The Crusades are several wars that went on between the Muslims and the Christians They fought for Jerusalem. Most of the wars took place in Jerusalem. Were the results of the Crusades more positive of negative? I think the results were more negative. One reason being the people that the Christians hired turned their backs on them. The Crusaders didn't always attack the Muslim Empires. Sometimes they attacked each other. Document 1 states that, “In Europe, Crusaders sometimes turned their fury against Jews, massacring entire communities.” This is relevant because the Crusaders were supposed to be fighting the Muslims to get land, but instead they decided to attack the Jews and destroy their communities. Document 4 states that “The Crusaders
The same man while the others were otherwise busy rushed up once more on me and turned my face Eastward saying “This is the way you should pray!” This is interesting because a Frank is not from the Muslim religion so it is strange for one to come up to a Muslim and tell him how he should pray especially when telling him he was so forceful and overbearing even though the man was welcome to pray in the temple and in Jerusalem. This shows that the crusaders had a hatred and a strong disliking towards anyone who didn 't share their religion or fought alongside
Pope Urban II called upon all Christians into this war, calling those who don’t believe in God Heathens and providing reason to take control of Jerusalem again. Also assuring that the soldiers of this war will get an admission into Heaven. (Document 1) Christians, no matter the empire or region were being united by the Crusades through their love of Christ. (Document 2) French and German crusaders invaded a Jewish City, killing people for sanctification of the Lord. (Document 5)
The crusades were a series of eight holy wars fought by the Christian crusaders and the Muslim Turks. They began as a way to gain control of the sacred places that were important to each religious group, most notably the Holy City of Jerusalem. The Third Crusade was a three year long war between the Christians and Muslims under very prominent rulers like Richard the Lionheart and Saladin. It was arguably one of the more successful crusades, even though the main goal was not achieved. Even though the Holy City of Jerusalem was not taken back from the Muslims, the Third Crusade was successful to an extent because of the battles won, the strong leaders involved, and the outcomes of the various treaties as signed by the Christians and Muslim leaders
The Turks kept all Jewish and Christian pilgrims from entering the city. The Emperor of the Byzantine Empire did not take this lightly and ordered the Crusade. It wasn't easy, but the Crusaders were successful in capturing the Holy Land. They then slaughtered tens of thousands of its inhabitants. These crusades continued for about two hundred years, leaving many innocent lives lost to the sword of those wearing the cross.
Introduction: Provide background information on the Crusades, restate the DBQ question, state thesis with reasons. (include academic vocabulary and underline) The results of the Crusades was probably more negative than positive. In “Doc 4”, It states that “Moreover, the assault of one Christian people on another, when one of the goals of the Fourth Crusade was reunion of Greek and Latin churches, made the split between the Greek and Latin churches permanent.” The Crusades had a lot of hatred to the religions, and by 1204 the Crusaders had lost some of their appeal because the knights agreed to attack the Byzantine Capital instead.
This contributed to the shame of the event. Many inspired Christians “often pursued violence against other non-Christians”, they were brutal and left many for dead (Document #2, “The Crusades Assignment”). Crusaders were merciless and it was just shameful that they treated other religions this way. Along with violence their emotions they felt towards their actions were shameful. After reaching their goal, Jerusalem, they were filled with “mad with joy” and after killing many Muslims and Jews to get their they were also “full of happiness and weeping with joy” (Document #3, “The Crusades Assignment”).
These are the first two negative explams on why the Crusades were so negative, and why you shouldn’t join them because all they cause is hatred, fighting, and killing people who don’t want to be apart of the Crusades or not even apart of any of it. Also they would kill people who weren’t apart of it just for fun.
The Crusades were a very successful failure. After the crusades there was a large gain of military knowledge. New inventions such as the crossbow, catapult, and gun powder were discovered. In addition, new strategies were developing such as the use of pigeons in battle and new siege tactics. After the crusades political power was changing.
The Crusaders learned that it will be dangerous to attack
Pope Urban II’s speech at Clermont in 1095 was a call to crusade given outdoors to the nobles, commoners and church leaders of the Western European Christians (the Franks). The people were moved by this speech and it changed history, launching the first crusade to capture Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks. After hearing Pope Urban II’s speech, thousands of Western European Christians were moved to embark on the dangerous journey and fight in the crusade. I believe the main reasons they were moved and persuaded to fight was; 1) they felt it was their Christian duty, 2) Pope Urban promised them absolution for their sins and 3) they felt compelled to defend Christianity, their holy land and the Eastern Christians.
This was accepted by two very strong leaders, King Louis VII of France and King Conrad III of Germany, therefore creating the 2nd Crusade. The crusade ranged all over, from Anatolia, Egypt, Levant, to the Iberian Peninsula. It was a surprisingly quick crusade which ended in 1149 with Muslims taking over the Holy Lands. This was the beginning of the fall of the Crusade States, the loss also left Jerusalem barely protected.
To what extent was the First Crusade a catalyst for future Crusades? Preparations for the First Crusade was initiated by Pope Urban II in 1095. He gave a rousing speech to the people of Clermont calling the Christian arms to aid the Byzantine Christians in retaking the “holy land”. The Holy land was an area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, it was the shared holy land of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The famous Siege of Jerusalem was next on the crusaders agenda however Baldwin of Boulogne had other ideas, he left the crusaders and made “a naked claim to the land along the route” (Gregory, 2010, p. 327)
Many things happened during the crusades. First crusaders left there families, the women and children where left to fend for themselves. In the first and only successful crusade the crusaders killed all Muslim inhabitants of Jerusalem. Although the crusaded was successful, within 46 years the land had to be fought for agin. All thought there was other crusades they still didn 't manage regain the holy land.
The Crusades were successful failures because they did not meet many of their goals, but left lasting effects. The Crusades was an attempt by the Roman Catholic Church to regain the Holy Lands from the Muslims. They believed they were fighting for god and all sins would be forgiven and defend the Byzantine Empire from the Turks. The first Crusade (1096 -1099) was successful for the Christians because they had a clear and organized religious based purpose. Crusaders the Christian armies were able to hold Jerusalem and in the process led to a massacre of Jews.
The Muslim people were the ones being attacked and had opposing viewpoints of what was going on. The views of the crusades were vastly different from two of the largest religious groups of their time, the Christians and the Muslims. The Christians looked at the crusade as their religious and personal mission and duty. After all, the Christians were the ones who were leading the crusades and they were the ones who were the biggest advocates of them.
