Have you ever thought what would happen if one person started to believe in something that’s others didn’t. Then what if everybody else started to follow along. That reminds me of this game called Fortnite. One person started playing it then everybody followed along. This relates back to To Kill A Mockingbird by showing how racism has affected their town. One person shares his opinion about racism then everybody starts to agree with it. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper lee she shows that characters like Boo Radley, Dolphus Raymond and Tom Robinson are described as mockingbirds. This shows how they are all good people just judged by other people. In To kill A Mockingbird Dolphus Raymond is to be described as a mockingbird …show more content…
This quote takes place when Dolphus is explaining with people about how he doesn’t drink he just wants to be with the African American. “Some folks don’t - like the way I live” ( Lee 268). This reveals that Dolphus knows that people don’t like that he is a drunk but mainly that he’s always with the African American. The quote is describing that Dolphus understands that the other town people don’t like the way he drinks African Americans. Dolphus Raymond is described as a mocking bird because that he was known as a drunk in the town. He really just wanted to be with the African Americans and have people not judge him for it. Another example of Dolphus being a mocking bird is when Dill and Scout figure out that the bottle inside the paper sack was just filled with Coca Cola instead of the booze the rest of the town though was in there. …show more content…
This quote is when Mr Underwood is talking about Tom's death and how it’s like the senseless killing of a mockingbird. It relates back to a earlier quote in a book about how it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird. “He likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbird”. This reveals that more and more people are starting to understand that Tom actually never did anything that would really put him in the position he is in now. This also relates back to the mockingbird quote and how he is like a mocking bird and it was a senseless killing. One last example is when Atticus is talking to Jem about how Tom Robinson was going to be sent to jail no matter what would happen. "Tom Robinson's a colored man, Jem. No jury in this part of the world's going to say 'We think you're guilty, but not very' on a charge like that. It was either a straight acquittal or nothing." (Lee 219) This quote reminds me of another quote in the story “Tom Robinson was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell. This shows that no matter what would happen Tom was going to be sent to Jail because he is a African American in southern
The life lesson that Atticus teaches us is brought up in several different cases throughout the book. For example, when Atticus says “Seventeen bullet holes in him. They didn’t have to shoot him that much Cal.”(315) This example proves that Tom, much like other harmless creatures, had done nothing but help others and in the end they suffered for it.
To kill a mockingbird In life some people are misjudged and treated unfairly for many different reasons, your impressions on these people may change after time. This happens with some characters in the Harper Lee's to kill a Mockingbird, like Mrs. Dubose, Mr. Dolphus Raymond, Boo Radley and others. Mrs. Dubose shows how her personality changes and how brave she is dying clean of morphine and fighting so hard, the kids see this later on in the novel. Mr. Dolphus Raymond opens up to the kids and trusts them with his secret, he really is not a bad man he is just making sacrifices for his family and their situation. Boo Radley comes across as a bad person in Harper Lee's book, he gets into trouble a lot, the kids see on the night of the
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee teaches us about the town of Maycomb County in the late 1930s, where characters live in isolation and victimization. Through the perspective of a young Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, readers will experience prejudice Maycomb brings during times where people face judgement through age, gender, skin, and class. Different types of prejudice are present throughout the story and they all contribute to how events play out in the small town. Many of those in Maycomb face and express sexism, racial discrimination, and classism their whole lives. This disables the people who fall victim from living their life comfortably in peace.
He is getting accused of raping a white girl because he helped her do some housework. No one in Maycomb completely understands the stuff Tom is going through. So that's why I think that this quote completely applies to Tom Robinson seeing as no one goes through what he goes through. The meaning of the quote is saying that you really can never fully understand what someone
To Kill A Mockingbird In the novel, “ To Kill A Mockingbird” the author Harper Lee uses conflict to express the idea that it takes courage to stand up for injustice just because of racism. “Tom was dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.” What this quote is basically is trying to say that Tom Robinson is being accused of something he did not do. "Yeah suh i felt right sorry for her she seemed to try more’n the rest em.
This quote is a perfect example of Tom Robinson, a black man who the people of Maycomb inappropriately label as a criminal and therefore act prejudiced against. Tom can be likened to a mockingbird in the sense that he too is innocent. Furthermore, it is a criminal offense to kill a mockingbird because everyone knows they are harmless creatures that do no wrong. Unfortunately for Tom, this precedent does not apply to black men in Maycomb even once they are proven innocent. This is seen during Tom Robinson’s trial just before Judge Taylor announces if he is guilty of asssuluting and raping Mayella Ewell.
Although all the evidence pointed to Tom Robinson being innocent and the only witnesses were from unreliable and changing sources he was still convicted. This is a depiction of the death of a Mockingbird, ultimately destroying innocence and purity that resided with Tom Robinson that died when he was shot as he tried to flee from his inescapable doom. Mr. Underwood, the publisher of Maycomb 's newspaper as well as a respected all of Atticus, sadly compares Tom 's death to “the senseless slaughter of songbirds...” (pg.244) stating another reference to the ever-present mockingbird
"Secretly, Miss Finch, I 'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that 's the way I want to live." (Lee 200 par. 11 ) This quote shows that Dolphus thinks that he need to pretend he is a drunk to explain to the rest of the town that that drinking is the reason he is white and he married a black woman and they have kids together. That is just sad that society wouldn’t just accept his decisions of marrying a black woman. During this time period, it was a sin for blacks and whites to have kids together.
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee demonstrates that the world is surrounded with good and evil. Scout, Jem and Dill all start innocent, but when they become aware of the evil from the adult world, it forces them to mature quickly. It makes them realize the truth about life, being that there's good, but also evil. Harper Lee uses prejudices in To Kill A Mockingbird to show the evil in life. She shows this through women not being allowed to take part of the jury, people being judged on their social class or their different lifestyle but the most prominent is racism since the jury convicts Tom for a crime he didn't commit just because he was black.
“Heroes are made in the hour of defeat.” This quote, by the late Mahatma Gandhi, who was an Indian activist, perfectly encapsulates the meaning of a hero. A hero is someone who stands up for what he or she believes in, and confronts the evils that the person may face, no matter how big or small those evils may be. This is exhibited in both Harper Lee's Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird, and Markus Zusac's Hans Hubberman and Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief. Just like the quote eludes to, these characters stay resilient even when there seems to be no hope.
To Kill a Mockingbird is famous for its controversy. In fact, it has been banned from being read at many schools for its use of racial, sexual, and political content, all of these aiding the book’s “big ideas”. To Kill a Mockingbird has many themes. For example, one is about racial injustice. You would think a jury would establish their final decision based upon the facts, but in this book, the jury had already made up its mind once it heard that the case was a white man versus a black man.
Tom Robinson was killed not because he didn’t conform into his own race or society but because he paid the price of another person that didn’t conform which was Mayella Ewell. Atticus was intimidated for defending Tom Robinson because he was a black man which wasn’t accepted to do in the white community. When Calpurnia took the children to the first purchase church she wasn’t conforming because of the fact she didn’t follow the way of coloured society. “Let's go home, Cal, they don't want us here". This quotes states the controversy between the coloured and white.
Raymond. He is a mockingbird because he's willing to lie to protect his family. When scout asked why he lied about being a drunk and he says “It ain't honest but it's mighty helpful to folks. Secretly, Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that's the way I want to live. ”(lee 200).
Harper Lee touches upon many social issues in To Kill a Mockingbird. Among these issues is the matter of racism in America during the 1930s. This novel focused on the issue of racism through the case of Tom Robinson which conveyed the strong hostility towards African-Americans in Maycomb, Alabama. Other various occasions in the novel exhibit racism’s potential and influence in this country including Aunt Alexandra's disapproval of Calpurnia, and Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s hidden life. Through the results of these instances, Harper Lee shed a new light on racism and how it will always persist in America.
In all adaptations, there are differences between a book and its movie, and in the movie version of To Kill a Mockingbird, which was directed by Robert Mulligan, many crucial scenes are left out. Jem, Scout, and Dill, a friend of theirs, meet a man named Dolphus Raymond outside of the courthouse. In Maycomb County, Dolphus was not considered a normal man, for he was a white man who had a black wife and mixed children. He even had to pretend to be drunk most of the time, just so people could have a reason for his actions. Dolphus told Dill, “Cry about the simple hell people give other people - without even thinking.
