Use Of Irony In The Masque Of The Red Death

Death plays a bigger role in life than life itself. When people die, people cry, and while people cry, a clear moment of lucidity occurs. Death is what makes every moment worth living and is told through stories of books and movies with symbols both subtle and blunt. Night, for example, is an autobiographical novel recalling Eliezer’s experience through concentration camps while The Book Thief is a historical fiction film where Liesel is a bystander who participates in activities symbolizing war. History is intertwined death.

Do you think you can escape death? I believe that you cannot escape death. In the story “Masques of the Red Death” there are many symbols. The clock, the rooms, and the stranger are all symbols.

Symbolism is used to convey messages that are harder to show without saying it directly. In “The Tell Tale Heart,” The old old man’s “ eye’s is resembled of that of a vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it,”(74). The narrator had a fear of the eye and compared it to that of a vulture's: hideous, cold and always looking to snatch something from the ground. He is a psychopath and doesn't understand that the old man has a disease. The fear of the man's eye becomes and obsession and gets to the point til that's the only thing that he can think about.

The Masque of the Red Death has a lot of symbolism that has to do with the circle of life- such as the different colors of the seven rooms each meaning one stage of life. Through Poe’s use of literary devices, the reader can discover tone, theme, and mood. Throughout Poe’s life he experienced death with two of his mother’s and his young wife. Death is shown how inevitable it is with Poe’s writing and experiences combined together.

Despite the belief that one can live forever, death is certain. Edgar Allen Poe wrote his short story, “The Masque of the Red Death” with a greater meaning than simply the Red Death, or plague. He wrote this story, symbolizing the stages of life. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, Poe uses the symbols of the hallway, the rooms, and the braziers, to enhance the allegory, and to show how death is inevitable and one can not spend their life worrying about it.

The entire short story can be envisioned as a scary dream. Poe sets the tone of the story in the very beginning, stating, “The ‘Red Death’ had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal- the redness and the horror of blood,” (Poe 3). This sets an emphatically dark and horrific tone for the reader, which carries into the plot of the story.

Through personification the speaker depicts death as a gentlemen, and not someone who brutally takes our lives quickly, but in a courteous manner. The rats in the story is a symbol used to represent death, the indifference of humans, and humanity’s resilience. Death is commonplace in the story due to the pestilence in the town, the rats represent the suffering and mortality of the townsfolk.

In the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, many dramatic devices are used. Shakespeare was a well known english writer in the sixteenth century, however he wrote about the eleventh century. One of his most successful written tragedies was and still is his play Macbeth. This tragedy has been so successful because of the impact it has on the audience and readers. The use of dramatic devices allows people to feel more engaged and involved in the play.

Irony is used to demonstrates the views presented by Gabriel Marquez on the role of women. Gabriel provides the reader with his views on the role of women by demonstrating the irony of the role of virginity in valuing a woman; in this town and in Latin America virginity is the women honour.
