In the “Minister's Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hawthorne looks to convey the wrongs of the Puritan faith through a character in his story. Hawthorne effectively does this through his use of Mr. Hooper, a man who embodies all of the Puritan faith and a man who would be admired by many of his religion. Hawthorne uses both Mr. Hooper and the veil Hooper wears to portray and criticize the issues of sin and morality within the Puritan faith. Before diving in to all that Hawthorne exposes of the Puritan faith, historical context is vital to understanding Hawthorne’s purpose of writing his story. With this setting, Hawthorne uses a character as a pawn in order to express his ideal of what is wrong with the Puritan faith, this character being Mr. Hooper. Hawthorne implies, through his depiction of Hooper’s beliefs and actions, that all humans are sinful and how all try to hide their sinfulness from one another because of how afraid mankind is to be singled out as evil, and viewed upon negatively by God. Mr. Hooper, the minister of the town’s church, is a man who would have been an ideal Puritan in their own terms. He was “self disciplined” (Hawthorne 1), a man of God, and someone envied by all. But Mr. Hooper was his own faith’s worst nightmare, a man full of sin. Throughout the story, Mr. Hooper is covered by a black veil which masks his face. He continuously prevents anyone from seeing his face or persuading him to take it off. Through the use of the veil, Hawthorne paints a picture which shows how sin ruled over the Puritan communities and controlled each person among them. The veil itself becomes the center of attention for all members of Hooper’s Puritan congregation. The entire population of the town become scared of Hooper and believe that this man who was so high among their values, now has a horrid sinful past that he is trying to hide. His constant preachings of how people must deal with their sin, instill a fear in the people only caused by God before. Hooper ultimately takes his masked face to his deathbed. As the years go on and Hooper becomes more of a recluse among his community, his death finally approaches. After reading the Ministers Black Veil we cannot assume that Hooper, the main character, has committed a dark and secret sin. We are, however, free to assume that Hooper is wearing the veil for a reason, one that may be greater than himself. The veil is a symbol of many things, all revolving around public hypocrisy. The townspeople are quick to judge The Minister for wearing such a sinful crape but they themselves overlook their own sins amongst the chaos of speculating the different crimes he must of committed to be wearing the veil.

In Hawthorn’s short story of “The Minister’s Black Veil”, rumors surround Minister Hooper when the minister shows to church wearing a black veil, for unknown reasons, people start making up assumptions as to why he is wearing the veil to the point that he becomes an infamously famous outcast. The mystery behind the veil and what was beneath became the town’s “topic for discussion between acquaintances meeting in the streets, and good women gossiping at their windows” (Hawthorn 393). Everyone in the town of Milford found themselves question the mystery, always wondering and assuming what is hidden underneath or why Mr. Hooper is hiding behind the veil. These rumors continue to grow, and as he continues to wear the black veil the people start to question him, and their image of him starts to change. Not only were the townspeople’s thoughts on Mr. Hooper changed, but also his personal thoughts were affected to the point that “he never willingly passed before a mirror… least, in its peaceful bosom, he should be affrighted by himself” (Hawthorn 395).
Hooper negatively not only excluding him from events, but also talking about him with others as well as being afraid of him when they knew him for years. An example of the negative judgement being directed towards Mr. Hooper can be seen when Mr. Hooper’s parishioners “neglected to invite Mr. Hooper to his table” (Hawthorne 7). You can already see how Mr. Hoopers friends are excluding Mr. Hooper from events such as not inviting him to sit with them and eat. By Mr. Hoopers friends doing this, you can see how they have taken into consideration only the appearance of Mr. Hooper thinking he is hiding something dark and sinful, in which led them to excluding and being afraid of Mr. Hooper. Another example of appearance defining who you are can also be seen in the parable,“The black veil, though it covers only our pastor's face, throws its influence over his whole person, and makes him ghostlike from head to foot” (Hawthorne 7).
Hooper is sacrificing his life by ruining his reputation of his as a minister and as a person. People start to look at Mr. Hooper as a different and changed person; this is shown when the congregation says, “He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face” (Hawthorne 176). The congregation also mentions “ The black veil, though it covers only our pastor’s face, throws its whole person, and makes him ghost-like from head to foot” (Hawthorne 178). Mr. Hooper’s veil that he wore was seen as if it took over his whole demeanor and made him into a whole new person. Mr. Hooper’s finance, Elizabeth, knew that people would view him differently and that the veil was not a good look for his reputation.

Like many of Hawthorne's novels and stories the story is developed around a single around a single symbol; in this case, the black veil. Wakefield showed two different types of lifestyles: the responsibility to family and the want for freedom. Hawthorne presented the view of human nature in “The Minster’s Black Veil” with the minster spending years wearing the black cloth, without ever giving anyone a true inclination why. Reverend Hooper wearing the veil gives the impression that he could be hiding some sort of sin he committed. Hawthorne deliberately leaves this ambiguous, just like why Wakefield left and decided to come back, to mirror reality and the uncertainty of it. Both Poe and Hawthorne present characters who are complex and intricate.
Hooper wearing the veil this makes everyone consider him an outcast to society. Before the service and old woman said “I don’t like it” and she hobbled into the meeting-house”(Hawthorne 1). As a result of Hooper wearing the veil he makes this old lady avoid his service because she is scared of him. At the close of the service many people went straight home by themselves and the other huddled in small groups and ignored Mr. Hooper and instead talked about him. Nothing, not the pleas of the elders, nor the nudging of Elizabeth , nor his own loneliness can persuade Hooper to remove the piece of black crape that separates him so dramatically from society (Boone).
In the end, the preacher tried to unmask Mr. Hooper. At first, he thought that he agreed. He then reached up with both hands and held the veil. He told the people present that he would die with the mask on; just as they would.

In both Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “The Minister’s Black Veil” and the excerpt from “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards, the topic of sin is prevalent. Despite this commonality, Hawthorne and Edwards have different approaches towards this idea. The writing styles of both authors are reflective of the time periods in which they were born. Hawthorne was born in the early 19th century and much of his work was dedicated to displaying the issues of the Puritan values. In contrast, Edwards was born in the early 18th century and his work contained and supported many Puritan values.
Mr. Hooper was forcing all of the people to look deeper within themselves and try to understand the veils true meaning “Such was the effect of this simple piece of crape, that more than one woman of delicate nerves was forced to leave the meeting-house. Yet perhaps the pale-faced congregation was almost as fearful a sight to the minister, as his black veil to them.” (Hawthorne 707) In reality, the veil represents the secrets everyone is hiding within himself or herself. The theme of the veil is the conflict between the dark, hidden side of man.
