In chapter 18 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella Ewell is on the stand in the Tom Robinson versus Mayella Ewell case. Atticus begins by asking Mayella about the night of the supposed rape, but is shut down by the fearful cries of Mayella, who claims Atticus is scaring her. Eventually, Mayella responds with her side of the story, claiming Tom Robinson attacked and took advantage of her until the details became hazy and she passed out. Next thing she knew, Bob Ewell was standing over her asking who had done it. The story, however, did not match that of her father’s, when it came to him witnessing the rape. Claiming he wants to get acquainted with Mayella, Atticus begins asking her more personal questions. When Atticus speaks properly to
During the trial, Tom Robinson revealed that Mayella’s father verbally and sexually abuses her. Tom states “She says she never kissed a grown man before. She says what her papa do to her don’t count.” (Doc. B) After Mr. Ewell caught Tom and Mayella, he called Mayella a “goddamn whore” and threatens her by saying “I’ll kill ya.” (Doc. B)
The fear of her father and her nervousness clouded her judgement and, seemingly, she desired the jury’s pity. Mayella addressed Atticus, saying, “Won’t answer a word you say long as you keep on mockin’ me.” At Atticus’ puzzled expression, “Mayella looked from under lowered eyelids at Atticus, but she said to the judge: “Long’s he keeps on callin’ me ma’am and sayin’ Miss Mayella. I don’t hafta take his sass, I ain’t called upon to take it” (207). Bob Ewell’s oldest daughter knew exactly what had happened between herself and Tom Robinson, and essentially, she was completely aware that Atticus might be able to wheedle the truth from her.
In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words.
Along with that Mayella has been given many chances to call out her father for his wrongdoing. She needs to protect herself and Atticus has been asking her multiple questions to help her. “You seem sure enough that he choked you. All this time you were fighting back, remember? You kicked and hollard as loud as you could,
Preston Geerinck Per. 1 4/25/17 Mrs. Granahan-Smith Speech Analysis Atticus Finch of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird tackled the task of defending the case of Tom Robinson who was accused of raping Mayella Ewell.
The Mistreatment of Tom Robinson Tom Robinson was a falsy accused man, all because of the community's biased opinion. Tom Robinson’s court case was shown in the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Tom Robinson, was accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell. Since the town of Maycomb thinks all African Americans are harmful, it is nearly impossible for him to win this court case. Even though the evidence did not line up to where it could not possibly be Tom, he still lost.
In “To Kill a Mockingbird” the town Maycomb, Alabama takes place during the 1930’s, and is described as a quiet, calm, small town. Everything soon changes in the town once an african american is being accused of raping a white woman. Mayella Ewell is a white nineteen year old young lady who lives with an abusive and alcoholic father. Mayella does chores and takes care of her siblings every day, she hardly goes out. She plants red geraniums outside her yard which keeps her calm, and people have often noticed that it is the only nice thing around the Ewell’s house.
After the so-called “rape”, Bob Ewell neglected to call a doctor, which leads you to infer that Tom Robinson did not hurt Mayella Ewell, but her father did. Mayella had a bruise on her right eye which implies that someone that is left handed had hit her. Atticus asked Bob Ewell to write his name to see which hand he wrote with and he used his left hand, which leads you to believe Mayella gets abused by her father. That is another reason to feel compassionate towards Mayella. Mayella had not been treated like a lady before, up until
Mayella has a poor family background and she is extremely poor, giving her lack of power because of her class. The people of Maycomb think she lives “among pigs” and after the trial, Mr.Ewell [Mayella’s Father]was told to “get back to their dump” meaning her as well in (DOC A,E). When Atticus called her “ma’am” Mayella thought she was making fun of but she has been so powerless she doesn’t realize that being called” ma’am” is a respect towards her in (DOC C).
He is accused of rape by Bob and Mayella Ewell. During the trial Atticus Finch agrees to be Robinson's lawyer. The accusation was false and Mayella Ewell had kissed Tom butcher then realized, in the words of Atticus, “She did something that in our society is unspeakable.” Mayella could have potentially even been in love with Tom as he helped her with lots of things out of the kindness of his heart. As soon as she realized and her father saw her, she completely changed because what she was doing was not normal amongst the people of the town.
Ewell takes a stand to defend Mayella in the courtroom when Atticus starts to realize that Mr. Ewell could’ve been guilty for Mayella’s rape. Atticus tries to prove that Mr. Ewell is guilty by intentionally asking Mayella questions, but Mayella refuses to prove that Mr. Ewell is guilty and responds to this saying “I got somethin’ to say an’ then I ain’t gonna say no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me.. “ (Lee 251). This quote symbolizes the judgement that Mayella made on Tom Robinson to prove that he’s guilty.
“Just remember that sometimes, the way you think about a person isn’t the way they actually are.” Society shapes and influences Mayella Ewells, Victoria Price, and Ruby Bates. Mayella, Victoria, and Ruby are viewed as both victims and accusers during and after their trials. Some people viewed Mayella Ewells and Ruby Bates as victims but some people do not.
I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 259. In this part of the book the trial begins and Mayella and Tom testify. Mayella lies about how Tom hurts her. Atticus knows that Mayella is lying and that Tom would not hurt a white woman. Unfortunatley, Mayella wins the trial and Tom is accused of raping Mayella.
In “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee, thru live in a little town called Maycomb, which is located in Southern Alabama. Maycomb was a little peaceful town, untill something happened. Mayella Ewell changed all of that. Mayella thought she was in control, but she was in fact actually being controlled. Mayella does not have control in “To Kill A Mockingbird”, her father Bob Ewell abuses her.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the character Mayella Ewell is a victim of rape that never happened, which is similar to the Scottsboro trials of Victoria Price.
