In my opinion, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is not a good book for 10th graders to read. I will be supporting my opinion with three statements from a blog post that I had read. The First statement is about the writing style and language used in the book. My Second statement will be about how the book is more for adults and less for teenagers. My Third and final statement will be about racism. Overall I think This book is not to be taught in 10th igrade, because of the vocabulary, age, and racism. The Writing Style and language was not very good throughout the book. The words were inappropriate and often times it used slang words. I am a 10th grader and reading words that use shortcuts and abbreviations does not help me very much in
It has very complex and touchy subjects in the story for example the book talks about rape and racism. It's not always easy for teachers to talk about it in schools because of the language used in the text. For some students the words used and actions said in the book are hard to hear and can make them uncomfortable. The book also does not explain the n-word is a derogatory word. How black characters are shown in the book is hurtful to black students' image of themselves and they can feel if it's pointed towards them.
There were many passages and statements from the text that had great meaning and drew a large impact on both the novel and the reader, but there was one that stood out that would give the reader thoughts, answers, and had a great impact on the book throughout the whole story. In the text, Scout states that "Maycomb was an old town, but a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather streets turned to red slop... Somehow it was hotter then...
To Kill a Mockingbird shows Racist themes throughout the book. To demonstrate, Jem and Scout were being reprimanded by Mrs. Dubose as they walked to the store, she told Scout that of she kept wearing overalls she’d have a bad life, she also said, “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers!” (Lee Unknown). This shows that some people in Maycomb are very racist. As another example, they use the phrase “Nigger Lover” (Lee 94-96) as an insult multiple times.
As a child, have you ever wondered how it would feel to be able to fly like a bird? Many people do not know what a typical bird does during their day to day life. But a Mockingbird is not any typical type of bird. “Kill all the bluejays you want, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (117). The previous quote is a world widely known quote; stated by Atticus; a character from the book To Kill a Mockingbird; authored by Harper Lee.
“Nobody actually wants to grow up. We just want the freedom to use our youths. ”-Unknown. This quote represents Scouts character. How she wants to understand the world yet she doesn’t want to grow up.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus’s closing argument was unsuccessful. In Atticus’s closing argument, he makes it so the jury will assuredly understand. The Jurors are all white and from out of town so they are biased and don’t know the townspeople and how they behave. Atticus tries to connect with the Jury but he was ineffectual. Atticus’s closing argument was not effective because of cognitive bias and he couldn’t persuade his audience.
In the argument between Mr.Gilmer and Atticus In to kill a mockingbird about Tom Robinson being found guilty for raping Mayella. There was impressive work of rhetorical analysis (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos). This argument takes place in a courthouse in Maycomb which if packed with the people of Maycomb. The argument between Atticus and Mr.Gilmer was about Tom Robinson to find out if he truly raped and abused Mayella. In the argument between them both used Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
To Kill A Mockingbird Literary Analysis Throughout To Kill A MockingBird, by Harper Lee there are many acts of courage. This is shown in Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, and Boo Radley. Atticus shows the most courage in the book but all three of these characters show true courage in some way, shape, or form. Boo Radley showed a lot of courage, but he was not in the storyline as much as Atticus. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, courage is defined as standing up for people and doing what’s right.
In Chapter 12 of Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many events and situations in which irony is used to support the theme of the chapter. An example of this is in the very beginning of the chapter, when Scout is concerned about how distant and moody Jem is acting, and asks Atticus, “’Reckon he’s got a tapeworm?’” (Lee 153), to which Atticus replies no, and that Jem is growing. This is dramatic irony because the readers understand that Jem is acting oddly because he’s growing, but Scout doesn’t know this until she asks Atticus about it. This quote supports the theme of Chapter 12 by showing when Jem started to grow distance from Scout, getting aggravated with her and telling her to stop bothering him, and shows how the children
“Courage doesn 't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying ‘I’ll try again tomorrow’” - Mary Anne Radmacher. Through this quote one can see the advantages of real courage. One can really understand the true meaning of courage by reading the books To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. The book by Harper Lee is written by a 9 year old’s perspective named Scout.
Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. ”(Lee,page 103). In To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel by Harper Lee, the main focus on the book is to show various forms of discrimination, narrated by a young Scout Finch. The main point of the book is to portray what life was like in the 1930s for people of all social classes, and show how people were treated differently for things that were not under their control. To Kill a Mockingbird is about an unfair trial that occured in the 1930’s on a black man named Tom Robinson that was under the impression that he had raped a white girl, while it was all consensual, the trial occurred due to the stigma of a black man and a white woman in a relationship.
The Pulitzer Prize winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird has been placed among the list of "most frequently banned books” because the use of racial slurs and the telling of people getting rape with the use of profanty. In my opinion, the book is a very good book and it tells a very good storyline. Back Then that is what people did and talked like, you can’t change the past of what people did calling other people names and the racist comment people told one other. That was part of history when there were colored people and white people and the two groups did not get along.
In the passage Jem and Scout walk home during the dark hours, giving Bob Ewell an opportunity to stage an attack. As Bob Ewell attacks them Boo Radley rushes in to rescue Jem and Scout. After this Scout now understands what Atticus meant it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. The killing of a mockingbird is much like killing the innocent. It is beyond a crime and worse than the most heinous atrocities.
In a trial the closing argument is the most critical addresses made in court. Generally an emotional plea, this closing argument can be the deciding factor to a court case. To Kill a Mockingbird is a 1962 film based on the award-winning novel written by Harper Lee. During an era of racial inequality, lawyer, Atticus Finch, contravenes the unwritten social code to defend a black man against an underserved rape charge. In a racially charged atmosphere, “white trash” Mayella Ewell ignores the morality and conventions of the community, and makes a sexual advance on Tom Robinson.
Lee’s use of elements of style in To Kill a Mockingbird to convey and support the classic’s theme is what makes both the novel and the author so distinguishable. Using the literary devices of setting, symbolization, and characterization, Lee is consistently referencing the theme of racism and inequality in society. Throughout the first chapter of To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee frequently references age and appearance when discussing the town of Maycomb. ” Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it” (Lee 9). The deeper meaning that Lee is successfully conveying through this description of an old and tired town can be used to represent the old and outdated morals and view of Maycomb’s inhabitants.
