a fireman who sets things on fire instead of put out fires. He enjoys his job until on one job an old woman decides to burn with her books rather than evacuate. Haunted by her death, Montag becomes confused on why books would mean so much to anyone. He then decides to find out for himself by reading books from a personal stash of stolen books. Montag has a personal revolution; he realizes the dangers of restricting information and intellectual thought. Ironically, Fahrenheit 451 is one of the most banned books in American schools. The book was seen as evil for ideas like opposing the suppression of freedom by parties that presumed they had all the answers. Books such as Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Brave New World, The Giver, and The Hunger Games have been banned in schools, and they all explore the themes of suppressing freedom, information, and intellectual thinking. In Montag’s society, they believe that books should be destroyed. In the society that Montag lives in, they turned the firemen into full time book burners. It even says in the text,”with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world. ”(Bradbury pg.3) What the text is saying, is that instead of the hose spraying water it is like a python spraying its deadly venom, which is kerosene.
Since this book has been written, it has been or at least attempted to be banned three times due to vulgar language, derogatory lines about Christianity, burning of the Bible, as well as other violent actions. Should Books be Banned, or Are They Worth Reading? Are people throwing away free speech when they ban a book? Banning books has become more of a regular thing day-by-day. Some say that by challenging and banning books makes one “soft”. There are many books with usage of profanity and slurs, and many people have accepted it as okay, but many find it as a disgrace.
One of the reasons why I chose to write about book banning is because of the book Fahrenheit 451. It has always been one of my favorites and the concept of not being able to gain knowledge from reading amazes me. Something that I have easy access to was completely denied to everyone in that society. I believe that there are arguable reasons as to why books should be banned and why they shouldn't, which is why I wanted to do further research on this topic.
In this future society, books are illegal to read and even have possession of them. Firefighters are the special forces in charge of destroying them. After Montag finds a book and falls in love with reading, he begins to steal books from their burning sites and hoard them in secret spots in his house.
The article that was used helps give a couple reasons why books are being banned in our society today. The article from (name of writer) “Various authorities have been banning and destroying books for practically as long as books have existed. ”This can show that there has always been a distrust for books ever since they were created, because most people always want a just and equal society in which no one person knows too much or too little. Relating back to the story the government wants their society to be equal and easily controlled, so they take away books. Have you ever read a banned book before? I recently read the banned book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Although the book was amazing, I can see why and also agree that Fahrenheit 451 should be censored for those not in high school. Overall, the book was cataclysmic as it contained several inappropriate and violent themes that would give people a concern to censor it.
In the 21st century, many books are challenged and banned for their content, some of these include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Animal Farm, and Fahrenheit 451. Many of the reasons given for banning are the same. The reasons include violence, language, symbols, and religion. This makes it very difficult for educational professionals; which books should be taught and which ones should be banned, when does protection become unnecessary censorship? Although Fahrenheit 451 shows some dark themes such as banning books, disregard for human life, and suicide, it should be included in the school curriculum because it shows the dystopian future that awaits the world if the events in the book become a reality.
To ban books or not is a rising question in America. Many authors such as Kelly Konrad and Ellen Ryan strongly believe that books should not be banned because they teach life lessons and limits freedom of speech. On the other hand, books like George Orwell’s Animal Farm have strong topics that may not suit some readers. Author Judith Krug emphasises that banning books can give people an equal opportunity. Some parents, students, and school board members think books are constantly being banned in educational facilities and libraries because of their explicit content and profanity; however; many of those same books teach important life lessons and represent freedom of speech.
The topic is if schools should ban books, well I kind of get why teachers and professors would want to get rid of books but think about the students you're taking away good books from them. Sure there might be things that might not be as suitable for the kids, but sometimes they're going to have to run into bad things in the books. I ran into a book and my mom didn't want me to read it, I didn't, so basically what i'm trying to say is their parents should handle what they read. The books should have labels that tell you the level it is and what the book is about on the back.

There are a lot of other better reasons though. Parents and other people ban books with the best interests in mind. They want to keep kids away from bad stuff. It is good to ban books because the ones that are banned have foul/bad language, are unsuitable for the age group it is designed for, and are very violent. There are a lot of other reasons too, but I did not want to talk about them.
