Nullification was a controversial constitutional theory started by John C. Calhoun. He came up with the idea because he believed the tariff of 1816 was responsible for fall of South Carolinas economy. When in fact it was the exhausted farm land in the state which had caused the downfall. With his future political dreams resting on how he met this challenge in his home state he developed the theory of nullification. The theory stated that a state can suspend, within its boundaries, a federal law that was thought to be unconstitutional. It was also a factor contributing to the civil war to come in 1861. Calhoun got his ideas from Madison, Jefferson and the tenth amendment of the constitution. He argued that “since the federal government was a creation of that states-not the courts or congress- were the final arbiters of the constitutionality of the federal laws” (Brinkley 206). He then stated that “If a state concluded that congress had passed an unconstitutional law, then it could hold a special …show more content…
He soon became a member of both the official cabinet and the “kitchen cabinet” (president’s unofficial circle of political allies). His influence grew stronger with the quarrel between Jackson and Calhoun. Peggy O’Neale was the attractive daughter of a Washington tavern keeper whom Jackson and John H. Eaton took stay at while they were senators for Tennessee. There had been rumors going around that Peggy and Eaton were having an affair. Soon after Peggy’s husband died she and Eaton were married. Jackson then made Eaton secretary of war and named Mrs. Eaton a cabinet wife, but all the other cabinet wife’s disapproved of her. They were led by Mrs. Calhoun who refused to let Mrs. Eaton join their social world, but Van Buren befriended the Eaton’s, wedging himself to Jackson who in the end chose him to succeed with him in the white house ending Calhoun’s chance of
Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s Significance During the Civil War Mostar, Alexandrea Mountain View High School Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was a highly skilled military tactician. He earned his name from “the epic battle of First Manassas, where he and his brigade earned him the title “Stonewall” (para. 3) according to the Civil War Trust biography on Jackson. It was given to him when a fellow general compared Jackson to a stonewall in order to inspire his own men, he shouted “Look, men! There is Jackson standing like a stone wall” (para. 2). This nickname itself shows how clear headed Jackson must have been in order to be so clear and decisive in the face of the enemy.
Vice President John Calhoun’s wife led the other wives in snubbing the Eatons at social gatherings. The wives thought of Peggy as too flirtatious and too outlandish mostly because she didn’t wait the expected amount of time until remarriage. Because Andrew Jackson’s wife, Rachel Jackson, wasn’t legally divorced to her former husband before remarrying to Jackson, he was furious when Peggy was treated the same and demanded everyone treat her as an equal. The wives were flustered with Jackson’s demands and forced their husbands to resign from office, including Eaton and Van Buren. The mass resignations led Jackson to form a “Kitchen Cabinet” filled with immoral advisors.

John Caldwell Calhoun was a politician from South Carolina. Calhoun was a candidate for the president in 1824, but he dropped out of the race and became the seventh United States Vice President from 1825-1832 under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. The significance of Calhoun was that he had a major role in the breaking up of the South and the North. Calhoun also was known for starting the Civil War. Calhoun is also remembered for defending slavery, he was one of the leading voices to secure the institution of slavery.
Wendell Phillips was an individual who was hungry for change. When Phillips passionately delivered a speech condemning a mob action against another abolitionist, he was thought of as one of the most brilliant orators of his day. With his eloquence and pure determination, this crusader helped give rise to the antislavery movement that lead to the American Civil War. Phillips’ treacherous journey began on November 29, 1811 in Boston. He was born into a loving and nurturing family.
The founding father’s idea when they created the Constitution was to prevent a centralized government. As expressed by James Madison in Federalist No. 51, they believe that the power surrendered by people would be divided between the federal and state governments, creating balance of power that would enable both governments to control each other. Over time, the balance of power between the federal and state governments has shifted in favor of the federal government and this has taken place with the help of the Constitution and by enactments of Congress. The role that Chief Justice John Marshall played in defining the power of the federal and state governments during the early 19th century is important to mention because he shaped the nation.
The Nullification Crisis was an event that happened between the years of 1828 and 1832. There were many reasons that this crisis occurred. Many of these reasons could have been avoided from happening. The event that really started it all was the Tariff of 1828. One of the tariffs done during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, it was tax on goods that were imported and sold.
Webster argued that from the beginning the Revolution had been a crusade of the united colonies rather than of each separately. True sovereignty, he stated, resided in the people as a whole for whom both state and federal governments acted as agents in the people's behalf. Haynes agreed with Calhoun and thought that states could nullify laws but Webster argued that it would lead to a civil war. Andrew Jackson, a slave owner and a southerner, was president while Calhoun was vice president. Jackson supported the Union and didn’t agree with the nullification.
According to Thomas P. Abernethy, Jackson was “a frontier nabob who took sides against the democratic movement in his own state…an opportunist for whom democracy was good talk with which to win the favor of the people and thereby accomplish ulterior objectives.” Different views of Jackson continued the debate about who he really was as a leader. It was not until historian Arthur Schlesinger, took a different look at the study of Jackson. He believed that Jackson’s presidency was designed to suppress the power of capitalists, and try to help those of the lower classes. Other historians continued to disagree with Schlesinger, while others supported his idea or enhanced it, saying Jackson was almost similar to a Marxist.
The Age of Jackson was a significant time in history that occurred before, during, and after Andrew Jackson’s elected presidency. From 1820-1850, America had a rise in Democracy. Although known as the worst president to be on a United States currency, most, but not all things were because of Jackson. Events prior to his election in office led up to how he ran the United States during his presidency.
He beat the woolen Bill for raising tariff, He got elected Vice President of the United States . Calhoun left office from Vice-President on July 16. John defends slavery as a "Positive good' which meant it was a good idea. He assisted the van Buren independent
Additionally, he also played a significant role in emphasizing on issues that are in regards to equality, democracy, and liberty. He also plainly rejected some of the founding principles of equality that are found in the Declaration of Independence (Calhoun 626). In this case, he denied the acclaimed fact that humanity is born free and equal in human nature and basic needs. Calhoun claimed that states had the ability to take action to free themselves from their governments. His stance understood that the concurrent majority and interest groups have the capacity to influence their legislative bodies.
Because of these infringements on the rights of the people, Andrew Jackson was not a champion of the common man; the nickname “King Andrew,” from his opponents was accurate. When he was elected president, Andrew Jackson felt that he needed to remove John Quincy Adams’ appointees from office. To him, the clear answer was to replace them with his own followers and friends, creating a government where only one political party was effectively represented by presidential appointments. This use of the spoils system put people who were not qualified in powerful positions simply as a reward for supporting Jackson. He also had thirteen unofficial members in his cabinet to advise him.
“The policy of this country ought to be…to nationalize our country, so that we shall love our country,” states Senator John Sherman in Document B. Throughout the years of 1860-1876, several events occurred, that were said to have “amounted in a revolution” over time. Complete succession of South Carolina from the Union in December of 1860 led a trail of states to leave over the course of time, leading to issues for the Union. Equal rights and privileges, and power of the federal government became topics that most often created enormous debates in these chaotic 17 years. The United States had a lack of nationality and obviously there was lack of unity. All of this chaos built up and effected the way America was managed.
The Ohio Bank v United States of America case is an example of the nullification attempt by Ohio where state government denied to accept the decision formed in case of McCullouch v Maryland case and so, Ohio took $100,000 from national bank of America but later the Supreme Court held the Ohio’s tax and said it is unconstitutional and case was closed after controversies. The South Carolina case for nullification is another example of the nullification where the nullification of the law was proved right and the new legislation was passed for south Carolina state for the no tariff and the federal law was not applicable for that state for that particular law. The northern states were developing through industrialization but the agricultural region of southern states were not and imposing import tariffs would help industries to produce their own goods but for southern states the raw material import cost also increased and so it directly effects the southern states. So, a lot of southern states demanded for nullification of law and the law was amended for southern
