Why Do Words Have Power In Animal Farm

Literary devices have been used countless times by authors when writing stories. George Orwell’s Animal Farm, incorporates a plethora of literary devices which support themes and other important aspects of the story. Orwell uses diction, characterization, tone, and imagery which all make the story the classic it is. There are many examples of diction in Animal Farm which develop the story. Throughout the story, Napoleon is given a couple of different titles.

In the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, the horse, Boxer, was a complex character. He behaved in a loyal manner when interacting with the farm’s leader, Napoleon. Boxer contributes to the farm by being extremely hardworking. He was also one of the most committed of all the animals.

He was always hardworking and very loyal animalism and worked his hardest to make animal farm better. Boxer had always taken pride in his work, he woke up earlier than any other animal and was always the last to go to bed and despite his declining health from old age and an injury from his brave contributions to the animal

Boxer one of the horses on the animal farm worships Napoleon and sets good examples for the other animals by working hard and being a good leader. Boxer represents the labor of the working class from the revolutionary war. Boxer contributes to a good leader in many ways such as when Napoleon is mean and does wrong Boxer is still on his side. When harsh weather conditions would strike Boxer would still be determined to get work done.

Even though Boxer is one of the least intelligent animals on the farm, he has the most morality. Beginning from this action, Boxer develops into the purest character in the story. After reading the entire story, this short sentiment impacted me more than anything else. Boxer is the physically strongest farm animal, but he only wants to use his strength to help the animals, not to kill. Even though Boxer is more than capable of killing most people, he values all life and refuses to kill again.

Who is most like Boxer? “I will always work harder”, this is not the mentality most people have, that 's why a fictional character in a book said it (Orwell 12). Although the character/horse named Boxer is unrealistic, the situation seems to have happened with a similar character. First, a similar character is visible during the Russian Revolution, a person during fighting against segregation, and now. Behind a great leader, there will always be the loyal follower who will do as they say no matter how crazy it sounds or how much effort and work it takes.

After Snowball had finished his speech about the windmill, napoleon had called for his dogs with a “high pitched whimper,” to chase Snowball off the farm. The dogs created fear in all of the animals, making it easy for Napoleon to take over the leadership of Animal Farm. The dogs were the puppies that Napoleon had taken away from their mothers and “reared privately,” implying that Napoleon had intended to control the dogs for his own bodyguards from the beginning. The dogs would also prevent rebellion against Napoleon by letting out “menacing,” growls every time an animal would question Napoleon’s authority any further. Though later in the chapter, Napoleon orders his dogs to slaughter any of the animals who had previously questioned his authority on Animal Farm.

Boxer was the first animal to wake up and the last animal to sleep. He worked day and night restlessly under the guidance of Napoleon. He was the greatest supporter of animal farm and Animalism, the ideology that runs the animal farm. However, he had to sacrifice his own animal right for the sake of animal farm and the better life of all of us. Also, he was loyal retainer of Napoleon.

Other animals knew him for his hard working labour he just does his own thing. A quote from the book is “he is dead” said boxer sorrowfully. ” I had no intention of doing that. I forgot i was wearing iron shoes who will believe me that i didn’t do it on purpose. This quote is telling us that nobody will ever believe that he didn’t mean to kill the kid on purpose just cause he’s an animal.

“It is not wisdom but authority that makes a low.” Thomas Hobbes’ quote reveals that the world is all about authority and how powerful people are. In other words, to be able to rule, wisdom is not essential. However, authority is crucial. This quote relates to George Orwell’s Animal Farm as it represents the theme of power by the pigs that use propaganda, intimidation and false informations to take over the farm and to control the animals.

With the power of words, people can efficiently persuade listeners to agree with their side or position. In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, different characters use the power of words to create persuasive speeches to effectively lure the audience to their side. Words are so powerful that they can have effects such as changing our perception of someone or persuading us to do something we never thought about. In Animal Farm, Major uses the power of words to ultimately start a massive rebellion that changes the whole condition of the farm, while Squealer convinces the animals to believe in a lot of false information. Even though Major has only one speech in the book, he proves that words can be so inspiring that they can start a revolution.

This quote can be applied to a majority of events and media, but is most present in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm is a book about animals holding a revolution against their farmer and creating their own farm. However things take a turn for the worst when their dream society of justice and equality turns into a hellish totalitarianism. The pigs take over and the animals are stuck wondering how it happened.
