Civil War and Sectionalism The Civil War united the nation and made some drastic changes but did not reduce sectional antagonism. By the end of the war, the United States was a stronger union. Some changes were made because of the war but sectional antagonism was not one of those changes made.

Due to the fact that these parts of the nation were so strongly divided, the country was drawn into sectionalism. When this happened, many Americans identified with their section, over their country. In addition, because of their differing views on slavery and what the nation’s future should be like, it was crucial that one region’s opponent not gain more supporting states, or that one region would surely lose every battle in Congress. So, when Missouri wanted to enter the union, there was much debate because it had applied as a slave state.

The Civil war did reduce the sectional antagonism in the Northern and Southern states. Lincoln was a major factor in the changing of this country, he fought for slavery but not necessarily for their freedom but because of the economy and how the enslaved worked in the South: the South were more agricultural based and the North were more industrial based. The Northern and Southern cultures were established. This sectionalism was the reason that ultimately led to the Civil War. However, this sectional antagonism faded away by the end of the 19th century and it “ultimately made the United States truly ‘one nation”.

The Manifest Destiny was a great time in history, it had socially impact, gained a lot of ground from the war with Mexico and economically impact too. The Manifest Destiny had a lot of background so some of it was that Manifest Destiny is the belief that Americans had the right,or even the duty, to expand westward across the North American continent from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. In order to accomplish this destiny, Americans did not flinch at atrocities such as provoking a war with Mexico or slaughtering Indians. This will show how the Manifest Destiny impacted America.

Manifest Destiny was a positive force in American History. Because of Manifest Destiny, American settlers were able to travel to the more Western parts of our country like Texas. A lot of events took place in Texas which also helped us build our country throughout history. One of the main reasons why Manifest destiny was very important to our American history is because of its political effect. When Americans started to travel Westward, they had come across Texas, which was near Mexico.

Sectionalism The definition of the word sectionalism is the restriction of interest to a narrow sphere. There were 3 main sections that practiced sectionalism in the 1800s. These sections were the North, the South, and the West. A few events that created sectional conflict were tariffs, slavery, representation, and states rights.

This increased population the west. Additionally, Technology was advancing too because more railroads were being built and being improved. More opportunities were given to Chinese immigrants, as they were given jobs in the railroad industry. Ultimately, the benefits of the Manifest Destiny outweighed the consequences. This is because the U.S had to grow in power and advance, without anything being in their way.

Manifest Destiny changed the United States socially, economically and politically. It was affected socially because it became more culturally diffused; it also affected relationship with the Native Americans due to the Americans belief that they were the better race and others were inferior to them. It was affected economically because there was more land to profit off of and politically it damaged the United States and Mexico’s foreign relations. Those who believed in the manifest destiny forcefully removed Native Americans from their lands in order for the United States to gain more land. Thesis Both Nationalism and Sectionalism developed concurrently during the Era of Good Feelings. The two main reasons why nationalism increased was because of Henry Clay’s American System and Monroe’s policy to increase nationalism. Clay’s AS created a better national infrastructure that tightened America together. Monroe’s policy was to promote national unity and America’s power, which strengthens nationalism.

Southern statesmen desired to hold the West and the South together as a single political party. The theory on which they based such hope was simple: they both produced raw materials and bought manufactured goods. The union of the two sections prior to further economic expansion seemed perfect. However, Northern statesmen were not blind to such interests and also recognized the importance of the formation of strong ties with the agrarian West and bringing their produce to the north. The development of canals and railways would cement this economic union, and the results were evident.

Nationalism is defined as a patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts. In the 1800s Nationalism had causes and great effects on europe and Latin America. One cause being the want to have a greater nation. An effect could be a song or a mural done in honor of the nationalism in these great countries. Nationalism caused populations throughout Europe to unite in order to overthrow existing power structures and develop new ones based on liberty and national identity, the causes, for a greater nation as a whole.
