We find in many of the stories that the soldiers mentioned are haunted by the feelings of “guilt and shame”. These feeling seem to make them do irrational and crazy things. Upon his first initial visit to the dentist, he had fainted. To prove to himself and the other soldiers that he is a “real brave man”, he returned to the dentist in the middle of the night and demanded that the dentist remove a tooth, even though he had no problems with his teeth (62-64) Later a story is told of Norman Bowker who hung himself because he could not get over the same feeling of shame that he felt for not having

Veteran Benefits The issue of veteran benefits in the United States is not taken as seriously as it should be in our country, even though it is a growing problem that needs to be addressed. The lack of available funding for veterans is especially obvious when compared to that available for lower income citizens, or even illegal immigrants. Also, what does exist appears to fall short in taking care of veteran’s needs. Considering that these veterans are people who have risked their lives fighting for this country, the fact that they are not receiving immediate benefits or even what they have earned is unfair.

In 2012, a committee of private foundations was formed to analyze the government and finances of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program which is funded primarily by Medicare with support from the Department of Veteran Affairs and the Resource and Service Administration. GME was established in 1965 to provide continual funding for medical school residents who can provide medical care for Medicare beneficiaries. The committee tasked with the analysis of GME came up with a proposal to completely transform the current accreditation system by merging the two current GME MD and DO accreditations system into one competency based system called ACGME (Single GME).
