I think it was a bit strange that Léonce and the kids were gone for such a long time while Edna was messing around with Alcée and falling for Robert. That part could have been a bit more clear I think, but otherwise it has a good storyline. I like the statement that Edna made about giving anything to her children, even her life, but not herself. At first I did not get it and thought it to be strange, but the author explained the meaning very well by the end of the novel. This can relate to real life in the way of suicide. People do not like to deal with difficult or awkward situations or confront people directly, so they commit suicide. To me, that is just a way to escape a problem because you do not want to work through it. I will never understand why someone would want to kill themselves or how something could be that bad that that seems like the only option. It only hurts the people around you that have to go through the
She even committed suicide due to the fact of how badly she needed to free herself from the Creole lifestyle. Edna, a remarkable lady in a sense, rebelled against the norms of society to openly be herself. People like Edna, or people brave enough to take a chance to change societal norms, come rare to find, especially during the late 1800’s. Edna never agreed to anything she did not want, after the marriage to Leonce, and was quite straight-forward with her desires. Edna, ideally, is a great role model to look up to in today’s world for filling that brave, young woman role to not let society shape her, despite the few occurrences she had intimate moments with multiple men or her carelessness towards her children.
In "Anthem" by Ayn Rand, there's a big similarity between the society of The Brotherhood and the Declaration of Independence. In the Declaration of Independence it says that all men are created equal and in Anthem all men are really created equally. The men in Anthem are created so equally that they refer to themselves as "we" because, almost is as if they're an individual. Although the main purpose of the Declaration of Independence was the Americans separating from the British after realizing that the British country is small,we can see that some of the ideals in the Declaration of Independence are tantamount to those in Anthem. Anthem reveals that Equality isn't the same to the others in the story which makes him stand out in being the equal to all of them, which is quite ironic because his name is Equality.
However, when Edna comes into the picture, Robert seems to become attached to her. He had never caught feelings for any woman, until Edna. When he realizes how enthralled he has become, he panics. Robert fears the connection he feels with her, and leaves for Mexico to get away from Edna. This sends her into a crazy
After swimming successfully, she develops feelings for Robert. After this awakening, Edna starts to step back and rethink her entire life; her marriage, her role, and even herself. She realizes she feels sort of imprisoned in this life she has had for so long. Edna finally starts doing things for her, she is letting herself feel an attraction for another man even though she is married and she also gets into art and has everyone in the house model for her. Rather than doing things to get the house ready for her husband or spending time playing with her children, she is distracted by all her newly found
As summer comes to a close, Edna decides to move out of the family home. She sends her boys to stay with her mother-in-law. After visiting them, Edna “[breathes] a big, genuine sigh of relief” because she is once again without them (Choin 97). She enjoyed spending a short time with her children but forgets about them shortly after leaving. She finds it easier to be distant and detached rather than engaged with her boys.
Edna developed a yearning for the pursuit of passion and sensuality, two major qualities that were absent in her marriage and home. She became enchanted with the idea of passionate love. This is shown by her relationship with Robert and with Alcée. These relationships resulted in a sexual awakening in Edna’s life. Mademoiselle Reisz 's piano performances brought an emotional awakening in Edna and fed her need for some drama in her life.
There are those lucky people who don 't have to go through or think about this. People don 't understand a value of a life when someone takes there own life. There is 1 suicide to every 25 suicide attempts. That makes up 79% of all suicides.
The social roles Edna might have chosen to live by and sustain, implicitly revealing that her sense of the practical, available social identities is erroneously and therefore tragically limited. As Bartley reminds us, Leonce must finally acknowledge and even accommodate Edna 's departure from the house. It is true that he "speaks" her story by providing an excuse for Edna to their friends and family, but Leonce 's fictional explanation for her leaving is nonetheless a sign that he is willing to renegotiate the old (and more conventional) terms of their marriage, including how much responsibility over childcare and childrearing Leonce might be willing to take on himself. Should marriage prove impossible for Edna, she might develop the friendship she has started with Adele, and/or Madame Reisz. Together all three might approach other women in similar circumstances and join a women 's rights movement.
Edna tries to satisfy this desire by taking part in an adulterous affair with Alcee Arobin, a known playboy. However, this relationship doesn’t satisfy Edna’s wish for companionship as she uses Alcee only to satisfy her sexual desires. This all changes once Edna meets Robert Lebrun, who invokes a sense of excitement and love in Edna. Edna sees her relationship with Robert as her only chance to gain freedom from the confines of society; additionally Robert gives Edna the chance to have a fulfilling relationship as opposed to her loveless one with Leonce. Although the two are deeply in love with one another, Robert is unable to reciprocate Edna’s desires to be together.
People who committed suicide were in a state of immense despair; they could not see hope and find the courage to go on. They wanted to end their pain. At the same time, they might not realize that they were also being selfish.
In Kate Chopin’ s novel, The Awakening, there are three identities inside of the female leading role, Edna Pontellier, being a wife, mother and own self. Edna was born in 19th century at the Vitoria period, a patriarchy society, women have low freedom to achieve personal goal. She married with Léonce Pontellier, a wealthy man with Creole descent. After having a child, her life is still unchangeable and as bored as before. Until she encountered Robert Leburn, Mademoiselle Reisz, and Alcée Arobin, her value of self-cognition has changed.
“And to hide, even from herself as she would have hidden from another, the emotion which was troubling tearing her,” (Pg. 45) it becomes clear that Edna is experiencing an emotion that was never experienced and her sexual emotions stir within her, forcing a tear upon her cheek Through her experience with Robert, Edna learned to keep her emotional distance from men, in case she be hurt again. Another man comes into the life of Edna and completes the other half of her sexual awakening. Alcee Arobin notorious at being involved with many women, provides the catalytic path for
If he were to say, ‘Here, Robert, take her and be happy; she is yours,’ I should laugh at the both of you” (108). Throughout the story Edna’s feelings for Robert grow stronger and deeper, so that by the end of the novel she simply longs to be with him. Yet parallel to that growth Edna has discovered her self and developed her own identity. The idea of a transfer of ownership of her person from one man to another is abhorrent to her, so much so that it would cause her to abandon her dream of being with Robert. Though she wants that very much, she is unwilling to lose her own identity in the process as she did when she was with Mr. Pontellier.
Throughout the novel Edna imagined this perfect life with Robert filled with impetuous passion. Though Robert loved Edna, he decided to leave for Mexico to avoid a morally wrong relationship with her. Even after returning to Louisiana, Robert abandons Edna a second time only leaving a note stating “I love you. Good-by—because I love you” (Chopin 198). The reality of Edna’s relationship with Robert would never meet her expectations due to her legal connection to Leonce.
