The Army of the Potomac went through a series of command changes throughout the Civil War (Johnson, 150). Lincoln replaced generals of the Army of the Potomac a lot throughout the war; Lincoln appointed aggressive generals, such as McClellan, Pope, Burnside, Hooker, and Meade, to ensure the Union’s military victories and quickly end the war (Johnson, 149). In 1863, Lincoln appointed General George G. Meade as commander of the Army of the Potomac (Johnson, 151). In a letter to Meade, Lincoln stated, “I do not believe you appreciate the magnitude of the misfortune involved in Lee’s escape. He was within your easy grasp, and to have closed upon him would…have ended the war” (Johnson, 155).

Lastly Throughout the Civil War General Grant had drive even when they were losing he still was determined to win. Now I am going to talk about how Grant received the job as being the general of the Union. Grant was chosen by Lincoln to lead the Union Army into battle against the Confederates. Grants path to greatness wasn’t always easy for a period of around 7 years he struggled to find a job to support his family.

Once the Emancipation Proclamation was accepted Lincoln decided to allow African Americans to join the Union Army. This decision ultimately helped the Union in winning the Civil War. When the African Americans were accepted in the Union Army they were put to do labor for the Union and later they were given the opportunity to go fight for their country

Braggs plan was to attack the Confederates right side of troops and begin toward the south to get Union troops away from Chattanooga. Union reinforcements began to help and pushed back the Southerners, even though Confederates were still attacking. Union soldiers stayed alive, bloodily and protected the rest from attacks by Polk’s troops. Mid-day of September 20, Rosecrans assumed that Union troops created a divide and moved the Confederates out of position.
