Diego Adame-Lopez Jasmin Garcia English 12 Honors 03 March 2023 The Future is in your Hands “ Your future hasn't been written yet. No one has. Your future is whatever you make it.” (Dr. Emmett Brown) Macbeth shaped his destiny; he didn't need anyone's help to become the man he became. William Shakespeare wrote Macbeth, which is about an ambitious general who becomes greedy when three witches predict his destiny; everything that happens in this story stems from these prophecies. In what ways does Macbeth try to control the future and bury the past? He tries to control the future by listening to no one but himself. He attempts to bury the past by disregarding what he has done and convincing himself that he is correct. He tries everything he can to rid himself of the witches' forecasts. He dispatches assassins to kill Banquo and his son as soon as he recalls the prophecy that Banquo will be greater than him. When the three witches reveal their final prophecies, he feels safe. Macbeth's murder of the king exemplifies his attempt to …show more content…
In those days, kings would murder even their own families to maintain their position of authority. Macbeth gives the command to kill his best buddy. Why? Since the witches foretold that his sons would rule as kings. Another instance of Macbeth seeking to influence the future is his effort to kill Macduff after hearing the second round of witches' prophecies. When Macduff decided to work with his enemies, Macbeth was furious and used his authority to change his fate. Given his absolute drive to exterminate everyone if they dared contest his claim to the throne, I think Macbeth did everything in his ability to ensure that he would remain in power. Macbeth was unable to influence the future, hence he was unable to accomplish his
The prediction also leads to his notion that he killed King Duncan for Banquo’s sons. As a result, the witches’ prophecy compels Macbeth to hire murderers to kill Banquo and
For instance, he commits multiple murders after he gets the title of King. The murder of his own friend Banquo, the attempted murder of Banquo's son Fleance, and the murder of Macduff's family all were committed to fueling his growing obsession with maintaining his status and power. Nearing the end of the play, his determination completely takes over him and leads to his downfall. The witches give Macbeth more insight near the end of the play, communicated through visions and apparitions. The apparitions tell macbeth: “Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth, beware Macduff; / Beware the Thane of Fife.
Macbeth decides he needs to take action to keep his crown, “Given to the common enemy of man/ to make them kings, the seeds of Banquo kings/ Rather than so, come Fate into the list” (3. 1. 70-72). After seeing that all of his prophecies come true Macbeth thinks about Banquo and fears losing his crown. Macbeth hires murderers to go and kill Banquo and Fleance so that he remains king.
When the Witches' prophecy states Banquoes son will become king one day, Macbeth quickly acts and remarks, "I am settled, and bend up / Each corporal agent to this terrible feat" (3.1.92-93). Macbeth decides to have Banquo and his son Fleance killed, despite his initial reluctance to harm his friend. Macbeth's determination remains evident in his language as he declares his resolve to carry out the "terrible feat," and in his interactions with the murderers he hires. Clearly, Macbeth's determination to maintain his hold on power overrides his moral qualms and personal relationships. Macbeth's actions as a King seem to only promote and help himself which becomes known when he states, "I'll make assurance double sure, / And take a bond of fate: thou shalt not live; / That I may tell pale-hearted fear it lies, / And sleep in spite of thunder" (3.4.90-93).
Macbeth decides that he now needs to eliminate Macduff and his potential danger to
In what ways does Macbeth attempt to control the future and bury the past? In the play Macbeth, written by Shakespeare, Macbeth is talked to by three witches. The witches tell Macbeth that if he does certain things he will become king. Mabeth and the other general, Banquo, come across these three witches, they tell the generals that Macbeth will become thane of cowdor, king of scotland, and banquos’ descendants will become kings.
He would even try and even succeed in committing murders. Therefore I can assume that Macbeth attempts to control the future and bury the past by listening to and being influenced by his wife, lying to others, and committing murders. After Macbeth speaks to Lady Macbeth, she tries to convince Macbeth to kill Duncan and even becomes enraged when he does not want to. Lady Macbeth even influenced Macbeth to lie at the dinner. We can tell that Lady Macbeth only wants to keep committing these acts of violence so that she can live a life of luxury.
The Tragedy of Macbeth is a well known story that revolves around the word “ambition” but this ambition isn’t always self driven by someone, but rather through the influence of someone else who maintains control of the situation. The story is about a man whose desire to be the king and have power leads to the murders of those who might stand in his way. Throughout the story we see many characters who play major parts in how one event follows another, and how some characters seem to completely have control of the events in the story. Although in Macbeth the Three Sisters and Macbeth exhibit some control over the events, Lady Macbeth has the most responsibility.
As individuals, we have a certain degree of control over our own lives and the decisions we make. While external factors such as social pressure, cultural norms, and personal circumstances can influence us, ultimately, we have agency in choosing how we respond to those factors. This is portrayed through William Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth, the titular character Macbeth is the protagonist, a Scottish general who receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become king. Consumed by ambition and spurred on by his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. However, his guilt and paranoia lead him to commit more murders in order to maintain his power, and he becomes increasingly tyrannical as his
What if you had the chance to go back in history and change the outcome of a major event? Would you? If you did what does that say about your attitude towrades the past and the future? In William Shakespeare's play Macbeth, Macbeth is driven by his ambition to become king and the prophecy that he will do so. If Macbeth could have turned back time, it is likely that he would have done things differently.
Unlike with the murder of Duncan, Macbeth lacks hesitation and says, "To act in safety. There is none but he Whose being I do fear; and under him My genius is rebuked, as it is said Mark Antony's was by Caesar" (3.1 85). Banquo's concern that the Three Witches' prophecy will come true causes him to question whether or not Macbeth murdered King Duncan. Due to Banquo's rising suspicions, Macbeth fears him above all others. Therefore, Macbeth hired assassins to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance.
This demonstrates that rather let Banquo be king, he is going to challenge and fight him for his crown. Banquo is the only person that knows about the prophecy and he is also suspicious of Macbeth killing Duncan. Instead of letting Banquo's’ son receiving the crown easily, Macbeth is going to challenge him for the crown. In order that Macbeth can be king, he has to kill Banquo and his son, so they don’t take crown from
If Macbeth had not have his own free will, they wouldn’t have all of these trouble. “Hell is murky!-Fie, my lord, fie! A soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?-Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him” (5.1.30-34). Murder of Macduff’s family and Banquo has weigh heavily on lady Macbeth mind and become mentally ill and no doctor can cure her.
Macbeth brutally attempts to control the future and bury the past by assassinating king Duncan, visits the witches, and kills Banquo. One way Macbeth controls the future is by listening to Lady Macbeth about murdering king
In ‘Macbeth’ it states this, “Only for them, and mine eternally jewel given to make the common enemy of man, to make them kings, the seed of Banquo's kings”(Shakespeare, 45). After all the effort Macbeth did, he decided to do more. He remained power-hungry til the end, he killed his friend someone who trusted him, it was a choice he made, and he even attempted to kill a child. More evidence says this, “The castle of Macduff I will surprise, Seize upon Fife; give to the edge of the sword His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in line”(Shakespeare, 64). Macbeth wanted to hurt Macduff, but he decided to not kill Macduff, but instead his entire family, Macbeth did everything to stay king, killing people who trusted him, and killing children, he made his own decision.
