What are considered boring events seldom make the news, what people really want to hear is the latest scandal of those placed on a pedestal so high that the slightest mistake causes them to come tumbling down. In The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, that is exactly the situation at hand. Hester Prynne had an affair with local minister Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, and because of this affair Hester becomes pregnant with Dimmesdale’s child. Scandals are not only in works of fiction, there are many scandals in the world that are quite similar to Hester’s. One of these scandals being actress Ingrid Bergman’s affair with director Roberto Rossellini in 1950. Both scandals between Hester and Ingrid are almost exactly parallel with few differences when it comes to what they both did, what their consequences were, and how they were both punished.
Both the scandals that have been mentioned are tied to the sins of adultery. Hester and Ingrid both cheat on their husbands and become pregnant from their affairs. Hester Prynne lived in a Puritan community in Boston, Massachusetts during 1642 when she had her affair with Dimmesdale. Previously before coming to Boston, Hester was married, but her husband sent her ahead to live in Boston while he stayed behind to join her later on. Because of their affairs, both Hester and Ingrid’s lives were destroyed for seven years but eventually they rebuilt themselves. Ingrid’s life did not end as tragically as Hester’s story did, since she was able to marry the man she had an affair despite being divorced later.
