Mockingbirds
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, killing a mockingbird is considered committing a sin. Two men are considered metaphorical or figurative mockingbirds in the fact that they are considerate to others, but have something that puts them at a disadvantage to other people, these two men are Arthur, Boo, Radley and Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is at a bigger disadvantage because of how he was born, than what happened to him later in life. Tom has the disadvantage of being African American, in a racist town, and having a rubber like left hand, he was crippled on the left side. There are very few people in the world who could be considered mockingbirds. Mockingbirds are people who would protect someone, that they have grown to care about, no matter the risk to themselves. People who try harder, but still stop to help someone cross the street or carry something for them are people who are kind at heart but don’t have the overwhelming passion that a mockingbird has. Knowing one mockingbird, you would be considered lucky, but to know more than one would be a miracle because people just aren’t as kind as they used to be. When someone is trying to help other people, even if they are a mockingbird, they can be found doing something they shouldn’t; just because they are trying to help. They don’t often realize the full consequence of helping someone that needs help but has someone around that doesn’t provide that help.”Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. When Boo was younger a he had a sort of run-in with the law, which in the end made him have to stay at home and never leave because of what thought about him and his family. All he could do was stay in his house and watch the children play. This is how he watched the books two main characters grow up, he watch Jem and Scout Finch grow up without them even knowing. He felt like he needed to protect them, which is something he does over and over again. At first he does small things like fixing Jem’s shorts and putting little surprises in a hole of a tree trunk. To later, puting around Scout when there is a fire at Miss Maudie’s house. The best thing he does and what gets him the title of a mockingbird is when he saves the lives of both Jem and Scout. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the “mockingbird symbol” to help the reader understand the innocence of many characters in the story one example of a “Mockingbird” Is Arthur Radley. Arthur has never really done anything wrong to become hated as he is at the time all he wants is to have a connection with the outside world like he used to, people change from when they were when they were younger to where they are now. In the same fashion, another example of a mockingbird’s innocence is the black man Tom Robinson. Tom is an example of a mockingbird; he is an innocent man who supposedly did bad things with Mayella Ewell. Mayella Ewell is a mockingbird example, during the trial her father forces her to lie about what happened between Tom and herself but sincerely she has no resemblance of him.

All they do is sing songs and enjoy their time of bieng a bird. They don’t try to kill things, they don’t destroy gardens, they don’t do anything bad. And all they can do is be innocent so there is no reason why mockingbirds should be shot down and killed. “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (103) isn’t only referring to the Mocking bird itself but he was referring to other people in the story, for example Boo Radley was an innocent man but was injured by the monstrous evil around him.
Tom Robinson is a mockingbird in that he doesn't do one thing wrong. All he does is provide help to the people he interacts with. That is exactly how he got in trouble. Tom Robinson was helping Mayella with some chores. He was humming a melody and when he chopped up the dresser drawers.
He is accountable for creating many themes as well affecting the actions and development of other characters. Furthermore, he plays a major role in the maturation of Jem and Scout. Jem, Scout, and Dill are fascinated by the rumors of Boo Radley around them. People in Maycomb perceive Boo as someone who, “dined on raw squirrels and cats” and “the teeth he had were yellow and rotten”(16). This quote shows the people’s impression of Boo and how they affect the childrens in the book.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the term mockingbird symbolizes innocence in a person. In the novel it focuses on the fact that innocence, represented by the mockingbird, can be wrongfully harmed. There are two characters: Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley that are supposed to represent the mockingbird. In the novel, Tom Robinson is the best example of a mockingbird because he is prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. Also, he was judged unfairly based on the color of his skin in his trial.
In the passage Jem and Scout walk home during the dark hours,giving Bob Ewell an opportunity to stage an attack. As Bob Ewell attacks them Boo Radley rushes in to rescue Jem and Scout. After this Scout now understands what Atticus meant it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. The killing of a mockingbird is much like killing the innocent. It is beyond a crime and worse than the most heinous atrocities.
The mockingbird in To Kill A Mockingbird is symbolic of innocence. Early in the novel, Atticus, the father tells the children Scout and Jem that it is a "sin to kill a mockingbird". Later Scout asks Miss Maudie what he meant by that because she has never heard her father say anything was a sin. Miss Maudie explains his reasoning by saying that all mockingbirds do is provide beautiful music. They do not harm anyone, they don't bother anyone, and they "sing their hearts out for us."

Mockingbirds are an important symbol because they represent goodness and innocence. In this book, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are two innocent men, similar to mockingbirds, who get taken advantage of due to their innocence. Atticus and Miss Maudie teach Scout and Jem that it’s a sin to harm anything innocent by using the example of mockingbirds. Mockingbirds are innocent because they only positively affect people through their singing.
