Hitchcock films are most often thrillers, pegged as such because of their suspense, psychologically complex characters, and twist endings. In a career spanning six decades he directed over fifty feature films.

A film auteur is usually a writer and a director who use unique and personal styles in their films, so when someone was to watch another film of that person they will instantly refer to that filmmaker. Alfred Hitchcock is a perfect example of this because of several reasons.

Firstly, the music which Hitchcock uses is very dark and dramatic, creating an overall creepy and suspenseful mood and atmosphere. This is prominent in many of his films due to the fact that Bernard Herman wrote the music for Psycho, North by Northwest and Vertigo.

All of his films feature typical American characters and families living very ordinary, mundane lives in suburbia… until things are turned upside down, these protagonists are always under investigation. This characterization makes Hitchcock’s films very recognizable.

A Style which he likes to employ is the way he allows the camera to take on human qualities so the audience feel as if they are uncovering the true story and allowing them to interact and solve the mysteries within the story. He also likes to fill in scenes with no dialogue, with a point of view shot so that the audience can see what the character is seeing.

He values fairness and love, with the themes of punishment and being wrongfully accused, as well as the role of the parent being frequently discussed throughout his films. This is due to his strained relationship with his mother and father during his childhood. Where, he was often wrongfully blamed and punished by them.
