Was Beowulf an honorable hero? Absolutely! He was an honorable hero. In this essay I will tell the reason for his titled name. The reasons that will be explained includes: the actions he did, the type of person he was and what he believed him, and his relentless fighting efforts towards every monster/creature around. Honorable means bringing or worthy of honor which Beowulf show within my reasons. The first reason for Beowulf being honorable is his victories. Beowulf defeated a demon from hell without a weapon. Nobody in the village was capable of defeating the demon but Beowulf. After, he killed the mother who came to avenger her son. Keep in mind that these are demons, creatures from hell, trying to destroy anything in their way and Beowulf killed them. Killing …show more content…
Before every battle he attended, he prayed to God and after every victory, he thanked God. Beowulf was the type of person who didn’t want people to help him. He showed courageous character and was successful because of his beliefs. Beowulf knew that he couldn’t win any of his battles without the grace of God. The grace of God kept Beowulf strong and relentless when it came to battling. Beowulf was a titan when it came to fighting. He did everything in his will to win. When he fought it was like watching a lion walking through the forest. The pride he showed while fighting was outstanding. Fighting a battle or creature didn’t stop Beowulf from doing him. One after another, Beowulf relentless effort made him victorious which makes him an honorable man. All these reason explain why Beowulf was always an honorable man. There should be no doubt in mind that he wasn’t an honorable man. I wrote this essay to inform people of his heroic deeds and why he was he honorable. There are people who think he wasn’t honorable but will have to explain why he wasn’t and I don’t think that someone can explain why he wasn’t honorable better than I explained that he was
Comparing these two hero ethics’ that we see, contrast each other very well. Beowulf seems to have great morals that he lives by. Beowulf has much pride in himself and great loyalty to his country as a noble. He shows characteristic of a hero throughout the entire reading, but also boasts about himself and how wonderful his is. Beowulf never truly shows the strength of his own heart, only the quest to better him.
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
In the epic poem “Beowulf” the character Beowulf is the foundation for all of our modern heroes, but was he really a great hero? A hero is classified as a person who is admired for their bravery, achievements, or nobility. Although Beowulf displays all these qualities, there are several reasons he is not a hero, mainly him being egotistical and arrogant. This is why Beowulf is not a heroic person. Beowulf is often caught bragging about himself and his great accomplishments.
Beowulf possessed the poised demeanor necessary to defeat all evils by the arrogant swing of his sword. The commitment shown by lending his life to the welfare of his people was imperative in order to be called a flawless warrior. Beowulf embodied the determination that Anglo-Saxons saw as unmeasurably valuable. If nothing more than just fiction, Beowulf is the ideal hero of the people from who he originated. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.”
So BeoWulf always defeated all the monsters on his own. BeoWulf was always balanced out, other than the fact that he had to travel multiple times in and out. He would either travel to The Land of Dane or his home or inside the city to find or defeat a monster. BeoWulf always lived in the moment and nothing feared him. Nothing; and I mean nothing because he was a brave and fierce warrior.
Questions of Honor: Beowulf Beowulf’s honor and integrity can be questioned throughout the entirety of the epic poem, Beowulf. Whether or not his actions are inspired by his own pompous arrogance or confidence, one can argue that he is a hero nonetheless. Evidence and experience prove that Beowulf is more of a fearless hero than an excessively prideful man, and his hubris is more than justified due to the formidable duties he is able to execute. Throughout the poem, Beowulf expresses his intense strength and courage to the fearful people in the poem. His daring sense of self-assurance is backed by his victories against all three monsters, (even though he suffers a tragic death after facing the dragon, it is a defeat nonetheless).
Beowulf is only thinking about himself. Performing these acts alone just to get the fame forms the quality of selfishness in Beowulf. Beowulf is putting all of his strength to be credited as a hero, but he displays acts of selfishness which marks him as an insignificant
Beowulf risked his life multiple times by battling Grendel and Grendel’s mother to save the people of Denmark. He also embarks on a battle with a dragon as an old man ascending on the Geats Throne. Each battle Beowulf fought has all been for the safety of his people. Although the Knight did not battle as a deed for his people, he also is viewed as a humble person his battles were for a purpose greater than himself. The knight never talks about his brave and valorous deeds.
With the battle to protect the city against the dragon, even though Beowulf was king he fought the dragon. He fought the dragon because no one else could. No one was as selfless as he was to risk his life to protect the city. Without Beowulf these monsters would over power good and there would be no balance between good and evil.
But he knew the greatest threat came knocking at his door for a fight that will live on being told for eternity. Beowulf sacrificed his own life for those around him, “Quickly, the dragon cam at him, encouraged as Beowulf as Beowulf fell back; its breath fared, and he suffered, wrapped around in swirling flames- a king, before, but now a Beaton warrior” (lines 687-691). In the end Beowulf fought till the end fighting not only for himself but for his people. He fought like a king until his death. Beowulf gave the ultimate sacrifice to save his people.
She swarmed the land, enraged by the death of her son. Beowulf the fearless warrior he is could not withstand this
Beowulf presents his warrior ethics when he states, 'the man who name was known for courage, the Geat leader, resolute in his helmet, answered in return: "[they] are retainers from Hygelac's band. Beowulf is [his] name"' (340-343). When he is presenting himself, he is boasting about his reputation which he has created from all of his accomplishment. It hints that he has created this reputation to create a
Beowulf went through so much to prove he was worthy enough to protect their kingdom and defeat Grendel. The story Beowulf was a great story to read and a great movie to watch; however, the battles were very eye catching and had a lot of extravagant and heroic doings of Beowulf. The first scenario that I’m going to discuss in the movie and story of Beowulf is The Battle with Grendel. In the movie Grendel attacked Beowulf in the Heriot while everyone was dancing and singing.
Throughout the Epic poem of Beowulf, Beowulf shows his honor and his strength in each of the three battles that takes place. In each battle, a different technique is used which shows that Beowulf is a strong man and he is someone who is not to be messed with. Beowulf proves his loyalty to Hrothgar by helping protect his people against Grendel and Grendel’s mother. This says more about Beowulf’s character than anything else that happens in the epic.
He exemplifies his honor in this quote by showing his respect for his opponent and making the battle fair for Grendel. An additional example of Beowulf’s honor is when his king, Hygelac dies and he is offered the throne, “Beowulf does not hurry and seize the throne, but rather supports Denmark’s rightful heir,” (Michael Stitt), Heardred, this action shows Beowulf’s respect for the throne and how he would not cheat someone out of what they deserve. Beowulf eventually comes to power and receives the throne. While he is ruling a ferocious dragon comes to his kingdom and starts to destroy it. Beowulf, “as a king should therefore act for the good of his people,” (Michael Stitt) and protect them from the dragon, even if it means losing his own life.
