UNT’s opportunity to revolutionize school safety Proactive Defense a Proactive Response to Gun Violence at Universities One Murder at UNT is Too Much to Risk UNT Cannot Afford a Massacre: Proactive Deterrence is Essential Proactive Defense: deterring violence at UNT before it begins Preventing Fatalities and Injuries at UNT with Proactive and Reactive Strategies 2. School campus is a place for young minds to learn and grow in pursuit of a post-graduated life. Nothing is more exciting than the days leading up to graduation; to think, “I made it”. Years of pursuing passion and failing miserably, countless hours spent in a quiet library and thousands of dollars spent on coffee. All this hard work leads here to graduation, and they have earned it. These individuals put off desire and even life goals to achieve a brighter tomorrow, even if that means spending a Friday night at Willis Library or neglecting hobbies. They exert extreme care into their future with the assumption tomorrow has greater potential than today. “You can play now or play later” a phrase many undergrads are reminded constantly. Unfortunately, a growing concern inhabits the minds of college students, parents, and faculty after the Virginia Tech shooting. On April 16th, 2007 a senior at Virginia Tech fatally shot 32 people and 23 others wounded once the dust settled …show more content…
Often times a lone assailant carries out these attacks as opposed to other countries where terror groups often orchestrate these attacks to send a message to the world. It appears the shootings we are concerned with center around the attackers proving something to the victims themselves, rather than to the world. For example, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold targeted the “white hats” or jocks of the school, although it was apparent they had hatred for virtually all students due the pair’s indiscriminant
Tim Wise’s article contains a lot of emotion and it is though the clever tactic of appealing to Logos and Pathos that Wise makes the reader really consider what he is speaking about. There is even an ethos aspect to his argument. Since Wise is a white man shaming his own race, this removes bias which in turn gives him credibility. Now to examine the Logos aspect of his argument. By using the statistic “in past two years, thirty-two young men have either carried out a mass school shooting or attempted to do so, and of these thirty-two, thirty were white teens,” Wise is using the logos aspect of a claim to really make the reader consider the gravity of the situation and take into consideration his appeal to begin profiling these kids (69).
This paper will be discussing how the Vietnam war and Kent state shooting tie together and how it affected lives afterwards. The Kent State Shooting on May 4, 1970 was a culmination of the anti war movement because Four Kent state students were killed protesting the invasion of Cambodia during the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war was fought between North and South Vietnam. The United States, along with other countries such as the Philippines were on the side of South Vietnam.
After listening to a few of the oral history interviews and viewing photos from the events that occurred during the 1970 Kent State Shootings, I can’t begin to imagine the true effects of such an occurrence. During the past two decades, I’ve distantly witnessed, via multi-media, numerous acts of massacres on school campuses alone (elementary, high school and college) that resulted in lost lives and immense trauma for all involved. I’m sitting here trying to visualize what it may have been like for all the KS students, facility, and towns people, as well as, the members of the national guard during the weekend of May 1-4, 1970. A colleague of mine, Jane Grote describes it well as she was literally in the middle of it all.
Rahm Emanuel Fires Fall Guy in the Laquan McDonald Shooting The American people have expressed their outrage over the shooting of unarmed black teen Laquan McDonald by a white Chicago police officer. The outrage was not just that Officer Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times as the teen was calmly walking down the street, but that the police department and city officials tried to cover the incident up. There was a police car dash cam that caught the whole incident on film, but the recording was hidden away for over a year. The nearby Burger King had its footage erased by fellow officers.
In the article “Fueling a Contagion of Campus Bloodshed” by James Allen Fox, Fox argues that the response of both school administrators and the media can hurt more than help to prevent gun violence. Fox believes that the more we think and fear the more likely we make something happen. The media as described by Fox uses words that can be interpreted as an achievement or challenge to others wishing to do the same exact thing. Fox also explains how the school themselves are also at fault. Fox states that school administrators are putting much more focus on safety rather than education.
April 16, 2007, started as a normal day. Virginia Tech students rushed to their classrooms to avoid being late, but little did they know the tragedy that was going to take place that dreadful day. Shortly after 10:00am 32 students lives had been taken by one of their fellow classmates. After the shooter ruthlessly shot and killed each one, he took his own life. April 16 will forever be recognized as a day of mourning and remembrance, but also as a day where we come together as a nation and overcome the defying odds we were left with.

Deadliest shooting occurs at a gay night club in Orlando, critics say it is worse than 9/11. On the night of June 12, 2016, gunman Omar Mateen traveled to the Pulse gay night club with a pistol and assault rifle around 2 a.m. Sunday and started shooting. During the attack, Mateen calls 911 and begins to pledge his allegiance to ISIS. Many people would call this a hate crime but it is deeper and higher than a hate crime when you intentionally took not one person but dozens of lives. Rumor has it, that he had much more going on in life, but when he saw two men kissing it set it him off.

School Shootings: How We All Miss the Point... The aftermath of a school shooting is tragic, depressing, and causes hatred for the lives lost and the person who took them. Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. How We All Miss the Point on School Shootings, by Mark Manson, explains what and why these mass shootings happen. He starts by using examples of shootings and the murderer’s past.
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
Most of the suspects of mass shootings are young males who usually commit the crime on their own with careful planning of the event. Most perpetrators have a fascination with weapons and the shootings usually occur in broad daylight in public places (Frances). There is an obvious difference in the brain of mass shooters to those of non-mass shooters. Low orbital cortex activity may be the main difference between the two groups of people. About 1 in 100 people are psychopaths, there was a study that was done at UC Irvine by James Fallon where he used a PET scan to measure brain activity.
In order to nurture a healthy learning environment at America’s schools and universities, it is critical that students as well as faculty feel safe on campus. Recent pandemonium of violent crimes on campus has many pro-gun activists suggesting that both the Students and Teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on
