Valley Forge: Continental Army In The American Revolution

Imagine if your a slave about the age of seventeen and fighting in a war against a gigantic army. What if you were outside in the cold with no food or meat with everybody thinking your not a free slave. What if people were taken from you because of a diseases. “Forge” by, “Lauria Halse Anderson,” is during the Revolutionary War in Valley Forge it was 1775 through 1783 and this is also the time where slavery was around. In the book Forge pg 13-14 curzon the main character hides behind a log and sees a young boy the same age as he is.

Not Quitting on Valley Forge Valley Forge is a winter camp 18 miles from Philadelphia. At Valley Forge, many soldiers got sick due to lacking in supplies and food. Many soldiers started to quit, but I was one of many who decided to stay. One reason I have decided to stay is because of the estimate or death and illness’ to the people who stayed alive.(Doc. A)

In Document A, there was about 3,000 people sick throughout the encampment and 1,800 - 2,500 people dead. At first, there was about 12,000 people at the beginning of Valley Forge, 49% of those people were sick and half of those people ended up dead. Valley Forge, The Winter Camp of Death and Illness I would quit and leave Valley Forge. Valley Forge is a winter camp that soldiers had to stay at. I have many evidences that I would quit Valley Forge. One evidence that I would quit is from Doc A. It is the research estimate of illness and death at Valley Forge.

Also, if this many people died from illnesses than it is likely that I will die from the illness. In Document B it shows George Washington attempting to get us proper food, water, and resources we need to last the winter. This shows that the Congressional Congress will not support us throughout the winter. Even though George Washington stood up for us we still didn’t give us the resources we wanted.

Valley Forge is where George Washington came to a winter camp next to Pennsylvania and tried to help because of the harsh weather and poor amount of food, water, and clothing they were provided with. They thought they could make an army and be get strong to be powerful to be ready to fight the enemies. They call this Valley Forge. I would quit Valley Forge because research shows that about 50% of people died because of the harsh weather and the many illnesses that went around. In December to June 1,800 to 2,500 people died due to illness during the encampment.

In 1778 at Valley Forge you had a 15% chance of death and 50% chance of becoming ill, so what would you have done, quit or stay and fight for your country's independence as stated in Document A. Many people were leaving Valley Forge because they didn't like their chances of winning. Others thought differently and stayed to fight for their country's independence. Soldiers that stayed had patriotism and they were put through conditions that showed they wanted to have freedom. Not only were soldiers fighting for their own freedom but they were fighting to provide independence of their whole countrie and separation of Britain.

That means that over 4,000 soldiers either died or quit at Valley Forge. I wouldn 't want to stay there if that many people were dying and getting sick. During their encampment, through the months of December -June between 1800 to 2500 soldiers had died from an illness. If that

With all of these soul-shattering, life-changing conditions, it is less of a war and more of a test of strength for the soldiers, here at Valley Forge. Some men were going home and not returning. Other men just completely deserted. Even George Washington’s position was uncertain, the members of congress didn’t trust him. Life at Valley Forge was obviously horrible, and the ugly truth is that it wouldn’t get much better.

Valley Forge was a winter camp 18 miles away from Philadelphia, where George Washington took his troops during 1777 and 1778. The British army is comfortable in Philadelphia, while Valley Forge has harsh conditions with the cold weather and the lack of supplies. I will not reenlist when my 9-month enlistment is over. I will not reenlist for these reasons, diseases, lack supplies, and cold weather and smoky air.

Freedom and liberty were the reason for the American Revolution. There were different point of views on freedom and liberty, the Loyalists, the Patriots, and the slaves. The Loyalists, such as Elihu Lockton from the book Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, thought that more freedom wasn’t necessary and was overrated since the freedom the king was giving was good enough and were treating the Loyalists well. The Patriots thought that freedom away from the king was needed because the colonies/Americans were being mistreated and didn’t want to live under the rules that were unfair for them. However, the slaves had a completely different view of freedom.

In the winter, Washington took his troops to Valley Forge, which was 18 miles from Philadelphia. At this time, Valley Forge was a difficult place to live for the Patriots. It was a struggle but if I were a Patriot in Valley Forge fighting for Washington’s Army, I wouldn’t quit. I won’t quit for three big reasons; yes I know there were a lot of sick soldiers but not as much as dying soldiers, another thing is the conditions were horrible, but there were many brave soldiers who stuck with it, and stayed with Washington, lastly I do not want to be a “summer soldier” because freedom is valuable so it is worth fighting for.
