During the late 19th century, there was a growth in industrialization. This brought new opportunities for the poor and the rich. For example, Carnegie helped build the steel industry in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, which made him one of the richest man in the world. As Carnegie gained more wealth, he questioned who money should be given to. Carnegie was both a Robber Baron and a Captain of Industry. A Captain of Industry is used to describe a successful businessman. Carnegie created an efficient steel industry. He did this by, converting iron into steel and built a new steel plant for his company called, Carnegie Steel Company. These men were captains of industry because they all donated money. One way Rockefeller bestowed a portion of his money away was by giving “millions of dollars to a variety of causes.” In the reading it quotes, “In 1919 Rockefeller donated $50,000,000 to the Board to raise academic Salaries.” This quote demonstrates that John D. Rockefeller was not an awful guy and cared for other people. In addition, it later says in the reading it that he also donated money for religion and medical purposes.

Carnegie cut the wages of his workers to donate money elsewhere. In document D, there are two images of Carnegie, one is giving a wage cut notice to the workers and the other is giving a check to Scotland and donating a library to Pittsburg. Carnegie’s employees were working hard and trying to survive in a tough economy, their wages did not deserve a cut.

Carnegie ran his company without any concerns pertaining to his workers. They worked long hours with very low wages and high risk of injury. Their work days were often 12 to 14 hours, for which they earned about ten dollars a week.
Andrew Carnegie was born in a small town of dunfermline, Scotland. He grew up in a average family. Andrew was a very hard worker because at the age of 12 he got his first job as a bobbin boy and he made $1.20 a week. After only a couple months after he moved to the country he saw himself moving up in the world. He got a job at the factory shortly after his first job and the factory paid him nearly double what he made before.

History Paper The Industrial Revolution brought radical change to the United States in what is now called the Gilded Age. As the country transitioned from an agricultural based economy to a industry based economy, the richest men in American history were crowned. The legacy of these men, now deemed robber barons by some, and captains of industry by others, have shaped America forever. One of the most prominent figures of the time, Andrew Carnegie, pushed America forward, and made amazingly generous charitable contributions, but the scandals regarding the treatment of his employees will forever tarnish his legacy.
