The author uses ethos and pathos by asking authority figures questions to make the audience trust the article more, while also appealing to their emotions by making the future seem either exciting or fearful. Ethos is used when Mr. Blitz quotes Lee Rainie, who is the director of internet and tech Research at Pew Research Center, “‘In their responses], they talked about what the definition of a human being, literally, will be once this technology is available for our bodies and brains’” (Blitz). By stating that Lee Rainie is a director, the author builds trust with the audience, and uses this to present his ideas; about the future of the internet. Pathos is also used multiple times by playing into the fact that the future is unknown, “‘Human nature is what it is ... these technologies can be used for bettering the human condition ... but there’s a lot of evidence that humans will want to use these tools to do the things that humans have always done to each other when they don’t like each other’” (Blitz). Not only does it play into the emotions of the audience, but it also uses ethos because Mr. Blitz is quoting Rainie in this section. This causes the audience to not only feel wary about the future, but also trust that feeling because it is coming from an authority

The question "Is Google Making Us Stupid" is posed by Nicholas Carr to determine whether our use of the internet has an impact on how our brains process written material. In order to connect with his audience, Carr employs ethos as a rhetorical strategy. He argues through the concept of ethos that the internet has produced a society where people are more concerned with getting quick information than setting aside time to read and relize an article.
Pathos is implemented in the essay when the author talks about gay marriage, tapping into the audience’s values and beliefs along with emotions. He also plays with emotions talking about the injustices in society and fighting corporate America, giving readers a sense of patriotism. Graham redefines terms in the text that make his bias seem more reliable, along with using loaded language to give additional sentiment. Throughout the history, great changes have been taken place in our society. There is no doubt that progress of technology and science makes a huge contribution to our society. However, everything has its advantage and disadvantage, just like a coin has two sides. While science and technology advance human progress, but it also brings a lot of negative effects. In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, author Nicholas Carr states how the internet changes us in so many ways.
Pathos, on the other hand, refers to the use of emotion in a text. This type of analysis focuses on how the author evokes emotions and feelings in the audience to persuade them or to elicit a response. A pathos analysis involves identifying the emotional appeals and devices used by the author, such as anecdotes, metaphors, and vivid imagery, and assessing their effectiveness in eliciting a particular emotional response from the audience. Pathos analysis is particularly useful for assessing the effectiveness of texts that seek to inspire or motivate, such as speeches, advertisements, and political campaigns. Ethos refers to the credibility and trustworthiness of the author or speaker.
Ethos is a method of writing that appeals to the reader’s ethics. Ethos can also show if a type of writing is credible or not. Kairos is another type of writing that is commonly associated with logos, pathos, and ethos but it is far less common than the three. It creates a decisive moment in one’s writing, and although the author did not use it in his writing, it is still a very important writing method. The author is going to use pathos, logos, and ethos to try to convince his readers that his article is very effective in persuading people to believe what he wants them to believe.
He also stated that, “The last few years show a marked tendency toward increasing ruthlessness,” which allows readers to see that he has been studying the trends of weapons that were being used by the militaries, including the new idea of atomic bombs. Ethos refers to the author’s credibility and authority on the subject matter as perceived by the audience (Williams, 2012). Gladwell is a staff writer for The New Yorker as well as a bestselling author that doubles as a public speaker (Donadio, 2006); and his experience shows in his writing. Gladwell uses many learned and reliable sources to support his claims that each provide striking foolproof evidence . The author establishes a strong backbone to his argument by making sure he covers all the basics and never leaves anything to chance. Anything Gladwell does

Ethos, logos, and pathos are forms of the rhetorical choices the author used to further convey her argument to her audience. Her use of ethos is noted in the beginning of the nonfiction piece, where she discusses her career as an author and newspaper writer; she lists her credentials and gives the readers information about her life. Each of the footnotes Ehrenreich inscribed at the bottoms of pages in the book serves as a use of logos; they are statistics and historical records providing data about companies, labor laws, and other information pertinent to previous passages. Pathos involves the author appeals to the audience’s emotions, and Ehrenreich achieves this when describing her co-worker's lives. They have limited time with family and friends due to being occupied full time by their
So the usage of ethos and logos are present in this essay. The author uses an excellent job to cite his sources as well. The technique that author uses that to write this essay is that he started the essay with how people were close minded before and how then show how the internet had made it so much easier to become
Carr believes that we depend on the Internet more than just looking up the answers in the book ourselves. He is trying to prove that our generation is consumed by the Internet. He gives many details and examples to backup and support his argument. Nicholas Carr gives himself credibility by stating that he knows what’s going on in his own mind, this is where he is uses ethos.
