The South seceded from the Union in 1860 when Abraham Lincoln’s presidency rose. South Carolina was the first state to secede with others that followed to create the Confederacy. States with a higher percentage of the state’s population that had slaves left earlier and states geographically farther from the Union seceded earlier as well. The Confederacy believed in the power of leaving the Union since they voluntarily joined the Union. The South was afraid that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery once he was president so left quickly. After the secession of the southern states, the Confederacy began the Civil War, a four year battle for the United States. The North thought they were easily going to win due to the high population and resources …show more content…
After many battles, the Confederacy had a major lead. In the end, the North won due to many advantages. The North had supplies, a large population for a military, a turn at the Battle of Gettysburg, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Sherman’s March. First, the North won the war due to the amount of factories in the North which created a powerful Ironclad. This led the North to an advantage of many resources built with the amount of workers willingly working to support the war. The North now felt confident to take a strong lead on the South after many losses. The amount of goods produced helped the war in many ways, such as medical needs and weapons for fighting. The North had many advantages that led to major destruction but did not end the war as quickly. To begin, a shows in a chart, is a comparison of the resources in the North and South. The chart shows how there is 110,000 factories in the North and only 18,000 in the South. It also shows the value of good produced is 1,345,000,000 more in the North than the South. This shows the importance of the many supplies the North had. The North could win the war because of the many more supplies made in factories. The …show more content…
The North falled behind towards the beginning of the war due to the powerful men fighting for the Confederacy. The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point for the Union when Lee went on the offensive. The number of soldiers that were in the battle for the Union was significantly higher than the Confederacy. The document states, “At the beginning of the war the Northern states had a combined population of 22 million people. The Southern states had a combined population of about 9 million.” This helps the Union win the war due to the amount of soldiers that doubled the size of the Confederacy army. The more the Soldiers would help the battles quicken because of the many to help preserve the Union. The more men willing to fight would reduce the significant amount killed each battle. Having a larger group of soldiers trained would increase the power and motivation to fight. Since there was many soldiers willing to fight and preserve the union, the Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point for the North. The North had the advantage not only due to the amount of soldiers fighting but the strategies that Major General George Gordon Meade helped invade. A document from the Nps.gov states, “The Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg, sometimes referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion" resulted not only in Lee's retreat to Virginia, but an end to the hopes of the Confederate States
The Union army were aware of their cause of fighting “for each other” to restore equality and union among the people (Shaara 30). This strengthened the army’s desire to win while some of the Rebels were merely fighting for “some rights [they] didn’t know nothin’ about”(Shaara 171). Therefore, the Union had a greater sense of cause towards winning and held more spirit. The northern army wanted the south to surrender or retreat from Gettysburg, they did not push forward when the Rebels pulled back and instead held their position until it was determined that they were the victors. By doing so, they did not risk losing the battle by pushing for a total win because they knew that they had dealt a crushing blow to the south and that was enough.
The North had many advantages one of these was Abraham Lincoln, the north also had a larger population, and a large advantage at 5-to-two in military power. Not only were they large in population the Union was also very wealthy and controlled shipping. The North also had industrial power, more railroads, and more land. As you can see the United States had many more advantages than the Rebels, but they also have quite a few disadvantages. One disadvantage was that the Northern armies had little motivation because they weren't fighting for a cause.
The North’s economy was booming due to factories. The North had twice as much soldiers as the Confederates. Many were colored people who were willing to fight for rights. The South were outnumbered but the soldiers were willing to fight for slavery because many thought the South would lose all of its power and collapse because without slaves, no work could be done to help agriculture.
15.1 What material advantages did the North enjoy as the war began? In most every solid metric, the North had the advantage as war began. They had more railroad miles, more telegraph lines, greater population, greater food production, more ships, and so on. They also had a firm mandate in terms of Lincoln’s resolution to preserve the Union at all costs.
The North and South War On April 12, 1861 the Civil War began with the North and South . The North was known as the Union because southerners were pro linconist. The South was known as the Confederacy because some southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America. Both the North and South had advantages during the war.
Though the North did not treat many of these former slaves very well, they still gained the tactical advantage by adapting and letting those former slaves be better equipped fight. All of these factors combined are what helped to win the war in the
The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
Chapter 21 Questions 1. The North won the Civil War because they were much better off than the South. They had a lot of great resources; they had more money and more people. The South did not have any of these resources. The one thing that they had to rely on was their cotton.
At the beginning of the Civil War, the Union’s advantages of a greater population and better industrial economy was perceived as though they were on a level far above that of the Confederacy. Though the Union did have the upper hand in those elements, the Confederacy had better trained officers who harnessed superior decision-making skills and battle tactics. While the North held distinct advantages economically, their one glaring deficiency was in its military. When the war began, the Union held 23 states totaling a population of 22 million, while the Confederacy held only 9 states with a population of 9 million, and approximately 4 million of them were slaves. The Union armies outnumbered Confederate armies by a ratio of 2-to-1, roughly.
The North tended to rely on brute force, and the ability to simply replace their casualties with more men. If the South was given this type of resource, it would have been a different war with different results. Through the use of brilliant documents, the North gained support from both citizens and border states and changed the emphasis of the war from preserving the union, to the issue of slavery, which people felt strongly about. The separate countries would not survive as well and as easily than if they remained unified. They worked off one another, economically, with the South providing the raw materials and the North providing the finished goods.
I think that the greatest advantage that the north had was the numbers and the industrialization. If the south had the same access to the industrialization that the north had as well as the amount of people then I that there could have been a different outcome to the war. The south knew the topography and the weather conditions of the land where the battles were being fought. If they were able to employ the same type of force like the north had they would have had a better chance at winning the war. But since they did not see the point in taking the industrialization as serious as the north did since they were making such good profits from agriculture in my opinion they did not have a good chance at winning the war from the
The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 with a victory for the North. What were the reasons the South lost the war? War is not just fought on the battlefield and that is a big reason the South lost the Civil War. The South was disadvantaged in a lot of ways including economically, demographically, politically and Geographically. The South had a lack of human resources, and lagged behind in technology and education.
The Civil War, a cause not only for the end of slavery, but to bring back the Confederacy as well. Many thought that simply because the North had a clear advantage over the South, such as population or weaponry, the war would end quickly, people picnicked on the first battles of war, watching the battles, but they didn’t fully realize how deadly new weapons had evolved. A single shot could easily kill anyone within range. People soon found how effective technology had become, and how well the South could fight back. Throughout the earlier years of the war the Confederates won nearly all their major battles, such as the very first battle at Fort Sumter, or the following one at Bull Run.
You’ve probably heard of the Civil War of 1861 when the Union fought against the Confederacy of the South. Both sides fought their hardest, but only one can win a war. In my paper I’ll tell you about the Confederate side, what they thought, and what they did down in the South. The Confederate Nation was formed on February 8, 1861. They formed the Confederacy so they could maintain their views on slavery, state rights, and white privileges.
The North had many advantages over the South the helped them win the civil war. These reasons included a central leadership, more resources, and recruiting black men for their armies. These reasons helped the North win the civil war and play a big part in how successful they would be. With having advantages, better tactics when fighting, and also a higher population, the North would use strategic planning to fight the South and ultimately win the civil war.
