What Are The Four Main Goals Of The Progressives

As the President of the United States in the early 1900s, Theodore Roosevelt did many things that showed his progressivism. One of the reasons that we can describe Theodore Roosevelt as being a progressive president is because of his focus to limit the power of big businesses by destroying trusts between large companies. Roosevelt believed that big business was something that needed to be regulated and believe that it was bad for the United States (Sicius 138). This was especially the case when companies began to form trusts with each other to monopolize certain industries. For example, J.P. Morgan was in the process of making a trust with other big businesses, such as the railroad industry, to drive out competition from the market.

In conclusion, the Progressive Era improved America in many ways. From lowering taxes and stopping criminal businesses and monopolies, every single Act passed by the presidents helped. Roosevelt’s, Taft’s, and Wilson’s legacy still lives on today in the form of banks, food regulations, and National Parks. Without the people’s freedom, the American Dream is not possible, as everyone deserves a chance at success.

During the Progressive Movement we had 3 presidents, Teddy Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. Each of these presidents had some very good reforms that have made this country be how it is today. All of these things that presidents have done tie in with a goal of the Progressive Movement, there were 4 goals. One- Social Welfare, Two- Economic Reform, Three- Moral Improvement, and Four- Fostering Efficiency. These goals were accomplished in many ways.

The “Progressive Movement was an early-20th century reform movement seeking to return control of the government to the people, to restore economic opportunity, and to correct injustices in American life.” (Danzer R54). The Progressive Era marked the end of the “Gilded Ages” and a start of a new era. The Progressive Era started in 1901 in the United States (Fagnilli 26). There were many major reforms in the Progressive Era that altered and advanced American society.

The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Progressives typically held that the irresponsible actions of the rich were corrupting both public and private life. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.

During his first term in office, he took on programs and policies to relieve the effects of the depression, collectively known as the New Deal. During this time, many social policies were passed to specifically aid the working class. Some of the acts Roosevelt implemented were the Glass-Steagall Act, the Federal Deposit Insurance, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Home Owners Loan Corporation, the Works Progress Administration, the National Labor Relation Board, and Social Security. All of these acts were put in place to aid the working class, and prevent the severity of future depressions. Both Progressive Era reformers and the federal government sought to bring about reform at the national level. Examples of such reforms they wanted to make include: trust-busting, consumer safety, restrictions on child labour, civil rights, and women’s suffrage. Overall, the Progressive Era reformers and the federal government were effective in their efforts from 1900 to 1920, however there were some limitations. During the Gilded Age, and prior, the quality of America was unsatisfactory.

2. Theodore Roosevelt was considered to be the “First Modern President because he had a strong- firm personality, and showed aggressive actions towards others. Roosevelt believed that the President had the right to use all power unless they were denied to him. Also, that he has a responsibility to the people, and so challenged himself to avoid notions of limited government and individualism; the government he controlled should maintain as an agent who should give the people what they want. Roosevelt’s presidency opened up creativity of progressive movement, lending the prestige of the White House to welfare legislation, government regulation, and the conservation movement.

Beginning with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s inauguration in 1933, the New Deal was passed in the context of reformism and rationalism as the United States proceeded through the Great Depression. The American people looked to the President to instill reform policies to help direct the country out of an economic depression, and thus often sought to abandon the society that existed before the Great Depression. Roosevelt instituted New Deal policies to attempt to combat this period of economic decline, many of which were successful and appealed to the American people’s desires. The main objective of progressives was to rid the government of corruption. Has there ever been a president as influential as Franklin Delano Roosevelt? Truly Roosevelt was a unique man that lead American through one of its hardest times. WWII threatened world peace and the Great Depression was actively wearing the U.S. away. Few other times in U.S history required someone of FDR's caliber to lead America through such a storm. Roosevelt was undoubtedly meant with much success and love.
