Tom And Till Compare And Contrast

The three people I am writing about are James Craig Anderson, Johnny Lee Butts, & Emmett Till. James Craig Anderson was murdered in a hate crime. Johnny Lee Butts was killed in a hate crime also & was also ran over. Emmett Till was killed for flirting with a white woman. James Craig Anderson was a 49 year old African American who was murdered in a hate crime in Jackson Mississippi In 2011.

In the Story To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson, an African American is blamed and killed for something that was not his fault and had nothing to do with. But in the report of Emmett Till he was killed for something that he did do. So there are a couple of things that i can Compare and contrast about Tom Robinson and Emmett till and why they both suffered the same “consequences” Tom Robinson was accused of the rape and beating of Mayella ewell even though it was obvious That Bob Ewell was the one who beat her, And Emmett Till was killed because he he “Harassed” a white woman that was married because he’s friends told him to do it. Some of the things that we can contrast about them is that Tom Robinson was NOT the one who “Raped” and “Beat”

Yes it was 20 year different but the two case take place around the same time period. Comparing the two cases, you might find some similarities, such as how both Emmet and Tom was accused of romanticizing with a white woman. Both Tom and Emmet were killed due to being blame of romanticizing with a woman of another race. The amount of racial imbalance in the time periods of Tom Robinson and Emmet Till was a lot. This paper will show how brutally Emmett Till was murdered. It will also attempt to explain why he was murdered as well as the impact his death had on the civil rights movement. How that impact is overlooked when the civil rights movement is brought up? Another thing being discussed is the confession made by the murders in this inhuman crime. Also the way he behaved during his kidnapping and how differently he behaved before the kidnapping in his everyday life.

The murder is soon widespread throughout the town, “they had only to look at a white woman and be hanged for it. Emmett Till’s murder had proved it was a crime, punishable by death , for a Negro man to even whistle at a white woman in Mississippi” (Moody 139) The murder of Emmitt Till would be the beginning of Moody’s transformation into a civil rights activist because she is bothered by the idea of two grown men murdering a fourteen year old boy. Her reaction of this event shapes her way of thinking. The second major event would be the Woolworth Sit in.

Emmett Till was a loving, fun fourteen year old boy who grew up on the Southside of Chicago. During 1955, classrooms were segregated yet Till found a way to cope with the changes that was happening in the world. Looking forward to a visit with his cousins, Emmett was ecstatic and was not prepared for the level of segregation that would occur in Money, Mississippi when he arrived. Emmett was a big prankster, but his mother reminded him of his race and the differences that it caused. When Till arrived in Money, he joined in with his family and visited a local neighborhood store for a quick beverage.

The case is a typical case during these times in the south. A black man is wrongly accused. Tom is found guilty even though it is blatant that he is innocent. Throughout the story, the children’s loss of innocence is critically

Later, when Emmett Till died in the book, Guitar was very passionate on his death and he spoke of the injustice brought upon African Americans. Guitar believes that white people do not care about black lives, and as a result, he decides that he shouldn’t care about white lives. All evidence pointed to Mr. Ewell as the offender, a man who spends all his money on whiskey and lets his children cry from starvation. While, Tom Robinson is a good person, with a good job and a good family but with a bad, bad skin color. And that's the important factor. The judge, jury, both lawyers, practically the entire town knew that Tom was innocent.

Tom has some positive qualities and negative qualities. Tom doesn’t have a lot of positive qualities. Some of his positive qualities are  that he paints the fence for Aunt Polly, he is smart about how to do bad things.   In the book the author writing something about Tom helping paint the fence.
