The central idea of To Kill A Mockingbird is Bravery. A quote used in the story that Harper Lee uses to show this central idea is “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (30/34). This quote shows how some people can be brave. Many of the characters in the story were brave but the three i'm going to focus on are Atticus, Jem, and Arthur also known as “Boo”. Atticus, the father of Jem and Scout was very brave throughout the story. Atticus was chosen to fight on the behalf of a black man accused of rape. Back in the 1930s when this book takes place it was against the norm to fight on the behalf of a black man if you’re white. Atticus was chosen because they knew he would give Tom Robinson a fair trial. Due to this Atticus knew that people weren't going to like him. Atticus was bullied by Bob Ewell, who was the father of Mayella, the girl that accused tom of rape. A quote that Harper Lee used in the book that shows how Atticus is brave is “... every lawyer …show more content…
When Dill dares Jem to touch the Radleys door he does it. The Radleys are creepy people so to go and touch there door was brave. Also, another time Jem was brave was when he beat Mrs. Dubose flowers with a baton. As a punishment he had to read to her. Hes brave to go read to a person that he ruined her flowers and she's also addicted to morphine. The reading helps keep the morphine off her mind. She was dying you need to be a strong and brave person to be able to sit there and watch someone go through addiction withdrawal everyday. As Harper Lee says in the book “She was horrible. Her face was the color of a dirty pillowcase, and the corners of her mouth glistened with wet, which inched like a glacier down the deep grooves enclosing her chin ”(Lee 142). This shows how bad Mrs. Dubose was doing when Jem had to read to her. This is great bravery this can be a very scary situation to watch someone go
Atticus takes the case when no one else would since Tom is black and there is still prejudice in the book. When Atticus takes the case he is hated by many people since he is defending a black man, but Atticus doesn’t care he wants to win this case. To Kill a Mockingbird shows Racist themes throughout the book. To demonstrate, Jem and Scout were being reprimanded by Mrs. Dubose as they walked to the store, she told Scout that of she kept wearing overalls she’d have a bad life, she also said, “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers!” (Lee Unknown). This shows that some people in Maycomb are very racist. As another example, they use the phrase “Nigger Lover” (Lee 94-96) as an insult multiple times.
Importance of Details Kathreen Perez 1)Interesting Traxler, 3 Chapter 20 detail: -The whole county thinks that Mr. Raymond drinks whiskey, but he is actually drinking coca-cola in a bag. During the 1930's, racism raged through every corner of the United States, and the imaginary district of Maycomb County displayed the effects of injustice brought upon the African-American community during that time period.
Tom believed that he deserved to be free because and he didn’t deserve to be treated with such indecency. If he had gotten away and they captured him again, he would have gotten worse punishment because him escaping meant that he was guilty, in the white man's eye. Tom was a scapegoat because he was blamed for a crime that he didn’t commit which was beating and raping Mayella Ewell. It was actually Mayella’s father, Bob, that beat her up after he caught her trying to get intimate with Tom. Atticus is not only standing up for what he believes in when he takes Tom Robinson’s case, but he is also standing up for his family.
1. The boys decide to keep their witness of Dr. Robinson’s murder a blood oath secret. They are under the assumption that if they tell anybody and injun Joe escapes his hanging that Tom and Huck will be on his kill list. “S’pose something happns and Injun Joe didn’t hang? Why he’d kill is both”.

Harper Lee caused herd behavior in "To Kill a Mockingbird" when Atticus disrupted the ways of Maycomb by defending an African American. First, mob mentality, or herd behavior, refers to the tendancy of people to do over reactive things that they would not normally do with others. This tells us that people will act differently when they are part of a mob. When someone joins a mob, they can lose their individuality and adopt a mob mentality, such as killing a person. In chapter fifteen of "To Kill a Mockingbird", the mob outside the jailhouse were planning to kill Tom Robinson so their would be no trial.
In the argument between Mr.Gilmer and Atticus In to kill a mockingbird about Tom Robinson being found guilty for raping Mayella. There was impressive work of rhetorical analysis (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos). This argument takes place in a courthouse in Maycomb which if packed with the people of Maycomb. The argument between Atticus and Mr.Gilmer was about Tom Robinson to find out if he truly raped and abused Mayella. In the argument between them both used Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
Innocence is the state, quality, or fact of being innocent of crime or offense. In the town of Maycomb innocent people are wrongfully accused of things, one didn’t do, such as rapping someone. Or one having horrific rumors surrounding them. In the story “To Kill A Mockingbird” people are accused of things just because of how one looks, and the rumors surrounding them. In the story, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are shown as mockingbirds in different ways showing that people should not be as quick to judge.
This excerpt was taken from the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. In the excerpt taken from chapter ten, the character Scout, daughter of Atticus, views her father to be different from the stereotype fathers in that time era. The author, Harper Lee, displays the theme of social prejudice through the use of visual imagery, metaphor, and symbolism.
Another courageous act is when Atticus takes on the Tom Robinson case. He informs Jack that “The evidence boils down to you-did--I-didn’t. The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells’” (88). Knowing that he will lose this case, Atticus still gives it his all. Atticus is one of the bravest people in the small

Responses to Racism Many stories or novels have a conflict inside pages of the book; it’s necessary part of a book’s story to give the characters something to voice their opinion and their personality on. The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee also has conflicts. The main conflict is between the children and society's norms on racism, especially toward Tom Robinson, a african- american who is suspected of the rape of Mayella Ewell. Dill opposes against the town’s racism openly while in Tom’s trial.
Most of them, if not all, showed true courage by standing up for what they believe in and keeping their heads up high. Harper Lee uses many scenes and key characters to develop the theme of real courage for instance, Jem, Atticus, and Miss Maudie go through a journey to discover, understand and to show that real courage is mental courage in the face of physical and emotional torment. Particularly, Harper Lee uses Jem Atticus Finch to show that courage means pushing through even though you know have already lost. In Chapter 11, Jem and Scout had many encounters with Mrs. Dubose.
I believe people should always follow their dreams. After all, you just might come up with something new, like falling in love and such. See I found this dream to be with Scout and I intend to follow is one through ‘til the day I die. Heck, I would run away for her, and I did.
