Old plays written in ancient Greek theatres can relate to todays world. Plays such as “Antigone” show us how they used to live and how we can improve our lives based off theirs. In “Antigone” pride and power are major themes throughout the play and although the play is old it still relates to modern audiences. One major theme in “Antigone” is pride. Pride is revealed in many characters throughout “Antigone”. Creon is the one most people see as prideful. Creon shows his pride throughout the play, but it is first seen when he gives his first decree. His pride is shown when Antigone is brought to him and he showed no sympathy for her. It goes on to when Haimon speaks with Creon and he is too proud to change his mind even when his son is asking him to. Antigone’s pride is shown when she is talking with her sister about burying Polonaises. She states “Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way”(Prologue 36 ). This statement proves she does what she wants no matter the consequences. She also shows her pride when Creon is asking her why she buried her brother. Antigone states “No, Ismene. Questions like what country and or individual has the most power in today’s society. Only in “Antigone” power is given to one man, Creon. A man having that much power should have someone to check him. Only he does not listen to anyone, which makes him think he is invincible. In today’s society, governments have laws that limit the power one person can have. What is power? Merriam Webster dictionary describes power as the ability or right to control people or things and or political control of a country or area. Creon has both control of an area and the rights of the people. All that power can make a person feel unstoppable. So most governments of today’s world only give limited power to the leader.
