Urban Outfitters is an American multinational retail and lifestyle corporation. In the cutthroat world of retail stores, Urban Outfitters has proven to be a long-standing big name currently worth 1.25 billion USD. Urban Outfitters is successful because it updates its spatial design and layout to follow urban trends catering to customers in their late teens to twenties. This essay highlights Paco’s theories from Gladwell’s article through the ways Urban Outfitters uses a minimalist design, an ever-changing layout, a homelike atmosphere, and a pet-friendly strategy to contribute to the store’s success.

Their social media sites advertise that they adore pets, especially dogs. The store is set up in a way such that there is no merchandise displayed below eye level. Everything is displayed high enough for pets not to tamper with the products. There are also no sharp corners that could hurt pets. This pet-friendly set up is to accommodate their customers’ fondness of animals. Most of the customers who come in the store bring their pets with them. With younger generation these days, social consciousness is a substantial part of the urban lifestyle. For animal lovers, they are firm believers in animal rights. The customers’ belief against animal abuse is apparent when Urban Outfitters made a mistake in 2009. Urban Outfitters was selling apparel with real fur, and PETA asked them privately to stop doing so. When the company did not reply, PETA made this knowledge of animal cruelty public and asked the people to keep pressuring Urban Outfitters. At this point, Urban Outfitters had no choice but to do damage control. The company signed an agreement with PETA to go fur-free, and ever since then, they understood how important animals were to their customers. To translate their love of animals, Urban Outfitters carries various makeup and skincare lines that are vegan and healthy for the skin.
