“The Loss of the Creature” is a strong essay written by Walker Percy who expresses his vision of the world by claiming how a prepackaged idea over something, can potentially create a different outlook of what the individual sees. This essay supports the idea that Percy presents with the “loss of sovereignty” and how we digressed as a changing economy. Percy presents many examples how one needs to be lost to encounter through different symbolic complexes. The two experience a remarkable social event, yet are unsatisfied with its beauty until they hear it from an expert – “they need an ethnologist to affirm that their experience was without a doubt exceptional” (289-299). Percy then expands upon this idea into a more extensive issue regretting the layman’s reliance on the master and the customer’s willful loss of sovereignty. Percy constructs his claim with respect to an example made up by none other than himself, a procedure that gives his crowd motivation to address whether the example is excessively invented. He questions himself when he doubts the tourist couple, he states: “We wonder if there is something wrong in their dislike of their compatriots. Does access to the place require the exclusion of others” (299). This comment is adequately immaculate, yet applying Percy's next former articulation can cause dispute between individuals; Percy states, “If the place is seen by a million sightseers, a single sightseer does not receive value p but a millionth part of value P” (298). The message Stephen King is trying to convey with, “ My Creature from the Black Lagoon,” is that the effect of fantasy is based on the viewer. In the writing King talks about how children are more affected by horror movies and fantasy than adults, because they have a much more capable imagination. On the flip side of this coin King talks about how adults are affected by things like Disney movies. What you can interpret from this information is that life affects us in such a way that we are no longer capable of letting the movie trick us. The tone used in this writing is determined, as he is determined to let the movie trick him, as it did when he was young.
Many ideas about the requirements of personhood have been circulating throughout Earth’s history. Many relate to religion and spirituality, and many of the others either contribute to the people v. property debate of the abolition movement or the contemporary pro-life v. pro-choice debates. This paper will address a few of these proposed requirements and how they specifically relate to the Monster created by Victor Frankenstein in the popular novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley in a secular and non-endorsing manner. This character will then be juxtaposed with a character of a separate work: Lucky from Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.
The novel “Frankenstein,” by Mary Shelley tells the story of a man named Victor Frankenstein, who decides to go against the laws of nature by bringing to life a being constructed with decaying body parts. Victor believes in natural philosophy and science, which leads him to the idea of creating this Creature. Although this novel can be interpreted in many ways, I believe that Mary Shelley is shining a light on the harmful and dangerous impacts that prejudice and assumptions can have on people who are considered different. Shelley may be suggesting that humanity is the true 'monster ' due to its socialized ideologies that make ambition, self-greed and rage fulfilling. Even to this day society is known to shun those who we do not see as equals.

Fahrenheit 451 is a futuristic novel, telling the story of a time where books and independent thinking are outlawed. In a time so unenlightened, where those who want to better themselves by thinking, are outlawed and killed. Guy Montag is a senior firefighter who is much respected by his superiors and is in line for a promotion. He does not question what he does or why he does it until he meets Clarisse.
The moment Victor Frankenstein successfully infuses life into his creation he is overcome with horror and disgust. Without further examination he is certain to have created a monster, not a human being (Shelley 35-36). However, despite his grotesque appearance, Frankenstein’s creature was not born malicious. During the first stages of his existence, unbeknownst to Frankenstein himself, his acts are motivated by innocence and virtue, which even earns him the title “good spirit” (79). Frankenstein did not create a monster.

Someone who is hungry for power will never be satisfied and will desire for more until he or she gets what they want. In the novel by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, we are introduced to Victor Frankenstein a scientist that aspires to create a creature, which later he achieves. Throughout the novel, the theme is well developed and takes the reader through Victor and the creature's point of view showing the reader a clear picture of the dynamic between the two. The story shows the reader who constantly seeks power will cause destruction upon himself or others. Victor wants to discover more but is only doing the discoveries and achievements for the sake of fame.
Likewise, he demonstrates his discomfort about society’s acceptance of lobster’s pain and dismissal of their essence. However, in order to understand Wallace’s real intention in the essay, it is necessary to know his perspective towards modern society. By reading the Incarnation of Burned Children, it is possible to relate the society issues displayed, with considering the Lobster issues. The inability of lobsters, or the child, to communicate their pain of our careless acts is what disturbs Wallace. Therefore, he displays different examples to persuade the readers that society’s morality is corrupted and that the whole industry of boiling lobsters alive is accepted under a false premise that some animals are not deserving of protection, or are not ‘highly developed’ to feel pain.
Stereotyping in today’s society exists in many forms and is part of our daily lives no matter who we are. This is true even in literature and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein expertly shows the effects of stereotyping. In Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein’s creature experiences rejection due to society judging the creature based on his appearance. This leads to Victor’s creature separating himself from society to distance himself from abuse. This abuse is undeserved as the creature proves himself to be a capable and very intelligent contradicting the stereotypes made against him.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein presents important social criticism. Shelly focuses, in particular, on importance of forgiveness, betrayal, acceptance in society. Learning to forgive yourself and others is an important thing to know how to do or you’ll be holding on to useless hatred and pain all of your life; the same way the monster, Frankenstein, was doing. “Forgive me. Everywhere I go, they hate me”.
Sticks and strangling will break bones, but words will leave irreparable emotional scars. In Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s epistolary novel, Frankenstein, the estranged Victor Frankenstein deprives his re-animated ‘creature’ of a name. The cruel manner Victor treats his “Adam” (Shelley 119) by withholding a name pushes the Creature further away from the belonging he so desperately seeks (148). As atrocities occur at the ashen hands of the Creature, names like “monster”(118) and “wretched devil”(118) bombard him from those he would seek refuge with . Nameless, the Creature is dehumanized and consequences of a negative perception, internally and from society, persist.
When one rises, one must also fall. Humans are a power hungry species, always striving for control and dominance. However, that power is not always easily accessible, yet humans are determined to get access to that power no matter what or who has to be sacrificed. If one has that power, another is willing to commit anything to get a hold of that said power. In Section II of The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Kafka demonstrates how the shift in power from one person to another affects everyone’s social standing.
We often find that it is simpler to stay hidden in the dark, rather than step out into the light. As citizens it is our responsibility to call out our leaders if they are not taking notice of what we, the people, want or need. The animals, in Animal Farm, overthrew their farmer and attempted to form a fair government, but soon became dictated to, by the pigs. The book records the evolution of tyranny to totalitarianism which became as terrible as their first situation. In Animal Farm, George Orwell illustrates that it is the responsibility of the citizens to stand up against injustice and inequality.
