Tom Chaney was a malevolent and temperamental man who murdered Mattie Ross's father over a gambling disagreement. The desire for destruction of Tom Chaney and to take justice to her own hands was an intention that remained engraved into Mattie Ross’s mind ever since she heard that Chaney had murdered her father. Justice was served in True Grit because Mattie was able to kill her father’s murderer, and along with the help of LaBeouf and Cogburn, Mattie as well got to kill many other criminals along the way through her journey. Not only did he kill, but Tom Chaney used a dead corpse as an excuse to steal from them. Tom Chaney imposed a great threat to the town of Yell County and was on the loose.

In Mattie’s world the meaning of true grit is to have a lot of courage. I feel everybody except Tom Chaney has some form of true grit. For example Rooster Cogburn showed true grit because he charged against seven armed riders with two pistols on a horse by himself. However Mama has true grit because she is battling death back at home. The reason Tom Chaney has no true grit is because he is a coward.

Grit is a term that gets thrown around alot; but rarely do people take time to think about what grit is and how it can help in everyday life. In Charlie Portis's True Grit, Rooster is portrayed as the grittiest character in the book for several reasons. Rooster Cogburn's fearlessness in the face of danger is a crucial element of his character in the novel "True Grit" by Charles Portis.
